Chapter 1286 Moon Wolf Spear
Chapter 1286 Moon Wolf Spear (Second Update)
The topics of conversation at the dinner table often trouble many long-term cohabiting couples, as the familiarity that comes with prolonged interaction greatly diminishes the spark for conversation. However, this is not the case at Oxfordshire Manor. The Emperor and the witches can talk about the most mundane things and still manage to make each other laugh. When it comes to commenting on certain people and events, their tongues can also utter some rather wicked jokes. However, this time, Bayonetta and Joan of Arc have absolutely no intention of telling jokes; their inexplicable restraint comes from Rosa on the other side of the table.
It wasn't until mealtime that Rosa unveiled herself, changing out of the black silk, form-fitting monastic robes of the witch clan in her guest room and donning modern clothes she had bought in Miami. Milia turned to look at Rosa with some confusion, then at Bayonetta. Her little head couldn't understand why there were two witches who looked exactly alike; in her eyes, even the energy radiating from their souls was almost identical.
Compared to Bayonetta, Rosa appeared more elegant and composed. Although this was a facade, Rosa wouldn't readily display Bayonetta's childish competitiveness, nor would she refer to Bayonetta as her daughter or Joan of Arc as a junior, which greatly eased Joan's awkwardness. Just like with Bayonetta, Rosa's mother was also in a competitive relationship with Rosa. The witch from the Capetian dynasty and her successor, raised in the witch's territory, had clashed more than once over control of the witch clan.
"How much longer do those men want us to wait?" Rosa blinked, her eyes, almost identical to Bayonetta's, glancing at the Cheshire Cat who wobbled into the dining room. The silly cat knew lunchtime had arrived; it had just finished a whole fresh heart, and even with its belly bulging, the Cheshire Cat wasn't going to give up its share of tuna puree for the day. Whether it could eat it was one thing, whether it could actually fit it in its mouth was another, and the Cheshire Cat clearly valued the latter more. "Alright, let's start enjoying the delicious food," Rosa cheerfully beckoned the android forward. Bayonetta's makeup style was entirely derived from hers, equally adept at using deep purple and black eyeshadow, appearing mysterious and captivating. "I don't think there's a rule in this house that we have to wait for the master to eat, is there?"
"This isn't a palace; there aren't so many rules here," Bayonetta said. She received a nod from Diana, indicating that lunch could begin. Within a minute, the appetizers were served by androids dressed in long-skirted maid outfits. However, due to the family's excessive martial spirit, even the maids wore holsters at their waists, each containing a .0.50 caliber explosive pistol. Hidden in thigh holsters beneath their skirts were a laser pistol as a backup weapon and a single-molecule tactical dagger.
These android maids possess top-tier combat skills within the sorority and are personally trained and instructed by the witches. Based on the different fighting styles of Jeanne d'Arc and Bayonetta, the androids bear different markings such as lilies and roses, but they are all proficient in using the chainsaw sword, the most common weapon of the witch race. The secret mini-armor depots hidden throughout the manor are also prepared for them. If anyone were to invade the manor, they could rely on the terrain and a continuous supply of weaponry to fight their way out and await rescue. However, no one would be foolish enough to attempt to invade a manor that is essentially a military base; the automated weapon platforms scattered throughout are more than enough to repel any conventional forces that might infiltrate the manor.
"I almost wish this were the palace. After all, he's already king, and manipulating palace politics isn't easy," Rosa said meaningfully. "But I understand your and his decision; it's your business. I also saw anti-aircraft missile vehicles and main battle tanks on the estate. If Bader hadn't contacted you in time, those things might have opened fire on us… Don't get me wrong, I quite like his arrangements. At least it shows he's willing to pay a hefty security fee for you. Those things are worth at least a billion dollars, more than the entire estate, aren't they?"
"I didn't ask him to do that," Bayonetta said, feigning indifference. "It was his own choice."
"Oh my, the fact that you allowed him to do this is what surprises me the most. Your apartment in New York doesn't have this much security." Rosa happily picked up the glass of sparkling wine the artificial person had poured for her. It paired perfectly with the appetizer, showing how much thought the head maid had put into the menu. Rosa looked at Jeanne beside her, whose cheeks were flushed, and Bayonetta, who was clearly uncomfortable with her words. "It seems you really dote on him, willing to set aside your pride for him and adorn his armor with jewels. This is quite unusual among us witches. We usually shoot at the one we love, and only those who survive are considered qualified."
As the oldest witch present, Rosa secretly made a face at Milia, the youngest witch candidate, and then gestured for firing a gun. Milia looked up from her plate; she understood the gesture. She was far more familiar with firearms than Latin, thanks to the witch and emperor's upbringing. Allowing a child of this age to handle dangerous firearms was undoubtedly a crime, but for the witch and emperor, fighting was as commonplace as eating and drinking, and Milia's future would be the same.
“We’ve fired, and more than once,” Joan of Arc complained. “We failed when he was thirteen.”
"Not long ago, I saw a panting man running around in this manor."
"The Breathing Man" is now walking towards the restaurant with Baldr. Unlike the tense atmosphere that had arisen earlier due to the conflict over the Kamar-Taj operation, his conversation with Baldr is quite pleasant. Baldr was initially curious about the existence of the homunculus and the Royal Guard, but after learning that they were creations of two completely different alchemical processes, he slightly let go of the pride that came with standing at the pinnacle of power and began to humbly seek knowledge that he had missed over the years.
The emperor was always happy to satisfy any reasonable thirst for knowledge, especially to make this handsome old fellow bow his head.
However, the Emperor was still quite surprised by Baldr's speed of absorbing knowledge. Considering the Sages' theoretical research and practical application of psionic technology, and the fact that in another divergent timeline, the future Baldr's giant conglomerate, Izawell Corporation, developed various trap-based military products, it wasn't particularly surprising that Baldr, once the most powerful Sage in history, possessed the wisdom to learn modern theoretical physics and mathematics in an hour. Even so, Baldr still had much to learn before discussing the theories of anti-de Sitter space and information entropy, among other hotly debated issues in modern theoretical physics. He requested a pile of books and papers for his future research plans, and the Emperor even gifted him a pair of smart glasses as learning aids.
Having become somewhat more familiar with each other, Baldr began to inquire about how the Emperor had initially met Bayonetta. However, his pretext was to understand why the Kamar-Taj sorcerers were involved with the witch, rather than simply sending the sorcerers to kill the witch who had broken the rules. "In fact, I should have been the one to take action," the Emperor said. "Although I didn't, the witch's and the sage's legacy were taken away and organized by Kamar-Taj, so whether the witch is still alive is not a particularly important question."
Badr scrutinized the emperor for a long time before finally nodding.
"This is a divine artifact passed down from the Sage Clan. I will give it to you afterward." He conjured a detachable double-edged spear out of thin air. The Emperor had seen him wield this weapon before; flames and lightning coiled around its massive blade. As soon as Baldr Harbor produced the weapon, the protective magic set up in the laboratory began to crackle. It was actually a weapon combining two greatswords, but Baldr preferred to use it as a single unit. "But you must agree to my conditions. You and I must swear a blood oath; those who break it will be pierced through by this Moon Wolf Holy Spear."
