Chapter 4 Personal Testimonials
Looking at Wang Youliang's expression, Li Qing couldn't help but laugh and jokingly said to him.
"What are you worried about? You're a cop, you just arrest people if they commit crimes!"
Li Qing's ambiguous smile earned him a roll of the eyes from Wang Youliang.
"Get lost, get lost, arrest them? How old are these kids?"
They're too young. If I keep them around for half their lives, it'll ruin them. But if they're all adults, do you think I'll still have a problem?
"They're all minors, the oldest is only seventeen. For people this age, our approach is mainly guidance!"
Upon hearing Wang Youliang's words, Li Qing immediately had an idea. Since the police station was so worried, why didn't he get involved in the matter?
Back when he was at the old tool factory, the timing wasn't right; otherwise, he would have taught them a lesson.
Now is the perfect time; with the police watching, he's not worried about being ignored!
"Director Wang, how about I tell them about my experiences back in the day? So they can have a clearer understanding of what it's like to be a gangster?"
Wang Youliang's eyes widened. After hearing what he said, he felt a sense of absurdity. In their police station, they were letting an old hoodlum who had given up his life teach the next generation of hoodlums.
Was he still half asleep today? I can't believe I heard that in his office at the police station.
But when he thought about Li Qing's past, the scales in his heart unconsciously tipped.
Maybe, perhaps, it might actually work!
Thinking of this, he ignored Li Qing, who was still sitting, and picked up the landline phone on his desk.
After hanging up the phone, Wang Youliang and Li Qing stared at each other for a short while. Then, the office door was pushed open from the outside, and a woman in her forties walked in.
"What's wrong, Lao Wang? You can't tell me over the phone, why did you have to call me over here to talk?"
Li Qing recognized the person who walked in; it was Ren Hongyun, a deputy section-level instructor at the same level as Wang Youliang.
"Sister Ren!" Li Qing greeted the newcomer politely.
"Hongyun, please sit down first, then I'll talk to you."
Wang Youliang asked someone to sit down first, and then told Ren Hongyun what Li Qing had just talked about.
After listening, Ren Hongyun fell into thought. She felt that Li Qing's suggestion was actually quite plausible.
Previously, law enforcement work was very difficult with these minors who were hard to find evidence against and difficult to manage.
They usually can't punish too severely, and if they punish too lightly, it won't have any effect. Those kids simply don't listen to the police.
Now that Li Qing wants to use his personal experience to offer advice, it might actually have some effect.
Even if it's just to bring one person back, that would be a good outcome.
"Old Wang, I feel like we can give that thing you just mentioned a try, even if it doesn't work."
If it really works, then we won't have to worry about this anymore.
After Ren Hongyun finished speaking, Li Qing saw Wang Youliang nodding repeatedly. Finally, as if he had made some extraordinary decision, he suddenly slapped the sofa.
"Okay, it's decided then. The instructor will make the necessary record with you in a bit."
Wang Youliang was assigning tasks to Ren Hongyun, while he turned to look at Li Qing.
"Li Qing, come with me. Those bastards are all in the detention room right now."
I originally planned to leave them hanging for a day before making any decisions, so I didn't take their statements immediately.
This is a perfect situation. In a little while, you can talk to them over the fence!
As they talked, the two came down from the second floor, passed through the case-handling hall, the interview room, the waiting room, and other places, and finally stopped at the detention room.
In front of me were two rooms, each about ten square meters in size. Along three of the walls of the rooms, there was a long row of benches.
Each room was crammed with about twenty people, making Li Qing feel incredibly crowded.
Some people couldn't even squeeze into a seat and ended up sitting on the floor in the middle of the room.
With so many people, the air quality is bound to be poor; Li Qing felt it was even worse than the air quality in his billiards hall.
When the two of them arrived, the two groups of people who had been assigned to separate rooms were still arguing incessantly.
Li Qing felt a headache coming on. These brainless people didn't even think about where they were.
This is a temporary detention center for people at the police station. The cameras overhead have audio recording capabilities. The things they said make it seem like there's no need for interrogation; they've completely covered their tracks.
This is because Wang Youliang and his colleagues didn't take it seriously and were still planning to give them a chance; otherwise, they would have already handled it as a normal case and submitted it to the Juvenile Procuratorate.
Li Qing turned to look at Wang Youliang and gestured to him. After receiving a response, he walked forward and stopped in front of the iron bars of the two rooms.
He placed his hands in front of his chest and clapped them twice. The two groups that were arguing earlier all turned their attention to Li Qing.
Seeing that everyone was watching him, he didn't waste any time and immediately spoke.
"Was it uncomfortable staying in there? Did you feel very uncomfortable talking to me through the iron bars?"
After Li Qing finished speaking, he stopped talking and quietly waited for the group's reaction.
The crowd, who had just quieted down, heard his question and, as if seeing a long-lost relative, all started complaining.
Some said it was boring, some said there was nowhere to sit, and some even said they couldn't play games without a phone.
Li Qing felt a headache coming on. They really didn't know their own limitations. This was the standard procedure for handling cases in the last ten years.
Otherwise, given the appearance of this group of people, they would at least have to find a radiator to handcuff you first. The way they can't stand up straight or squat down would make you uncomfortable for more than an hour.
There's a saying that goes something like this: "A police baton shatters brotherhood, three pages of statements, two pages of names."
They couldn't be hit by police batons, but their posture back then was just as bad as being hit by a police baton.
"You should be grateful! You should be thankful we didn't have to resort to any tricks! Don't you even know where you are? Do you think this is your own home?"
Li Qing's words brought everyone to their senses, and they all fell silent.
"I'm here today for one thing only: I want to talk to you as someone who's been through this."
Back in the old tool factory, the time and place weren't right, but I didn't say much. Now that we're in the artillery bureau, we can talk properly.
As Li Qing spoke, he turned around, pulled over a chair from the side, and sat down with an air of authority.
Judging from his current appearance—a floral shirt, black pants, and red wing boots suitable for cycling—one could vaguely see some tattoos through his open collar.
Compared to him, it seems Li Qing should be in the detention room rather than sitting outside.
"What do you want to say to you?"
Sitting still, Li Qing asked himself a question, his mind racing. Then, he started to speak about whatever came to mind.
"I'm thirty this year, born in 1992. I was just like you, fifteen or sixteen years old, and I couldn't concentrate on my studies either. I dropped out of junior high school..."
