Chapter 1223 Synchronous Action

Chapter 1223 Synchronized Action (Second Update)

It started when a Vatican Swiss Guard soldier twisted his ankle while on duty and was recuperating in his barracks. Then, an acute infectious disease spread among the Swiss Guard, and by the afternoon, almost all the soldiers were suffering from a strange bout of diarrhea. To protect the Pope's safety, the Pope had to temporarily distance himself from the Swiss Guard while pathologists and disease control officials determined the cause of the illness.

Then, a seemingly insignificant car accident occurred. An ordinary Swiss bank employee sustained minor injuries, but after being taken to the hospital by ambulance, he was never seen again. A few hours later, a CIA informant working at the Swiss bank was robbed by refugees on his way home from get off work. During the struggle, he was shot and killed, and his valuables were stolen.

Local police found the bank manager's briefcase in a trash can not far from the crime scene. Fortunately, all the confidential documents were still neatly inside; only the cash had been taken. They had seen the same thing four times that day, and not every time someone died. The other unfortunate victims were an accountant from an Italian finance company, an assistant to an American businessman, and the wife of an American Jewish real estate developer.

"Pah, refugees who are everywhere."

A Swiss cantonal policeman spat, but dared not speak loudly, for outside were the media outlets of unscrupulous tabloids. A shooting was a big deal here—referring to the killing of a Swiss citizen, not counting conflicts between refugees—these Middle Eastern refugees now roamed the streets daily, forming gangs and competing with local mafia for market share, causing crime, yet no one dared to question it. Politicians, to demonstrate their political leanings, accepted large numbers of refugees, using taxpayers' money to build refugee housing, establish refugee councils, meet all the needs of these Middle Easterners, and even planned to cut police budgets to prevent excessive force against refugees. If Swiss police were discovered to dislike refugees, they could face public criticism and lose their careers; therefore, even when faced with cases committed by refugees, Swiss police could only report to their superiors, leaving the decisions to those sitting in their offices.

"There's nothing we can do." The sheriff's expression was obscured by the flashing red and blue lights. "This is politics, not law."

"Yeah, how much longer are we going to put up with this?" The younger officer looked annoyed. "Before, we just arrested some young drug addicts without even firing a shot. Those idiots would have preferred jail, at least that's where they could get their fill, but now..."

"Alright, that's good, we've found the item." The sheriff waved his hand. "This time it was a man who died, so we'll just issue a statement of condolence and that's it. If it had been a woman... those women who welcome refugees will take matters into their own hands and deal with her, so we don't need to worry about that."

“We’ve got the financial statements, Your Holiness. We have the flow of funds in our hands,” Nick Fury said. After receiving a reply from the other end of the phone, he shook his head. “I’m sorry, I can’t give you those documents right now. This is a classified operation, and we can’t involve unqualified people… Copies are not allowed, and you can’t know our next move. Our enemy is the Vatican, or perhaps all the Vatican Orders. If you’re smart, you’d better follow the instructions of the agents I’ve sent; they’re now acting as private security advisors. Follow all the rules: single-line contact, food checks, minimal social interaction, and even your drinking water must be random bottled water.”

After hanging up the phone, Nick Fury breathed a sigh of relief.

"Next destination, sir?" Agent Maria Hill asked. The command-type Pegasus heavy assault transport ship was filled with Nick Fury's most trusted men. Maria Hill had spent some time at Avengers Tower, successfully evading surveillance after dealing with inquiries from Washington, and had returned to her job. The current mission wasn't too difficult for her; the Avengers' mission plans were child's play for the old S.H.I.E.L.D., and this job was enough to rekindle her spirit.

"Sir," Maria Hill hesitated, "Are we still S.H.I.E.L.D.? Should we reorganize the Avengers?"

"How's Agent Coulson doing?" Nick Fury didn't answer the question, but instead asked his old subordinate on the other side of the world. The small black box he gave Agent Coulson contained many of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s secrets, but not all of them. Agent Coulson still needed to uncover the secrets of the Beacon Base himself.

"Very good. Although there is a shortage of manpower, he has done his best."

“Then let him continue as S.H.I.E.L.D. We can always step in when he encounters something he can’t handle.” Nick Fury shook his head. Compared to the Emperor’s Pegasus heavy assault transport ship, the command system on Nick Fury’s aircraft was much more rudimentary, but it still allowed him to keep track of the Royal Guard’s intelligence movements and mission progress. “The best thing is that in everyone else’s eyes I’m dead, and only Ghosts can move freely. There are no Avengers now. Clint and his family have changed identities and retired completely. Agent Romanoff has cut off contact with us, delving into more core secrets. Steve and Sam are now assistants to the Latvian law enforcement, helping them restore the dignity of the law. Everyone has new places to go, only we remain at our posts. The re-recruitment of Ghost agents…”

"She refused, sir." Agent Hill shook her head slightly, her expression unchanged. "She believes S.H.I.E.L.D. deceived her. We promised to heal her in the past, but we failed."

“No problem, we have enough time, enough manpower, and enough money now.” Nick Fury sat in the command seat and pressed a button. “Plan the route, we’re going to Switzerland. We need to get something out of our CIA informant, and also test how well the CIA agents’ counter-interrogation training is going.”

"Suppressive fire, Building B!" Camilla shouted into her communicator, "Cover Laura Crawford!"

"receive."

A storm of metal rained down on the buses used as cover by Trinity mercenaries. .0.75 caliber heavy explosive rounds salvaged from armored personnel carriers easily pierced the vehicles and the makeshift concrete walls, causing deadly shrapnel damage that tore the mercenaries hiding behind them to shreds. Laura Crawford took the lead, using her axe and pistol to break into the enemy sentries' lines of fire. This cover fire allowed her to escape. This anti-material fire was excessive for such a battle, but Camilla didn't care; she only wanted to eliminate these Trinity mercenaries as quickly as possible.

"Keep up, keep up!" The Kevlar body armor was utterly useless against the laser weapons; only the ceramic plates offered any slight protection. All the weapons and equipment in Latveria and the Immortal City had only one purpose: to combat heavily armored targets. Therefore, when Camilla and her squad switched to full-auto mode, the ruby-colored beam pierced through all obstacles in their path like an endless sword.

"Mortar, building D, that's the firing point."

"Roger that." The Martian technician accurately estimated the trajectory and fired a mortar shell. Through the low-altitude drone's camera, the Martian technician could overlook the entire area and fully grasp the tactical information. This information would be sent to Camilla and her squad members' tactical eyepieces. The Martian technician tapped a few times on the data panel, and figures in thermal imaging mode were marked, "10 o'clock, three people, rifles."

Without needing to aim, Camilla immediately turned around and fired several shots at the location obscured by the leaves.

"Killed."

"Remember to collect a biological tissue sample," the Mars technician reminded him. "I need it for testing."
