Chapter 59 People from the Star-Spangled Alliance War Department

Chapter 60: A Person from the Star-Spangled Alliance War Department Arrives (Seeking First Subscription!)

Chambers sat in the black Toyota sedan, looking out at the streets of Japan, where photos of the current Japanese Emperor Akihiro were displayed everywhere, along with war slogans.

The fervent slogans and photos of Emperor Akihiro flashed past the car window, but Chambers just watched expressionlessly.

He had no good feelings towards Fusang, and could even be said to have some disgust towards it. In his eyes, this so-called ally was nothing more than a mad dog temporarily chained up in the backyard of the Stars and Stripes Federation.

Moreover, this mad dog has its own thoughts and ambitions, and may turn around and bite its owner at any time.

The only reason it still wears a collar and wags its tail is because the oil pipeline is still controlled by the United States and the Stars and Stripes.

Some time ago, the United States made a decision that made the whole world smell the gunpowder: officially restoring the Department of Defense to its name from the war years ago, the Department of War.

In the history of the Stars and Stripes, this name has only been used during large-scale wars; in peacetime, the relatively mild term "Department of Defense" has always been used.

The shift from "national defense" to "war" reflects a fundamental change in national policy, which many saw as a harbinger of change.

It's no longer a matter of war possibly coming; war is already on the agenda, and all that's left is to choose the right time to press the start button.

Those who sensed the ominous signs began to take action, and Chambers was one of them; he was a new major general in the War Department.

He personally led his men to Japan this time, with the aim of teaching this mad dog a lesson before the war began, so that it would remember who its master was.

At the same time, let's see what results the research we had with Fusang has yielded. If there are any achievements, we'll bring them back for further, more in-depth research.

The car stopped in front of the Japanese government building, which was adorned with a huge red and white Japanese military flag. Two rows of armed soldiers stood beside it, and they immediately stood at attention and saluted when they saw the American flag on the car.

Chambers sneered inwardly. These Japanese people's awe of the Federation was always superficial. As long as they could maintain this superficial obedience, he didn't care what was hidden underneath. In any case, he had to keep everything under control.

Soon he met with high-ranking Japanese military officers in the conference hall of the government building.

The long conference table was filled with people dressed in Japanese military uniforms, whose ranks were high, indicated by the number of stars and sashes on their shoulder insignia.

Another was his old acquaintance, Hiroshi Takeda, a lieutenant general in the Japanese army who had studied at West Point Military Academy in the United States and Stripes for two years, and was in the same class as Chambers.

"Long time no see, Hiroshi the monkey." Chambers looked at Hiroshi Takeda in front of him with a contemptuous gaze, even though the person in front of him was a lieutenant general while he was only a major general.

Hiroshi Takeda's smile froze instantly. Back when he was studying at West Point, he was nicknamed "Monkey" by his fellow Stars and Stripes cadets because of his small stature.

This nickname followed him for two whole years and was the memory he least wanted to mention throughout his entire military career.

Unexpectedly, after so many years, he has become a lieutenant general, and the number of people in this country who can make him bow down can be counted on one hand. Yet, he still hears people calling him by this nickname in front of so many subordinates.

What angered him most was that the nickname "monkey" was first coined by Chambers, who was standing right in front of him.

But seeing the contemptuous smile on the other person's face, he dared not retaliate and even had to put on a smiling face again.

"Long time no see, Major General Chambers." He emphasized the word "Major General."

Chambers' face also stiffened; he recognized the two emphasized syllables.

His cold gaze lingered on Hiroshi Takeda's face for a few seconds, then he suddenly burst into laughter, a loud laugh.

The Japanese officers in the conference room exchanged bewildered glances, wondering why the Stars and Stripes major general was laughing.

"Hiroshi the monkey, you're still the same as before, only good at these childish tricks." Chambers casually pulled out a chair, sat down, crossed his legs, and showed no respect whatsoever to these high-ranking Japanese officers.

The Japanese officers in the meeting hall all looked extremely grim, but none of them dared to stand up and shout.

"How's your research on the spores we sent earlier going?" Chambers asked, his smile fading as he cut to the chase.

"Don't tell me you haven't made any research results in over two years. The Stars and Stripes Federation sends you so much oil every year, it's not for free."

Hiroshi Takeda's temples bulged with veins, but he maintained a smile as he sat down opposite Chambers and gestured to his adjutant to push a document to the center of the table.

Chambers picked up the document and flipped through it. The cover was printed with the words "Research on Biological Weaponization: Phase One Results Report," and the inside pages contained many color photos and charts.

But his brows furrowed more and more, and after flipping through a few pages, he actually threw the document on the ground.

"This is the result of your research?! Zombies? Do you think I haven't played that popular Resident Evil game?"

"Huh? You're trying to fool me with game data?! Do you believe I can cut off all your oil supplies with just one phone call right now?!" Chambers was genuinely angry.

Recently, the game called "Resident Evil" has become incredibly popular in the United States of America. His adjutant was caught playing it secretly in the office once, and he gave the adjutant a severe scolding on the spot. However, he secretly played it a few times himself afterward.

The game is indeed a good game, but the revenue from it does not go to the War Department, and this game has also caused a decline in the revenue of the Stars and Stripes special edition of Battlefield Vanguard, one of the War Department's sources of funding.

It affected the War Department's coffers, so he had no liking for the game.

There are even generals in the War Department who want to hold a meeting to ban the game and then create a local version like Battlefield Vanguard.

Now someone is actually trying to fool him with pictures of monsters from the game, which makes him feel like he's being treated like a fool.

"Major General Chambers, please calm down." Hiroshi Takeda suppressed his anger, bent down to pick up the scattered documents one by one, brushed off the dust with his fingers, and rearranged them, placing them back on the table.

"This is indeed our research result. We have recreated that kind of zombie, and spores have a very strong ability to spread. If we continue our research, I may be able to recreate the Raccoon City scene from Resident Evil."

Upon hearing this, Chambers' anger gradually subsided.

He picked up the document again and looked at it, but after a long while he put it down again.

Do you have any finished products?

"Of course, please come with us." Hiroshi Takeda stood up and gestured for them to follow.

Chambers straightened his uniform collar and followed him out of the conference hall.

The group departed from the government building in several cars, drove through the bustling city center of Fusang Kyoto, and arrived at a remote area on the outskirts.

The car stopped in what looked like an ordinary military camp. Apart from a few inconspicuous gray cement buildings, there were large groves of cedar trees all around. There wasn't even a decent sign, but the camp was full of fully armed soldiers patrolling.

"Your security measures are quite good," Chambers said casually, finally losing the aggressive contempt he had shown earlier.

"Of course, this is currently Japan's top-secret facility." Hiroshi Takeda walked ahead, his voice carrying an undisguised pride.

Hiroshi Takeda led Chambers through three heavily guarded checkpoints requiring both fingerprint and iris verification, and into a freight elevator hidden deep within a supply warehouse.

The control panel inside the elevator has only one floor button, next to which is a small red and white umbrella-shaped logo, which was added by the researchers at the Fusang Biochemical Research Institute.

All the researchers in the institute are now huge fans of Resident Evil, so sometimes they can't help but add a bit of the Umbrella Corporation element to the lab.

The elevator descended about six floors before stopping, and when the doors opened, a strong smell of disinfectant hit us.

The corridor is lined with laboratories separated by transparent reinforced glass, and researchers in full protective suits and breathing masks are busy in each laboratory.

At the end of the corridor was a heavy, airtight door. Hiroshi Takeda placed his palm on the identification panel and entered a sixteen-digit password before the airtight door slowly slid open to both sides.

The space behind the door was much larger than Chambers had anticipated.

It was a giant laboratory with a ceiling height of ten meters. In the center, there were more than a dozen cylindrical transparent culture chambers, each more than two people tall, filled with light green nutrient solution.

Various organisms of different shapes are suspended in the nutrient solution. Some can still be barely identified by their original species, while others have been distorted and mutated to the point that it is impossible to determine their original appearance.

One of the crocodiles had two heads, each on a different cervical vertebra. All four eyes were open, and it had several more rows of teeth than a normal crocodile. Tentacle-like hyphae were constantly wriggling in its mouth.

A deer with four antlers, but its antlers are not the branched bony structure of deer antlers. Instead, they spread outwards in a coral-like shape, like the fruiting body of some kind of fungus, and the surface is covered with fine sporangia.

There were also some strange creatures with mycelium-like things on them.

"These were all cultivated by us using spores," a voice came from the side.

Chambers turned his head and saw an old man wearing a white lab coat, with gray hair but unusually bright eyes, walking quickly towards him. His white lab coat had the badge of the Fusang Biochemical Research Institute pinned to his chest, and he was holding a tablet computer in his hand.

"My name is Nobuyuki Nakajima, and I'm in charge here." The old man bowed slightly to Chambers, his tone full of respect.
