Chapter 53 Entrusting the Orphan
Chapter 53 Entrusting the Orphan
In the quiet room, Count Poria sat weakly to the side, looking at Adir before him, and continued to tell his story slowly.
"Our ancestor came from a very distant continent and was a powerful wizard."
"More than a hundred years ago, he came to the North, leaving behind his bloodline and some things for us as well."
Looking at Adir, Poria took out the amulet from the purple wooden box, his eyes filled with complex emotions: "This is a wizard's item, a legendary enchanted object, and also a certificate."
"If any descendant of our Fakus family possesses the talent of a wizard, then with these credentials, they can travel to the southern kingdoms and sail to the continent where wizards reside."
"Adir, you should know that besides Elwa, I have an eldest son who went to the southern kingdom when he was young and has not returned to this day."
"Could it be?" Adir suddenly realized.
"Yes." At this point, Count Poria gave a bitter smile. "My eldest son has the potential to be a wizard, so I sent him away a long time ago, and I still haven't heard from him."
"That's why those people attacked us."
He said somewhat quietly, "In our Fakus family, the blood of wizards flows, so occasionally some members of the family will have the aptitude of wizards."
"In fact, it's not just our family; in many surrounding kingdoms, the royal families and nobles are mostly of wizarding blood, which is why they have been able to rule a kingdom for so long."
"Over the past century, our family has produced individuals with wizarding talents at various times. Although none of these individuals have become true wizards, they are still very powerful and have connections with other wizards. This is why the surrounding kingdoms have not dared to attack us, and this has continued to this day."
"In recent decades, fewer and fewer people in our family have had the talent of a wizard. The only one to appear was my eldest son, but there has been no news of him for so long, which is why those around us couldn't help but take action against us."
At this point, he couldn't help but cough a few times, his voice becoming even weaker: "Adir, do you know why your father and I value you so much?"
"The offspring of humans and elves will inherit the strengths of both, and are more likely to inherit the talents of wizards than ordinary people."
"Adir, you not only possess great knightly talent, but also wizardly talent."
Upon hearing these words in front of Count Polya, Adir paused slightly, looking somewhat surprised.
Seeing his expression, Count Poria shook his head: "There is no doubt that you possess the talent of a wizard. Your father and I confirmed this when you were just born."
He slowly raised his trembling right arm and handed the black amulet forward: "This certificate should actually have been given to you more than half a year ago, but at that time, the orc riots had just occurred and the surrounding situation was not very good, so we did not choose to send you out."
"And now, even if I wanted to send you away, I'm afraid I couldn't."
Poria gave a wry smile: "Every year, the fleet of wizards from afar will stop on the southern coast to accept some new wizard apprentices."
"After you leave the North, take Elwa and the others to a kingdom in the South. There, our family members are stationed, which will be enough to ensure your livelihood."
"Once you get there, give this letter to the person in charge, and he will know what to do."
He trembled as he took a letter from his pocket and handed it to Adir as well.
The letter was written on a type of paper that was very rare in the North. It was folded very neatly, but some of the handwriting was a bit messy, as if the pen had not been held steady when it was written.
Adir silently accepted the letter and placed it in his bosom, as if treasuring it greatly.
The scene fell silent for a moment, until Count Polya's voice broke the silence once again.
"You don't need to worry about anything unnecessary with Elwar."
Count Poria said somewhat quietly, "By now, the North cannot be defended. The people of Arcadilla were merely making initial probes; the true power of the major kingdoms has not yet been unleashed. If Elwa continues to stay here, his fate will not be good."
"Over the years, our family has also wielded considerable power in the various kingdoms of the south. Although it is not as powerful as in the north and we can no longer maintain the same level of influence as before, we can still live a decent life without any problems."
Hearing this, Adir didn't speak, but simply nodded silently.
This is indeed a wise choice.
Based on Adir's understanding of Elwa, if Elwa continued to stay in the North, he would be devoured by those people in the current situation, leaving not even bones behind, and would not have a good ending at all.
Count Polia clearly understood his son's abilities and was well aware of the surrounding situation, harboring no illusions whatsoever.
Time is slowly passing by.
Seemingly sensing that his life was about to come to an end, Count Poria spoke a great deal, revealing many things from the past.
Sensing the emotions of the person in front of him, Adir wisely refrained from interrupting, only occasionally asking questions.
"...According to family records, the continent we live on is actually very barren compared to other continents. Not only are resources scarce, but it also lacks a suitable environment. It is a place abandoned by wizards."
"Those wizards live on other continents, where there are many dangers, far more terrifying than here."
"And your mother was actually an elven refugee who drifted from another continent. She was brought to this continent by those merchants and eventually bought back by us, which is how you came to be."
Before they knew it, Polya was talking about Adir's mother, muttering to himself.
"Refugees?" Adir asked, somewhat puzzled.
"Yes, refugees." Count Poria shook his head, and after feeling himself clearer, he said with certainty, "Decades ago, in the land of the elves, a terrible disaster seemed to have broken out. In just a few years, several elven kingdoms collapsed one after another, and a large number of elven refugees were taken away by slave traders and sold to surrounding areas. Your mother was one of them."
"After your mother was bought, she was unable to communicate with us because of the language barrier."
"The only thing we know is that your mother was born into a minor noble family in an elven kingdom."
At this point, Polya paused, then took out a badge from the side, embroidered with a purple bird with a silver moon in its beak.
"This is the crest of honor your mother wore back then, representing her noble status. If you want to find your mother, you can try to find her if you have the opportunity in the future."
Hearing his words, Adir silently accepted the small emblem and remained silent for a moment.
Before him, Count Poria was still muttering to himself, but his voice was growing softer and softer until it was about to fall silent.
Adir stood there quietly for a while, and only let out a sigh when the sounds in front of him had completely disappeared.
At that moment, a strong hand suddenly reached out and patted Adir on the shoulder.
Adir was startled and instinctively tried to pull the hand away, but he didn't move.
"Adir!!"
Count Poria suddenly spoke in front of Adir, his voice hoarse but firm.
He grabbed Adir's shoulder, and with the last of his strength, he cried out, "Promise me!!! Take good care of Elva for me!!!"
Polya gripped Adir's shoulders tightly, shouting with all his might, his face contorted in a ferocious and terrifying grimace.
His gaze was fixed on Adir, a pleading look appearing in his eyes.
The scene fell silent for a moment.
Adir fell silent after hearing Count Poria's words.
Time passed slowly, and before their eyes, Count Poria's life was rapidly fading away. The arm that had been gripping his shoulder was growing weaker and weaker, and he was about to face his final journey.
Seeing the sorrow in the other person's eyes and the gradually dimming light, Adir sighed and stood still before speaking.
"I'll do my best..." he said softly, looking at the person in front of him.
As soon as he finished speaking, one arm fell limply to its side, finally losing its last bit of strength.
