Chen Rang didn't have the key to the cat shelter; the key was with Ni Youlin.

However, the cat shelter was hastily constructed, with a courtyard wall made of red bricks that was only a little over a meter high. The top was then covered with withered branches and twigs piled up along the path, barely serving the purpose of preventing outsiders from entering.

Getting in was easy for him; he only walked halfway around the courtyard wall before finding a gap where fallen branches had slumped over. Given his height, he didn't even need to use his feet; he easily vaulted over by pushing off with his hands.

The only annoying thing was that there was a pile of cat feces next to where I landed, which I had collected from the cat cage yesterday. I almost stepped into it.

Chen Rang, his face dark, could only shout that he was having a bad day.

He rubbed his feet on the weeds beside him to make sure they were clean before continuing to walk in.

As he approached the shed, the cats meowed joyfully upon seeing him. It was as if Chen Rang possessed an inexplicable charm; these little guys were not afraid at all, and even eagerly tried to stick their claws out through the cage holes, as if they could lure him over.

"Stop fooling around!"

Chen Rang snapped at him impatiently; he hadn't come here to play with these little guys.

He slowly began to inspect the various cat cages, focusing on checking the little guys' mental state and the amount of cat food and water remaining in the cages.

The food bowls for these little guys are filled at roughly the same time, so logically, their consumption should be roughly the same after a night. It's understandable that some cats eat and drink a little more, but if the food in one cage hasn't been touched much, then you need to be careful.

There were simply too many cats in the yard; he couldn't possibly, and didn't have the time, to patiently check them all one by one. So he needed to use a process of elimination to identify the cats with the highest risk and focus his inspection on them first.

Upon seeing this, Chen Rang's heart sank.

In the innermost corner of this shack, there was a cat cage, roughly one meter by one meter. Inside the cage lay six cats, none of them moving much. And the food bowl in the corner of the cage was almost untouched.

This is undoubtedly a very bad phenomenon.

It's understandable for one cat to not eat its food; it could be due to overeating during the day, sleeping soundly at night, or simply having a poor appetite. However, if an entire cage of cats refuses to eat, there's definitely a problem, and you should even consider the possibility of an infectious disease.

Chen Rang approached and saw that the six cats were all of the same breed, and even looked very similar, yet also quite abstract. This was the characteristic scraggly growth of kittens during their awkward stage, meaning they were no more than three months old.

In other words, this is a litter of kittens that were born not long ago and may not yet be able to support themselves.

Cats in this age group are also most susceptible to diseases.

Chen Rang's expression was rather unpleasant.

He didn't even check the six cats first. Instead, he observed the specific layout of the shed, the direction the wind usually blew, the distance between the neighboring cat cages and this cage, and so on. Soon, he had a bad feeling.

With this density of cats, they might end up being wiped out all at once.

He recalled observing the cats in the shed yesterday, and felt that the cats in that cage didn't seem particularly energetic. But he had too many things to do at the time; how could he have had time to observe them one by one?

And back then it was broad daylight, the weather was warm and unaffected by the temperature difference between day and night, so the cats would have looked better than in the morning or evening. But now, the morning dew has just fallen, and the chill of the night hasn't faded yet; that cold won't spare these unfortunate little guys. And when they're already sick, every time they're exposed to the night's chill, their condition will undoubtedly worsen. This is true for the vast majority of illnesses.

Chen Rang pulled out a pair of nitrile gloves from his back pocket, put them on, opened the cage door, and pulled out the outermost cat from among the several cats that were curled up together.

"Meow~"

The little creature struggled slightly, its stiff limbs making its resistance seem helpless and ridiculous. Even its cries were soft and delicate, yet the bristling fur all over its body made it appear as fierce as a pufferfish.

Chen Rang immediately noticed that the little guy's eyes were covered in eye discharge, and the tip of his nose was also covered in purulent secretions. The little guy struggled for only two seconds before losing strength, his breath becoming faint, and he couldn't muster any energy no matter what he did.

Chen Rang raised it a little higher to look at its rear end. Unsurprisingly, the base of its tail was covered in excrement, and a dried clump of feces had been pressed into its rear end.

Where it had been lifted, Chen Rang's eyes immediately fell upon the dried vomit and excrement scattered on the ground. On a small piece of undigested cat food stuck to its brother's back, faint traces of dark blood could still be seen…

His heart sank immediately.

Because these symptoms look very much like those of feline panleukopenia, including the fact that all the cats in this cage were infected, which also fits the characteristics of feline panleukopenia transmission.

And given the cattery's appalling living conditions, it's frankly not surprising that feline panleukopenia occurred. Furthermore, its neglected cleaning practices meant that infected feces and urine remained untreated, making the risk of transmission undeniably extremely high.

Given the lethality of feline panleukopenia, the virus's ability to survive, and its ability to incubate within a cat's body, when feline panleukopenia is discovered in a cattery, all the cats in that cattery are already under deadly threat.

This is different from when we brought the female silver shaded cat home from the cat cafe. At least back then, the female silver shaded cat was only suspected of having feline distemper, and it turned out to be a false alarm. But now…

Chen Rang looked around, his expression growing increasingly grim.

He was even glad that after returning home yesterday, he didn't go straight to the first floor, but went to the second floor to take a shower, change his clothes and shoes before interacting with DouDou and the others.

Otherwise, even if they have been vaccinated, if the virus were to be brought into the clinic and remain dormant, and one day an unvaccinated cat came for a checkup and accidentally contracted it, that would become the biggest disgrace of his career.

"When we get back, I'll disinfect all the clothes I'm wearing, including the ones I wore yesterday!"

With a muttered sound, Chen Rang quickly called Ni Youlin.

The feline distemper situation can't be delayed. With such a large cattery and so many cats, he can't handle it all by himself. Besides, Ni Youlin promised yesterday to take care of these cats, so it's only natural to ask her to come and help.

This unlucky girl never imagined that the job she took to earn a living would turn out to be an epic sinkhole.

"Hey! Chen Rang, what's up?"

Li Shiwei's voice came from the other end of the phone; her sleepy voice was soft and adorable.

"Why are you answering the phone?"

Chen Rang paused for a moment, then moved the phone away slightly to take a look. It was indeed Ni Youlin's number.

"What do you need Xiaolin for? She's sleeping next to me. We slept in the same bed last night; I only have one bed at home. Ugh... the charger's on my end, so I just picked it up. Wait, it's only a little past six! You rascal..."

As she spoke, Li Shiwei gradually came to her senses. She glanced at the time on her phone, and her first reaction was to lash out at Chen Rang.

Then, the next second, she looked puzzled. Why was Chen Rang calling Ni Youlin so early? Or rather, why was Chen Rang calling Ni Youlin? Didn't they say they had nothing to do with each other?

"Something happened to the cat shelter."

Chen Rang didn't want to think about the girl's seemingly rambling thoughts, so he quickly said, "I suspect that the cattery here has been infected with feline distemper. You should call Ni Youlin over to help me right away."

"A cattery? Feline distemper!"

Li Shiwei didn't react for a moment, but the next second she remembered what a cattery was, and when she heard about feline distemper, she exclaimed in surprise.

Actually, she wasn't entirely sure what feline panleukopenia was, but anything involving the word "panleukemia" was never something to be taken lightly. Throughout history, whether it was a human or an animal, getting infected with this disease has never been a good thing.

"What's wrong?"

Ni Youlin was woken up by Li Shiwei and opened her eyes groggily.

It was her first time sleeping with someone else, and she hadn't fully adjusted even after staying up half the night. Adding to this, Li Shiwei was a restless sleeper and had some sleep problems, so she was constantly disturbed until she was absolutely exhausted before finally managing to force herself to sleep for two or three hours.

"Get up quickly! Something happened at the cat shelter, Chen Rang wants us to go help!"

Li Shiwei rolled out of bed with a serious tone, demonstrating the swiftness and efficiency of a police officer. She didn't even bother to explain to Ni Youlin first; they could talk about it on the way.
