Chapter 102 Small Town Chat
Chapter 102 Small Town Chat (Seeking Recommendation Votes!)
After the blood is drawn into a vacuum bottle, it can be stored in a refrigerator at a constant temperature of 4 degrees Celsius for seven days. Thor's blood sample can be stored for even longer because he is fundamentally different from humans. Even though his divine power is sealed by Odin's spell, Thor can still have an incredibly long lifespan.
However, Salomon still returned to Kamar-Taj to preserve the blood sample in his refrigerator. He wasn't some wild sorcerer; there was no need to carry all his belongings with him—who knew what might happen? He also wore the rapier given to him by Joan of Arc at his waist and explained his actions to the Sorcerer Supreme. Salomon, expecting reprimand, found that the Sorcerer Supreme made no comment. The Supreme even supported Salomon's idea of pitting human military forces against Asgardian military forces.
This was just a small experiment, a warning to humanity, a warning not to be so preoccupied with grabbing sugar from the ground, but to look up, climb the grass stalks, and look down at the meadow, for there is dew, a gentle breeze, and the carcasses of dead animals—far more valuable than a few grains of sugar. Perhaps humanity will face storms and hunts, but the future world will no longer tolerate such petty squabbles, for countless enemies and disasters are already approaching Earth.
"It all depends on how determined Odin is. Maybe Odin is even hoping Thor will unleash his power on his deathbed, but even Odin can't control the whole situation down to the smallest detail," the Sorcerer Supreme said. "Don't let Thor die. That's the only condition. Earth needs him, and the Nine Realms need him."
"I will, teacher," Salomon nodded in response.
"Perhaps...perhaps you could try to contact Thor." The Venerable hesitated, knowing that Salomon and Thor weren't very compatible. "Do as you please, there's no need to force it."
"Yes, Master." Salomon bowed and left the Sorcerer Supreme's meditation room, preparing to reopen the portal and return to Oldbridge. However, Kasirius saw Salomon, called him back, and walked over.
He looked somewhat unhappy, and his gray stubble had reappeared. "I didn't go to the parent-teacher conference," Cassirius said, somewhat disgruntled that Athena had taken his place. "I'm your guardian. Who is that woman?"
"Another guardian chosen by the Sorcerer Supreme." Salomon shrugged. "Are you unhappy about something like this? I thought it was because the Sorcerer Supreme didn't take you to Asgard!"
“I’m not some crying, candy-giving child. I’ve been to Asgard several times already.” Kasirius rolled his eyes. “I just want to know why that mysterious woman is your guardian. I don’t trust her.”
The Sorcerer Supreme hadn't revealed Athena's existence to anyone else, so Salomon couldn't just reveal it either; he had to find an excuse. "That woman is an acquaintance of the Sorcerer Supreme," he said. "Perhaps part of the reason is that you can't help me with my homework anymore."
"Shit!" Cassirios frowned, looking somewhat disdainful. "Just because of that?"
"Okay, let me ask you, what happens when lithium-ion batteries are in a low-temperature environment..."
Cassilios raised his hands in surrender. "Okay, okay, we can skip this. The question now is, where are you going? Are you coming back for lunch?"
"I'm going to be a babysitter for a blond baby," Salomon said helplessly. "As for lunch, forget it. I want to try Mexican food today. I have a feeling I'll like the green chili sauce."
Nick Fury didn't use the information Salomon provided to search for Thor in town because he didn't know Thor's current mental state. But logically speaking, Thor's current situation is like that of an agent whose personal information has been leaked and who has no weapons. If he were in that kind of environment, he would inevitably feel insecure. If he took the initiative to go to Thor's town, it would be counterproductive.
Therefore, he planned to "guard the hammer and wait for the gods".
He also informed Agent Coulson, instructing him: if anyone breaks into the temporary research base, do not harm them. However, Nick Fury maintained his mystical style, not revealing too much information to Coulson, and Agent Coulson understood his superior's rule: never ask questions that shouldn't be asked.
That's why Salomon had the opportunity to eat at the only restaurant in Oldbridge. He didn't use illusion magic to hide his rapier, because to others he was just oddly dressed, but if he encountered Thor, his identity as a spellcaster might be discovered. Salomon didn't want to show off; he was there to eat.
To his disappointment, the only restaurant in Old Bridge didn't offer much of New Mexico cuisine, but thankfully, they did have green chili sauce. Although his attire was different from everyone else's, that wasn't a reason for the restaurant to refuse service, and the owner didn't stop him from ordering. However, he ordered far too much food, so much that the owner gave him a suspicious look.
"You're the second person I've seen eat this much today." As Isi placed Salomon's food on the table, she couldn't help but complain about the bizarre guests she'd encountered that day. "That blond guy ate a whole plate of beef steak with eggs and flatbread, and his companion barely ate anything. He even broke one of my cups! If that girl hadn't been in town for a while, I would have kicked him out! And those two cowards, Jack and Pete, were actually afraid of that guy!"
"You didn't get angry because he's too big, did you?" retorted Jack, a chubby man sitting at the counter, who weighed at least 350 pounds.
"I'm a woman! You're a man! I knew you were a coward, all the men in town are cowards!" Isie, whose physique was in no way inferior to Jack's, slammed the coffee pot heavily on the counter. Jack's plate nearly jumped up in dissatisfaction, spilling its contents of scrambled eggs all over the customer. "No refills for your coffee today!"
"Please don't do this, Isie," Petra drawled. "You saw how strong that guy was. Good heavens, I feel like he could lift a car!"
"That's because you're a coward too!" Isie walked over with the Coke Salomon had ordered. "I'm better at fighting than you! I could take on three sissies like you!"
"Has that girl been here long?" Salomon asked casually. His handsome face gave him a strong sense of friendliness, and Isi didn't mind chatting with this good-looking guest for a while longer.
"She's been here a long time. She's supposedly some kind of astronomer named Jane Foster. They say she drives out to the desert every night, nobody knows what she does there, there's nothing there. She also brought another girl with her, and all the men in town stare at her chest… I have one too, but those cowards just won't look at me… But someone saw some random equipment at Smith's Auto Shop, she lives there, and she has a camper van. Recently, an old man who looks like a professor also came there. Oh, right, you don't know Smith? He's the auto shop owner whose wife ran off with someone else. Ever since Stark Industries withdrew their funding, things have gotten worse here, nobody rents cars anymore, and Smith's wife ran off with some guy in town who sells trailers." Isie talked a lot, but Salomon didn't mind. The advantage of the portal magic was that you could travel anywhere anytime, and he didn't mind hearing about the local customs and traditions.
Isie continued yelling at the top of her lungs, “Those damn rich people, they took all the resources and then forgot about us! I even applauded when Stark disappeared! If it weren’t for my daughter’s crush on that playboy, I would have bought fireworks to celebrate! Now, at least half of the young people in town are drug addicts, and half of the rest have gone to work in big cities. But if you ask me, those kids who went out are still quite capable; even washing dishes in a big city is better than staying in this small town. Those who stay here are ruined for life; they wander around town every day, unable to find anything to do. And that damn medical marijuana dispensary is open every day; you can get the doctor to prescribe a dose for any excuse, even if you’re in a bad mood. It’s really killing me; my daughter is thinking about getting high every day. This would have been illegal before, but since a few years ago (07), the government has gone mad and wants to turn everyone into a drug addict.”
"Issey, your gravy patties were delicious," Salomon said. "Is there anything else I should know?"
"I don't know where you're from, young man," Isie glanced at Salomon's rapier. "Did you come from some circus?"
"I am a wizard, Ms. Isey," Salomon readily admitted, knowing that no one would believe him if he told the truth. However, he quickly continued his lie, "I came here with my friends on a trip. When we passed through, we heard that a satellite had fallen, so we thought we'd come and see what was going on. Apparently, this is the best restaurant in town."
"There's only one restaurant in town, kid, don't flatter me." Although Isie said this, Salomon's praise still pleased her greatly, and more information flowed from her mouth. "You could read my palm, though. I don't know much about the satellite; let Jack tell you. Jack… you sissy, where have you been?!"
------------
Salomon stood at the edge of the circular pit, looking down at the temporary research base built by S.H.I.E.L.D. It was nighttime, and the research base was brightly lit, but even when S.H.I.E.L.D. searchlights swept over him, no one could spot him.
He was waiting.
