Chapter 1247 Mutant Creatures

Chapter 1247 Mutant Creatures (Second Update)

As the blood-red sunset was about to be swallowed by the gray-black forest horizon, the attack began. Like a heavy breath, dozens of vector engines, trailing bright exhaust flames and a deathly roar, crashed into the last stronghold held by the Trinity mercenaries and the Kukulkan Order.

The only M6 rearguard Bradley infantry fighting vehicle inside the Trinity stronghold didn't even have time to react before a Fire Knight wielding a chainsaw sword slammed into its roof, crushing the spine of the coaxial machine gunner who had poked his head out. The knight then used his chainsaw sword to cleave the barrel of the M242 Giant Viper 25mm autocannon; the collision between the high-speed chainsaw and the high-strength alloy created a shower of sparks. Latvian's superior materials science was evident in just a few seconds—the fallen barrel was the best proof.

The veteran sergeant fired several shots with his explosive pistol at the Sting anti-aircraft missiles mounted on the tank, then finally opened the tank's roof and threw in a plasma grenade from the grenade dispenser. His comrades were on guard, clearing out anyone who tried to interfere with their operation; one of them even opened the driver's hatch and fired a shot at the driver before closing the hatch and using the body to block the crew's escape route.

"Mission accomplished!" The veteran sergeant led his squad in a swift retreat, avoiding the shockwave from the ammunition detonation. A semi-transparent map projected onto the HUD screen by their helmet-mounted electronic eyes marked the squad's location with military symbols, as well as the position of their next target—information gathered from reconnaissance drones circling overhead. "Anti-aircraft fire destroyed!"

"HQ received."

The violent explosion instantly illuminated the entire battlefield, and the silent slaughter by the Fire Knights unfolded within the ruins.

Even when many Trinity mercenaries and Kukulkan followers reacted, their rifles were ineffective against the Infernal Knights. Even 7.62mm bullets could only graz the power armor harmlessly; only the .50 heavy machine guns could cause any friction. The Infernal Knights reacted swiftly; the machine gunners, spitting muzzle flash, were hit by accurate explosive rounds. Sometimes, terrifyingly accurate heavy grenades would fly in like mortars, the uncontrolled high-temperature plasma vaporizing both human bodies and steel.

In this operation, a ten-man tactical squad was broken up into five-man combat teams, each led by a squad sergeant and a squad adjutant. Since they were originally part of the same organization and had a high degree of informatization, the combat teams scattered at the two target points could even cooperate with each other to form crossfire.

The thick rocks that served as cover for the Trinity mercenaries and the Kukulkan Order followers were completely unable to stop the terrifying high-temperature torrents spewed by the fusion thermals, as well as the high-velocity, powerful shells of the heavy explosives. However, they were not without the ability to fight back. To defend against guerrilla attacks, they had equipped themselves with a large number of anti-tank missiles as a means of attack. After the initial panic, the Trinity Council guards, as the ultimate armed force, hid behind the rocks in the distance and launched a counterattack with anti-tank missiles on the path that the Fire Knights were bound to take, suppressing the genetically modified ones who rushed up the ancient stone steps behind the cover.

However, the tacit tactics, close coordination, superhuman thinking and reaction speed, and the individual tactical sharing network allowed the Infernal Knights to locate these threatening targets in a short time. Immediately afterwards, the knights' hovercraft and hoverjet motorcycles entered the fray, unleashing a barrage of bullets that swept past rapidly. Before the Trinity Council's guards, hiding high in the mountains, could even aim their Stinger anti-aircraft missiles at the Infernal Knights, they were struck down by the torrential rain of bullets.

The Fire Knights used ancient cavalry tactics to traverse the battlefield before turning and swooping down to provide fire support for the scattered knights. Meanwhile, whistling shells landed precisely on the low stone walls blocking infantry advance. Assault tanks and heavy armored vehicles, equipped with buckets, pushed aside the shattered rocks and drove into the plaza in the center of the ruins. The armored vehicles, equipped with 2-inch heavy explosive rapid-fire cannons and high-powered laser weapons, instantly unleashed a terrifying firepower advantage. The assault tanks, like ferocious beasts, charged towards the ground strongholds the knights couldn't attack, their massive cannons spewing death metal, blasting all resistance into pieces.

The golden eagle banner appeared from the gap in the stone wall and then moved rapidly toward the target location at the top of the mountain.

Hammurabi and Superuliumas, wielding massive golden square shields and intricately patterned silver greatswords, stood before the Emperor, stepping onto the battlefield as his protectors and vanguard. Constantine, Hannibal, and others, holding garrison spears, formed a loose guard around the Emperor, wielding their hastily issued heavy-duty pistols and weaving a dense web of deadly fire with astonishing power and accuracy.

Amon earned the honor of carrying the military standard. He followed closely behind the Emperor, his greatsword still gripped tightly even while he held the standard, ready to attack at any moment. This eagle standard had many functions, one of which was to connect with the Imperial Guard's powered armor information system, providing it with results ranging from life detection to psychic energy detection, and with an extremely wide coverage area. The Emperor's armor information system was also connected to this eagle standard. But even without using the radar on the standard, he could see the extremely strong psychic energy at the mountaintop using his second vision. That was his target, Dr. Pedro Domigus, Amaru of Paititi.

A dark ritual is taking shape, and he must stop it from happening.

As the Imperial Guard and the Emperor passed by, tactical squads spontaneously formed ranks and followed the eagle banner. Golden spearheads of attack instantly materialized on the battlefield. They followed the Emperor's footsteps, rushing up the stone steps to launch an attack on the mountaintop. The sounds of explosive gunfire and the shrieks of plasma filled the air. The continuous suppressive fire from armored vehicles and tanks reached its peak. The corpses of mortals rolled on the stone steps and were then trampled into mud by the genetically modified warriors. Only then did the Fire Knights let out their first roar of fury.

Hammurabi and Supiluliumus rammed open the heavy stone door, carved with serpentine creatures, with their shields, and eerie creatures from the darkness rushed out. They pointed their silver greatswords, crackling with electricity, into the darkness, their footsteps unstoppable, the explosive guns on the hilts firing in rapid succession, creating a series of shimmering metallic storms. The Emperor and four other guards followed, firing incessantly. By the long flashes of gunfire, they finally made out the creatures' appearance—though they possessed human limbs, their skin was covered in thick, bluish-green scales; two sharp fangs protruded from their lower lips; their emaciated limbs appeared even longer; sparse red and blue feathers grew from their armpits and heads; their once round human pupils had transformed into yellow snake eyes, which constricted sharply with each flash of gunfire.

"Flashbang!" Constantine shouted the order. "Search and destroy!"

The genetically modified warriors following closely behind fired and hurled flashbangs. Helmets filtered out the intense light and noise, and amidst the frequent flashes of light, one after another, these creatures that were once human fell. The scales covering their bodies were incredibly hard; even standard-caliber bomb guns required several shots to shatter them. Chainsaws and force fields struck their bodies, immediately creating faint sparks and flashes of blood. Without needing many commands, the knights spontaneously controlled and explored every passage in the dark cave, firing bombs one after another at any non-friendly targets emitting heat far below normal human body temperature—their tactical movements clean and efficient.

The Emperor strode towards one of the passageways. Aside from the knights on guard duty, the other combat personnel followed the Emperor and the Royal Guard into the most spacious room in the cave. It was an ancient, man-made ruin; a massive altar stood against the wall, and a circular sunstone was erected in the center of the room. The Royal Guards, having just entered, immediately realized that the slippery ground was not from rainwater falling through the skylight, but from the blood that covered the entire floor of the hall.

A human body lay on the black stone altar, and a figure wielding the Chakchak dagger was slicing open the sacrifice's chest to remove its heart. Then, the sacrifice, who should have been dead, suddenly sat up, scales spreading across its skin, and the massive wound began to heal unnaturally. Many such monsters filled the hall. Constantine fired a high-explosive bullet with his halberd, but the bullet vanished before Dr. Pedro Domiggs' eyes, as if pulling the trigger had been nothing more than an illusion.
