Chapter 1084 The Long Early Summer (Second Update)

A lot happened in the long month of June.

Following this, another left-wing congressman commented on social media that America's air defense system had become ineffective. Reports indicate that the United States plans to increase budgets for intelligence agencies such as the FBI and CIA, with the aim of "investigating terrorist activities in Europe." However, it's clear to everyone that the real reason is Latvia's military strength, which the White House perceives as a threat. A media source revealed that an unnamed NASA employee stated the US plans to launch a large number of communication and military satellites within the next month to compensate for Latvia's loss of access to European geostationary communication and navigation satellites. Simultaneously, the US will also be developing a large number of anti-satellite missiles to counter the Latvian threat.

Some foreign experts have interpreted the US move as part of the Star Wars program.

The Star Wars program, also known as the Strategic Defense Initiative, was a military strategic plan developed by the United States in the 1980s. Its background was the late Cold War, when the Soviet Union possessed a more powerful nuclear strike force than the United States. Fearing a disruption of the "nuclear balance," the US needed to establish an effective anti-missile system to ensure the survivability and reliable deterrent capability of its strategic nuclear forces and maintain its nuclear superiority. This program consisted of two parts: the "Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Defense Program" and the "Anti-Satellite Program," with a budget exceeding one trillion US dollars. Its goal was to build a laser device in space to act as an anti-ballistic missile system, destroying enemy nuclear weapons before they entered the atmosphere.

This plan originated from a famous speech given by US President Ronald Reagan in the later stages of the Cold War (March 23, 1983). Its core content was to use various means to attack enemy intercontinental ballistic missiles and spacecraft in outer space to prevent nuclear strikes against the United States and its allies by hostile nations. Its technical means included deploying high-energy directed-fire weapons (such as microwaves, lasers, high-energy particle beams, and electromagnetic kinetic weapons) or conventional strike weapons in outer space and on the ground to conduct multi-layered interception at various stages of an enemy strategic missile attack. The plan aimed to ensure that a significant number of US missiles would survive a large-scale nuclear attack by the Soviet Union.

However, until the collapse of the Soviet Union, the program, which had already cost nearly $100 billion, had to be indefinitely extended or even terminated due to high costs and technical difficulties. In the 1990s, the "Star Wars" program was announced to be suspended, and related resources were downsized and reorganized into the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. In 2002, it was renamed the Missile Defense Agency again.

After the Cold War, leaked CIA documents led to the perception that Star Wars was a hoax, with some arguing that it was merely a propaganda tool used by the US government to cripple the Soviet Union and instill panic. However, the Pentagon maintained that the program was not implemented due to technical flaws, not the hoax. Regardless of its veracity, Star Wars' material achievements were limited, yet many of its results and experimental devices remain functional. For example, the White Sands Proving Grounds developed a "beam ship" designed to replace chemical fuels with lasers, and the US's existing intercontinental ballistic missile early warning and interception system is still based on the achievements of Star Wars.
