Chapter 1269 Doing a Good Job
Chapter 1269 Doing a Good Job (First Update)
On the way to the apprentices' quarters and training grounds, mystical masters kept stopping to pay their respects to the emperor.
The young sorcerers who participated in the Watum Temple Council returned to Kamar-Taj after completing their mission, recounting everything they had seen and heard to their companions. Although rumors had circulated for some time that the Sorcerer Supreme would split the titles and hand over the position of Lord of Kamar-Taj to the Emperor, it was only now that the sorcerers realized that this moment had finally arrived.
The massacre at Watum Temple deeply shocked all schools of magic on Earth, including Kamar-Taj. Even the interdimensional marketplaces and the Spellcasters' Alliance received this horrific news. Everyone realized that the future world would not be as forgiving as under the current Sorcerer Supreme. In the eyes of some spellcasters, the Emperor was leaving a trail of bloody footprints on this world, and the new ruler of Kamar-Taj would use blood and corpses to forge his own inviolable new order. Some spellcasters even believed that the Emperor's sword would one day fall upon their own heads, and for this reason, they were prepared to turn against Kamar-Taj.
Some, based on what they saw and heard at the knights and the Vatum council, linked the future ruler of Kamar-Taj with the ruler of Latvinia. However, due to the Sorcerer Supreme's protection of the Emperor's true name, magical schools were unable to delve deeper into the secrets. Nevertheless, this news revealed a great deal of information: not only did it indicate that Latvinia had Kamar-Taj's covert support, but it also suggested that Kamar-Taj would break the rules of seclusion and actively intervene in secular society. While it's unclear why the previous Sorcerer Supreme would send his disciples to establish a mortal kingdom, some believe this signifies Kamar-Taj's intention to change its stance and actively intervene in the secular world, managing all spellcasters through control of the entire Earth. The Vatum massacre was merely an action to demonstrate this attitude.
However, these matters were irrelevant to the apprentices. The magical world had no social media, and no one would tell the apprentices anything about the outside world. Before being allowed to leave headquarters, their only task was to study and train, honing their minds and bodies in this secluded place. This snow-capped mountain range allowed humans to experience the magnificence of nature and their own insignificance. The pristine sky almost revealed outer space, and whenever the mountains swallowed the sunlight, the brilliant Milky Way stretched across the night sky. That beauty was one of the Emperor's most profound childhood memories, and also a magnificent spectacle that cleansed the restlessness and unease of all the apprentices from the outside world.
"The constellation Ursa Minor was unusually bright recently, with multiple volcanic eruptions and frequent earthquakes—something I've never heard of before." Sherlock Holmes pointed to the Milky Way in the sky, with papers, pencils, a brass astrological chart, astrophysics books, tarot cards, and an optical telescope beside him. "Perhaps this is related to the recent departure of the high-ranking deacons of Kamar-Taj and the prisoners in the dungeons. Would you be willing to provide any clues?"
"I thought you couldn't remember information you didn't need." The Emperor waved his hand behind him, signaling Hammurabi and Amun not to follow. He pulled up a chair next to Sherlock Holmes and placed a small toolbox beside the telescope. "It's relevant, but you don't need to know."
"reason?"
"Because you're too smart." There aren't many arcane mages at the observatory. After all, astrology is a very complex subject, and many apprentices incorporate it into their other courses. In addition, all the apprentices are at different paces, and the temperature has recently plummeted. Apart from those specializing in astrology and celestial magic, there aren't many apprentices who will linger in this almost frozen place.
"Compared to Stephen Strange, your logical reasoning, abstract thinking, imagination, and curiosity all need to be limited. You must know where to apply your talents, otherwise you will eventually drive yourself crazy because of some details that cannot be explained by common sense. The outer dimension is not a place of rationality. I think Mordo told you that the magic we use is just using the energy of the outer dimension in a way that humans can understand, in order to achieve the purpose of manipulating reality."
"You can't control human curiosity," Sherlock Holmes said. "You're going to tell me about the prisoners next because you want to distract me from my curiosity and don't want to give a reason why we can't explore outer dimensions."
"I will satisfy your curiosity, because these are the same thing." The emperor skillfully opened his toolbox, picked up brushes, gears, ointments, and other tools, and neatly arranged them to the side. "They were tried because they misused extradimensional energy and caused harm as a result. They created cults and cult groups, manufactured addictive drugs, conducted illegal human experiments, and dangerously summoned spirits, among other things. Using magic to plunder wealth, bewitch mortals, and enjoy riches and lust may be the lightest of all crimes. You can compare the sentencing of those crimes I mentioned with the laws of the secular world."
"I understand, a legal system that conforms to social morality."
"You could say that a good society wouldn't teach ordinary people how to make RDX and methamphetamine, because curiosity leading them to explore such knowledge could very well cause trouble. From the perspective of outer dimensions, this is a definite outcome, regardless of whether they subjectively want it or not." The Emperor gestured for Sherlock Holmes to step back. "This telescope hasn't been repaired in over a hundred years, so I dare say that everything you see in the stars is wrong."
Why?
"Because of this." The Emperor reached out and unscrewed the eyepiece, forcefully pulling off the lens. With his movement, a long, pale pink, ileus-like creature was forcibly pulled out. Sherlock Holmes was horrified to discover that the flesh bore several deformed human eyes of varying sizes and several thin, throatless mouths filled with tiny teeth. Where the magnifying glass had been, a complete human eyeball was now stuffed in. In his terror, he even fell off his chair.
"When you observe the night sky, the information you receive is filtered through it. Only one star in the Ursa Minor constellation showed a change in brightness, not three." The Emperor gripped the writhing flesh like an earthworm, its deformed mouth emitting tiny screams. "In fact, the information you receive is all built within an information cocoon prepared for you by others, and you remain oblivious, confidently believing you are infallible. Do you still possess that confidence?"
"Excellent educational method." Sherlock Holmes raised his hand. "Get rid of this thing quickly."
"No, this is yours. Otherwise, why would I bring a toolbox?" The Emperor shrugged, tossing the slime-covered coelenterate next to him. "There are instructions in the toolbox. Remember to finish repairing it by tomorrow evening. You're not the only one here who needs to use the telescope. By the way, is Stephen Strange still in the apprentices' quarters?"
As the Emperor told Mordo, although he viewed Sherlock Holmes and Stephen Strange as tools, it didn't mean he didn't care whether the tools were useful or not. The former's talent far surpassed the latter's, but his weaknesses were equally obvious: his curiosity and inspiration were too high, and his obsessive pursuit of certain illogical details would drag him into the abyss of madness.
Compared to the still confident Sherlock Holmes, Stephen Strange was much more obedient—because he attempted to read grimoires that were off-limits to sorcerer apprentices, Mordo's surveillance and scrutiny of him were extremely strict, and the Emperor even found that the pain inflicted by the flogging was no less than that of his still crippled hands—he could no longer wear the Sling Ring until he proved that he had not been corrupted by knowledge, which was the most severe punishment for Stephen Strange, who was determined to heal himself.
