Chapter 122 Excalibur

Chapter 122 Excalibur (Second Update!)

Before hearing Balthazar recount the history of the Battle of Camlann and the fall of Camelot, Salomon had never imagined that Merlin's pranks could be so malicious. After hearing that history, his mood worsened. Yet, he still couldn't freely interfere in Merlin's school of thought. Although Kamar-Taj was the government of the wizarding world, it couldn't manage everything. Kamar-Taj's attitude was always laissez-faire until other schools of thought did something that endangered the world or violated the law.

So far, Balthazar had managed to handle the Morgan le Fay faction of wizards, none of whom were particularly formidable. Moreover, these Morgan le Fay wizards were even more compliant with the rules of Kamar-Taj than Balthazar and Dave, because they had never revealed the secrets of their magic to ordinary people—until Balthazar told Salomon that it was Hofas who had turned an entire street of cars into taxis.

Then they can be arrested and detained for a few days. After the arrest, these Morgan le Fay faction magicians will be questioned about whether they have committed indiscriminate killing. Under the influence of magic, no one can lie, and Kamar-Taj will punish them accordingly for their actions, ranging from warnings and education to detention, from life imprisonment to the death penalty, all according to the law.

Salomon planned to return to Kamar-Taj to submit a report. After all, capturing the Morgan le Fay faction's magicians couldn't be done by him alone. He needed to inform the temple deacons of the situation, who would then arrange for any currently unavailable arcane mages to carry out the capture.

As for the Sorcerer Supreme, Salomon planned to first explain the general situation, since the Temple deacons would then submit a detailed report to the Sorcerer Supreme, so he wouldn't need to elaborate. When Salomon returned to Kamar-Taj headquarters after submitting the Merlin School's report to the New York Temple, intending to discuss the matter with the Sorcerer Supreme, he saw the Sorcerer Supreme using a small white cloth, dampened with warm water from a teacup, to wipe the bloodstains from his fist and the ring.

Who was so unlucky as to have been punched by the Sorcerer Supreme? Salomon walked over, took the cloth, and helped the Sorcerer Supreme clean the bloodstains. Seemingly sensing Salomon's curiosity, the Sorcerer Supreme didn't hide his itinerary or the name of the unfortunate soul.

"I went to Wells, and from there I entered Avalon." The Sorcerer Supreme produced a deep red apple out of thin air; even without Salomon leaning in, he could smell its sweet, fruity fragrance. The Sorcerer Supreme placed the apple in Salomon's arms, saying, "This is a specialty of Apple Isle in Avalon. As for that unfortunate fellow you guessed, he was actually Merlin."

"You fought with Merlin?" Salomon stopped what he was doing in surprise. "Why?"

"Merlin has gone too far," the Venerable said. "From the time of Camelot until now, I have never forgiven that fellow. Moreover, I have found you as my successor, so naturally I must reclaim what is mine. By the way, that fellow has no chance of fighting back; I am the king."

"You mean... the Holy Sword?"

“Yes, the Holy Sword,” the Sorcerer Supreme said, opening her hands after cleaning up the bloodstains. A wooden box inlaid with silver vine patterns appeared in her palms. She placed the box on the table and pushed it towards Salomon, gesturing for her disciple to open it. Salomon set down the cloth, unlocked the tightly closed brass latch, and slowly opened the box, revealing the Holy Sword within.

This sword was not a man-made weapon, but a divine artifact forged by Gaia, the Earth Mother Goddess and embodiment of this planet, to protect it. It stands at the pinnacle of this world, a powerful treasure that leaves everyone who sees it stunned by its beauty and majesty. It possesses the distinctive curved guard of Celtic swords, a golden guard approximately four inches wide, the blade about two inches at its widest point, and the blade itself about three feet long. The clasp between the guard and the blade is adorned with striking and exquisite blue enamel decorations, and the hilt can be held with both hands. Salomon could not discern what metal the sword was made of; the golden guard was not as supple as gold, and the cold blade felt intensely hot to the touch.

The Sorcerer Supreme seemed pleased with Salomon's astonished expression. She picked up the holy sword, swung it casually a few times, and then placed it in Salomon's hand. The sorcerer received the holy sword with utmost care. He found the sword extremely pleasing to the eye. At the Sorcerer Supreme's instruction, Salomon infused it with a little magic, causing the sword to burst forth with an extremely dazzling golden light.

"Thor possesses a powerful hammer, so you, being of equal status, should also possess a powerful holy sword," the Venerable said. "However, since this sword is so powerful, it also has corresponding limitations. But I think this is a good thing. I don't want you to become a guy like Thor who only thinks with a hammer."

"Restrictions?" Salomon had never heard of such a thing. Faced with his disciple's question, the Venerable One answered with great patience.

"There are thirteen seals in total. Once the conditions are met, the seals will be broken. And with each seal you break, the sword's power will increase. Once you meet half the conditions for breaking the seals, the sword's power will be at its maximum." The Venerable's expression suddenly became serious. "I've always worried whether Odin would keep his promise, but once you take this sword, Odin will have no choice but to keep his promise, because when this holy sword is at its maximum power, it can even shatter stars. Even if Odin refuses to keep his promise, you can still negotiate with Asgard when faced with the threat of the Bifrost."

Salomon fell silent, for the topic was heavy and cruel. He had heard the Sorcerer Supreme speak of her pact with Odin. Because Odin feared the Sorcerer Supreme's potential attack on Asgard after his death, the Sorcerer Supreme relinquished her responsibilities before Odin, following the eternal gods. Conversely, the Sorcerer Supreme also worried that Odin might break the pact, attempting to forcibly conquer Earth after her departure to perpetuate Asgard's authority. Odin, a capable ruler, breaking pacts was commonplace for him. This was why the Sorcerer Supreme had entrusted the title and the sword to Salomon—to intimidate Asgard and remind Odin that while Kamar-Taj could no longer protect Earth from Asgard after her departure, she possessed the power to destroy Asgard. If the pact wasn't kept, Earth and the Aesir pantheon would face a mutually destructive outcome.

"However, even before its restraints are lifted, this sword is powerful enough. As long as your magic is sufficient, it can unleash power comparable to Thor's hammer." The Sorcerer Supreme gently stroked Salomon's hair. "I believe you will use this sword in the right way. I have always trusted you, Salomon. But I'm sorry to have burdened you with a responsibility you shouldn't have had to bear."

"I don't think you need to feel sorry, Master. On the contrary, I'm very happy." Salomon gently stroked the holy sword. A specific upbringing can lead to a specific perspective. Salomon grew up in Kamar-Taj and absorbed the memories of those spellcasters. His complex personality and memories made him see the Venerable's gift as a direction in life, rather than a heavy responsibility. But this was also a kind of madness, only a perfectly timed one.

"I am grateful to you for showing me what I should do. If you hadn't adopted me, I might have starved to death, frozen to death, or even if I had survived, I might have gone mad because of that knowledge, or simply lived aimlessly in this world. I am glad that I have a goal, even if I didn't set it myself."

"This is your life, but I still hope you have something of your own." The Sorcerer Supreme gestured for Salomon to put the holy sword back into its wooden box, as it wasn't the time to reveal it. He continued, "Although I feel there's a significant age gap between you and Bayonetta, I won't object as long as you're happy, because it's your own feeling. When do you plan to have children?"

Salomon hadn't expected the Venerable One to jump to such a rapid topic, one second discussing life and death, the next leaping to family matters. The sorcerer looked embarrassed; he didn't know if elders all over the world had a habit of pressuring people to get married. He explained that he and Bayonetta hadn't officially defined their relationship yet, and considering such things now was too hasty, especially since he was still a high school student.

However, His Holiness believed that Salomon, at an age where he could take up arms and go to war, should seriously consider this matter. Although Bayonetta and Salomon would both live much longer than ordinary people, His Holiness did not want to wait a hundred years to hold their child. The Sorcerer Supreme also stated that if it really did take a hundred years, it wouldn't be a big deal; she could help take care of the child then, because she had accumulated a great deal of experience raising Salomon. When Salomon couldn't fully control his muscles, it was His Holiness who helped change his diapers.

Salomon fled in disarray.

"Master!" Salomon returned a moment later, but this time he didn't even dare to show himself from behind the door. He asked loudly, "What about the Merlin School?"

"Let the deacons of the New York Temple lead the team; you can participate if you have time. If Morgan le Fay's avatar appears... it's up to you."
