Alien creatures destroy homes? Start by killing upright apes!
Chapter 5 What are they doing?
Sam Eagle Kingdom, Waimeming Plain.
President Wood stood atop a makeshift steel watchtower, holding binoculars, his expression shifting from excitement to grim.
In the telescope's field of view, there was a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
A twelve-meter-tall Tyrannosaurus Rex stood on the plain on its two hind legs, its huge head swaying from side to side. Every time it opened its mouth, its teeth, capable of crushing anything, gleamed coldly in the sunlight.
Beneath its feet was a steam train that had been bitten in two.
"The third one," the Secretary of Defense said, his voice trembling as he stood behind Wood. "This is the third train it has torn to pieces. Mr. President, this Tyrannosaurus Rex has been moving along the railway line since it landed, biting any train it sees."
How many people were killed or injured?
"The people on the train were evacuated in time, and there were no deaths so far. But..." The Minister of Defense hesitated for a moment.
"A Tyrannosaurus Rex attacked a small town, crushing seventeen houses and eating twelve horses and eight cows. The residents escaped the disaster by hiding in the cellar in time."
Wood put down his binoculars, his lips pressed into a thin line.
"What about the other Tyrannosaurus Rex?"
"They are scattered across the plains of the Midwest, too numerous and too widely distributed, for our army to manage. The governors of three states have already sent telegrams requesting assistance."
Wood took a deep breath: "Can we kill him?"
"We tried it. The three Tyrannosaurus Rex were subjected to concentrated fire from heavy machine guns, and one of them was hit by more than two hundred bullets and did fall. But..." The Minister of Defense's voice lowered.
"The other two were only injured and escaped. Moreover, we found that their wounds were healing much faster than those of normal creatures."
Wood fell silent.
Below the watchtower, another steam train approached from afar, its whistle echoing across the plain.
The Tyrannosaurus Rex suddenly turned its head, its pair of yellow vertical pupils locking onto the train. Its two thick hind legs began to exert force, and each step made the earth tremble.
"Sound the horn! Make it change course!" Wood roared.
But it was too late.
The Tyrannosaurus Rex bit the locomotive and, like biting into a cookie, tore the entire locomotive off the train.
Black blood flowed from the corner of its mouth, dripping onto the rails and making a sizzling, corrosive sound.
Wood slammed his fist on the railing.
"Send me more heavy machine guns! Move all mobile troops to the plains!"
He gritted his teeth and added, "The United States never admits defeat."
But when he said those words, he wasn't so confident anymore.
……
Ivan Bear Kingdom, the Far Eastern wilderness.
Chairman Fra sat in a steam-powered snowmobile, his brow furrowed as he gazed at the group of upright apes at the edge of the distant birch forest.
The group of upright apes were picking up twigs.
They didn't just pick them up randomly; they carefully selected them. Each upright ape would pick up several branches and compare them, noting the length, thickness, and thinness, and finally keeping only the straightest and hardest one.
The others were casually thrown away by them.
"What are they doing?" Fra asked the scientist accompanying him.
"Comrade Chairman, it is not yet certain. But based on observations, Homo erectus is highly dependent on branches. The first thing each Homo erectus does after landing is to find a suitable branch, and then it almost never lets go of it."
Fula lit his pipe and exhaled a puff of smoke: "Continue to observe."
His gaze swept across the horizon.
On the vast Far Eastern wilderness, ten million upright apes are scattered among countless birch forests.
They do not attack humans, damage buildings, or attack livestock.
They just squatted there, clutching branches, watching everything with their clear black and white eyes.
It was eerily quiet.
"It's too quiet," Fula said suddenly.
"What?"
"They're too quiet," Fra repeated. "Is it normal for ten million wild animals to land in a completely unfamiliar environment without making a sound, without running around, or making any noise?"
The accompanying scientists were stunned.
Fula didn't say anything more, but just gripped the pipe in his hand tighter.
……
Great and powerful nation.
Kerry sat behind his desk, with three stacks of newspapers piled up in front of him.
Every newspaper's front page was filled with criticism of him.
"Water dragons ravage the farmland, while upright apes are as docile as dogs!"
The office door was pushed open, and the secretary walked in, her face grim.
Kerry didn't say anything, and picked up the top newspaper.
The front page featured a huge photograph—Prime Minister Massa of the Taro Tanuki Kingdom sat in the courtyard, with three upright apes crouching in front of him, the scene as harmonious as a Zen painting.
The caption below the photo reads: "Hippes: The most gentle alien visitors of this century."
Another newspaper's front-page photo showed ten million upright apes neatly crouching on the lawn in the Royal Park of New York, like a group of obedient schoolchildren.
Headline: "Zero Injuries! Oxford Showcases the Perfect Choice"
The photos in the third newspaper were even more infuriating.
Ivan Bear Country has started taking photos of upright apes wearing hats, with the caption: "Our most docile new friend."
And what about the newspapers of the powerful nation?
The front-page photo shows a large field that has been dug up in a mess, with dozens of water dragons rummaging around in the field, turning up all the crops.
The headline reads: "Water dragon ravages farmland in three provinces! This year's autumn harvest may be a total loss!"
Kerry put down the newspaper and closed his eyes.
He also questioned his decision.
That Lu Cheng, whom I've never even met, has made me give up the upright ape that all the powerful nations are vying for and choose this ugly thing that can dig the ground, based solely on a hastily written telegram.
The whole world is laughing at him now.
Was he right or wrong?
Kerry opened his eyes, took out Lu Cheng's telegram from the drawer, and read it again.
"Choose the Water Dragon Beast, absolutely do not choose the Upright Ape. I repeat, absolutely do not choose the Upright Ape, trust me. —Lu Cheng"
I believe you.
Kerry folded the telegram and put it back in the drawer.
"Tell the crowd outside." He stood up and straightened his collar.
"If the damage caused by the Water Dragon Beast is more severe than that of other countries in a month, I will resign voluntarily."
The secretary was stunned.
"But if something goes wrong with the upright apes before I resign—" Kerry's gaze was sharp as a knife, "I'll make everyone who has ever criticized me take back what they said today."
……
The Winners' Kingdom, the government.
Lu Cheng sat in his office, with a huge map of Earth spread out on the table in front of him.
The map was covered with small red and blue flags.
Red represents the distribution area of Homo erectus.
Blue represents the Water Dragon Beast.
Carrie pushed open the door and walked in, carrying a freshly brewed cup of coffee.
"Honey, the number of protesters in the square today is twice that of yesterday." She put the coffee on the table. "Someone has a banner that says, 'Lu Cheng is an undercover agent sent by the Water Dragon Beast.'"
