Chapter 1379 The Immortal
Chapter 1379 The Immortal (Part 1)
Why did the Kosovo Agreement cause such a huge uproar?
There are many reasons for this. Besides the fact that some countries use so-called superheroes as weapons, another reason is the so-called "Superhero Registration Act," which mandates that all masked vigilantes reveal their identities, impacting the lives of many. This reason can also be extended to a mysterious identity coveted worldwide—if the true identity of a monarch is a secret, then every capable nation in the world will attempt to find it. Especially since this monarch possesses technology and abilities surpassing most countries in the world, finding their true identity would be akin to winning a huge prize.
Nick Fury had signed a contract that, while preventing him from conveying the name to others through voice, words, or even gestures, also indirectly protected his right to know, allowing him to search and investigate based on fragments of past memories. He used his abilities to find some clues that led him to Oxfordshire, where he believed he might find the answer.
Diana had been notified in advance, and she led a standard combat squad of nine to wait on the street at the far end of the manor. She didn't know why her master had given the order to "bring the first non-manor member you see," but out of trust in their creator, she temporarily set aside her work in the kitchen and as housekeeper, and followed procedure to arm her sisters before waiting at the intersection in an armored vehicle. Although Britain doesn't have the same volatile "castle laws" as the United States, and Oxfordshire Manor is not far from Oxford University, security issues are rare, but that doesn't mean the manor should drop its security measures.
Leaving aside the disruptive tactics employed by the upper class, even before the rise of political correctness in Europe and America, some students sent by their fathers to Oxford University for a prestigious education, with their characteristic arrogance and foolishness, would always try to seek thrills by driving around the private estates of nearby manors during their breaks from studies. The sorority had more than once used ordinary firearms to drive away those noisy, speeding idiots, rather than throwing them into the Thames to rest alongside the street gangs kept by the upper class. This time, Diana drove out a Legislator tracked armored vehicle loaded with ammunition and fuel from the underground garage, believing that this vehicle and the sorority members inside could control the situation.
As she expected, the disheveled homeless man was powerless to resist. Although he was shocked by the sorority's appearance, he wisely surrendered when faced with heavy grenades and the muzzle of explosive guns. The car he had been hitchhiking behind him, sensing the danger, swerved nimbly, sped onto the nearby grass, and disappeared in a flash. It was clear the driver had been waiting in England's congested roads for a while, finally seizing the opportunity to floor the accelerator. Diana didn't bother the driver, but instead watched the homeless man being pointed at by five explosive guns.
"I didn't expect it to be you, Nick Fury."
"I didn't expect it to be you, cyborg. It's been so many years, you've become more and more human." The former King of Agents said somewhat dejectedly. "How did your masters know my route? I randomly picked rides and drivers to ensure no one could track my location. Did you implant a tracking device in me while I was in the Immortal City?"
"No homeless person in this world would create a homeless style by dressing head-to-toe in designer clothes. My Lord doesn't need to implant a tracking device in you to know your location, because He is a being beyond mortal imagination, and you have tried time and time again to challenge this human myth." Without hesitation, Diana took out handcuffs and cuffed Nick Fury. "Don't use nonsense to disguise your intentions. I know you look forward to meeting My Lord, but you will never be able to take the initiative in His presence."
"That's not necessarily true, girl. There are plenty of things you haven't seen." However, Nick Fury's assertiveness didn't last long; he found his target at a dock on the Thames. "Why did you want to find Enoch?" he asked impatiently. "What's your plan?"
The emperor did not answer the question.
He and Milia sat on small stools, fishing with rods of varying lengths, completely oblivious to the prisoners being escorted over by the Sisterhood behind them. Hammurabi, who had been guarding them, stepped aside to let Diana walk past him toward the Emperor. The first homunculus whispered something in the Emperor's ear, and then, except for one homunculus wielding a bomb pistol and a chainsaw sword, all the other Sisterhood members boarded armored vehicles and left the riverbank. The exhaust fumes and noise from the mechanical behemoths made Milia wrinkle her nose, complaining to her foster father that the ground tremors had caused the fish to flee.
"Let me ask you first, why did you come to Oxfordshire?" the Emperor said, looking at the ripples spreading from the armored vehicle's engine. "Don't try to obscure your true intentions; you know such tricks are useless against me."
"Every action leaves a trace." Nick Fury glanced sideways. "Aren't you going to let me sit down?"
"That's Milia's seat, not yours." The Emperor chuckled. "Tell me where my weakness lies, and maybe you can get a bush to sit on."
"Although you used magic to prevent anyone who knew of Salomon's identity in the past from associating the Balkan emperor with Salomon in any way, I haven't forgotten what you looked like in the past. A simple computer simulation is enough to determine your current appearance. Moreover, you're anything but discreet; you attended several meetings in the City of London, attempting to participate in the merger of Barings Asset Management as a shareholder of the Dutch ING Group." Nick Fury grinned, his words carrying a deeper meaning. "I know the identity of Salomon won't simply fade into obscurity; after all, it's the name you relied on to live an ordinary life. A distinguished graduate of Eton College and Oxford University—what identity could be more suitable for explaining your position as a director of the Dutch ING Group and MassMutual, and your connections at 10 Downing Street and the White House, to high society?"
"A mysterious nouveau riche in the City of London, huh? Indeed, that's a very intriguing identity. Even though the conference refused to allow reporters to speak, you could still find traces of my worldly identity. It's truly remarkable."
"Although I haven't yet untangled the complex web of shareholding entanglements, only uncovering the ownership relationships, I'm certain you didn't obtain these things through Salomon's identity, and that you intend to get involved in the upcoming election," Nick Fury said in a warning tone. "The stakes in the presidential election are far higher than you imagine, and you're bound to encounter resistance if you get involved. I'm warning you, Salomon."
"I'm just one of the forces manipulating the American Presidential University. Others will only be able to find out about a political donation I made through Vantone, nothing special." The Emperor shook his head. "You're as cunning as ever, Nick Fury. I can assure you you didn't come to the manor out of concern for me. You just want to confirm that I really live here, and then threaten me with my worldly life. If you don't tell the truth, I can't tell you why I need Enoch."
"You already know my purpose, why do I have to repeat it?" Nick Fury said. "Since you want to tell me about the immortals, why don't you just tell me directly?"
