Chapter 120 Another Heartbreak

Chapter 120 Another Heartbreak (Second Update! Please Vote!)

What happened in New York City naturally didn't escape Nick Fury's notice. Although Salomon refused to answer his calls, he still made his most trusted agent Salomon's teammate in the game (the triplets in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), because Nick Fury believed that Salomon might not be as wary of others.

Salomon had no idea of the true identities of his teammates in Call of Duty. All he knew was that Kenig, Sam, and Eric were triplets who all looked exactly alike. Don't get me wrong, Salomon had never met them; they told him this themselves after playing a few games with him. Salomon also thought their voices were identical, as if they were spoken by the same person.

Nick Fury asked Kenig, Sam, and Eric to pretend they lived in New York and ask Salomon about the strange things happening in the city—like why an entire street of cars had turned into taxis. But Salomon was unusually tight-lipped; the sorcerer even claimed he was currently in London and knew nothing about what was happening in New York. It was instinctive—an instinctive avoidance of magic in conversations with ordinary people—something he had been taught from childhood.

Salomon wasn't the only one in trouble; the Merlin School, the instigators, were in the same boat. This story begins ten years ago when Dave and Balthazar met.

Dave, then a fourth-grade student, participated in a school-organized extracurricular activity. A teacher took a group of elementary school students to Ellis Island, across from the Statue of Liberty, to tell them about the history of the Statue's construction. Among these students, Dave handed a note to his first love, Becky, a lovely blonde girl, asking if she would be his girlfriend.

Becky wrote the answer on a note and set it aside. But when the teacher led the students onto the boat and Dave went to get the note, an annoying spring breeze blew by, carrying the note onto the sidewalk and sticking it to a bicycle tire. The bicycle carried the note across the street and a block until the rider tore it off and threw it aside. Dave, a primary school student, chased after the note, seeing it stick to the paw of a passing golden retriever until its owner noticed it. Dave was sure the woman had seen what was written on the note, otherwise she wouldn't have been laughing so happily. He continued chasing the torn note, finally finding it stuck to the door of a shop called "The Mystery House," but when he reached for it, the note slipped through the mail slot in the door.

As Dave cautiously pushed open the door and entered the messy shop, he encountered Balthazar. He stammered out why he had entered the shop, but Balthazar believed that this series of coincidences was a gift from fate, so he made Dave put Merlin's ring on his finger.

As it turned out, Balthazar's intuition was correct; the ring did indeed move in Dave's hand, and he was indeed the person Balthazar was looking for. This is how Dave and Balthazar met, but then an awkward thing happened—the curious elementary school student Dave accidentally released a wizard named Hophas. Although Balthazar imprisoned Hophas and himself in a magical artifact, during the fight, a fish tank overturned, and Dave's pants were accidentally splashed with water.

When the school teacher found Dave, she didn't believe him at all about the wizards fighting, because the store was unusually quiet and there was no one there. The other elementary school students noticed the wet stains on Dave's pants and started shouting that he had wet his pants, while Becky stood silently in the crowd watching Dave without saying a word.

At that moment, elementary school student Dave truly experienced social death. He transferred schools, received treatment, and doctors even named a new mental illness after him, with symptoms of glucose metabolism disorder. Dave had already forgotten what happened in the mystery house until ten years later, when he encountered Becky again while working as a physics teaching assistant. The artifact that could imprison people for ten years also released Balthazar and Hofas.

Now, Dave has rekindled his first love. The time he used magic in the subway station was because Becky was robbed, and Dave used magic to retrieve Becky's family heirloom bracelet. Balthazar is somewhat unhappy about this because Dave isn't fully committed to his magical studies; he's even using his research space and Balthazar's teaching area as a dating spot.

Balthazar, however, considerately gave Dave time for his date, going out for a "walk" herself. Dave, meanwhile, spent his research space casting spells and cleaning in preparation for Becky's arrival. But due to Dave's lack of skill and carelessness after casting the spell, all the cleaning supplies in the subway interchange went out of control. All the mops, brooms, sponges, and cleaning agents came to life, scrubbing everything in their path—plates, floors, coils, sockets—even Dave's dog was scrubbed by the mops.

Fortunately, Dave's recklessness prevented the completely out-of-control magic from blaring through the New York Sanctum's planetary defense system like a distorted loudspeaker, emitting a harsh, shrill sound. This allowed the furious Salomon to quickly locate Dave and Balthazar's hideout. He threw down the controller, swiftly donned his saffron robes, and headed towards the address.

"Hello, ma'am." Salomon walked up the worn concrete stairs towards the underground subway interchange, where he happened to meet a blonde woman. She was Becky, Dave's first love, who had come to ask Dave out. Before Becky could ask anything, Salomon spoke first, "Excuse me, who are you looking for?"

"Me?" Becky pointed to the door, then to herself, looking rather confused. Then, she seemed to understand, and said with a smile, "Are you here to see Dave too? Does Dave have tutoring work today? I just knocked, he'll be here soon."

"I'm sorry, ma'am," Salomon shrugged. "I came to see Dave or Balthazar. But in any case, I'm afraid they won't have time to see you today, as they have a lot of things to take care of."

"For example?" Becky raised her eyebrows, widened her eyes, and asked with great curiosity.

“For example, they’re being interrogated today.” Salomon stepped over the narrow staircase, past Becky, and placed his hand on the door. He smiled and said, “They’ve caused a lot of trouble. There’s been an accident inside, and someone has to take responsibility for these things.”

"Excuse me, what are you talking about?" Becky was completely confused; she didn't understand Salomon's meaning at all. "Did someone die in there? Who are you? What are you, FBI agent?"

"If I hadn't gone in, this would have been the result," Salomon said. "As for who I am... well, don't worry about it. Just think of me as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Hey, Dave, can you handle this problem?"

"Hi, Dave!" Becky greeted Dave as he opened the door. "This kid said he wanted to see you."

"You're really punctual," Dave said awkwardly, looking at Salomon. "Oh, it's you!"

Becky seemed to sense something was wrong with Dave, and she quickly asked, "Do you have any other plans for today? Are you alright, Dave?"

"What? Me? I'm fine, how about you? Ah!" Dave suddenly cried out in surprise as a mop pressed against his backside. Salomon narrowed his eyes; he had immediately taken on the mission and rushed over after discovering the magic had gone out of control. Although he didn't know what kind of magical accident it was, he knew that such a thing couldn't be known to an ordinary person.

"Excuse me, ma'am." Salomon squeezed through, standing in front of Becky and blocking her view. "Dave and I have some small matters to attend to."

"But you said you wanted to interrogate him..." Becky was very puzzled; she still didn't understand what had happened.

"That's a story for later. I'm here to help him out." Salomon nudged Dave's shin with his heel. "Am I right, Dave?"

"Yes, yes, that's right. Becky, I'm sorry, I have some things to take care of." Dave's voice seemed to be squeezed out through clenched teeth. "You should leave. Ah! What am I even saying..."

The apprentice mage groaned, unable to believe he had uttered such a word. Becky frowned; she hadn't expected Dave to be so rude as to order him to leave.

"Okay, I'm leaving." She glared at Dave, then at Salomon's innocent face, and stormed back down the stairs to the ground.

After Becky left, Salomon turned around, pushed Dave inside, and closed the door that was covered with asbestos panels.

"Oh no..." Dave covered his face, feeling like he had been dumped again. The last time he had been dumped was ten years ago, but the person he had dumped was the same one.

"What are you doing!" Salomon glared at Mop, who was also covering his "face" next to Dave, and demanded in a low voice, "Your magic has gone out of control! All of Kamar-Taj knows what you've done! Can't your Merlin School keep quiet for a second?!"

Dave ignored Salomon, still grieving the loss of his first love. Salomon shoved him down the stairs, and when he saw the scene before him, he realized just how reckless Dave had been. Almost everything that could move had come to life; the ground was flooded, with all sorts of random things floating on the surface, and a dog.

Salomon stopped Dave, who was trying to straighten the coil. It was clear from the electric sparks coming out of the coil that the thing was still electrified!

"Where is Balthazar?" Salomon shouted, but Dave only sighed at the sight before him. The arcane mage patted Dave on the head, and the apprentice mage finally gave the answer—Balthazar wasn't here.

"Then let's stop this disaster. After that, go to the New York Sanctum in Kamar-Taj; you and Balthazar will both be questioned." Salomon rolled his eyes, extending his hands to cast a spell. He blinked, quickly checking the distribution of magical energy, and finally, his gaze fell on Dave. Salomon didn't know what magic Dave had cast, nor did he know what Merlin's Transfiguration was. He didn't even need to know that information, because there was only one out-of-control spell here.

Solving this didn't require any special magic; all it took was countering the spell Dave was unconsciously casting and breaking its structure. After a while, everything stopped except for the still-spraying faucet. Dave stared blankly at the chaotic scene before him, then slumped onto the steps, finally closing his eyes in anguish.

"God, what have I done?"
