Chapter 236 The Witch Goes to Battle
Chapter 236 The Witch Takes to Battle (Second Update)
Bayonetta didn't get any information from the question, because Jeanne, enraged by the inquiry, grabbed the cat and threw it at Salomon's face. However, the playful glint in Bayonetta's pale gray eyes seemed to reveal her true intentions; she knew something all along and asked the question simply to enjoy Jeanne's embarrassment. But when Salomon inquired, Bayonetta claimed it was a girl's secret and he had no right to know.
"Alright." Salomon shrugged, picked up the Cheshire Cat who was whimpering pitifully, and left, followed by Bayonetta's series of laughs. He knew all too well the capriciousness of witches; if he didn't leave soon, Joan of Arc would shoot.
The search for Mephisto's son has been incredibly long, as has the search for Ghost Rider. Neither Kamar-Taj nor S.H.I.E.L.D. has made significant progress. No one knows where Ghost Rider is hiding; neither the Cosmic Cauldron nor the cameras have detected him. Even though everyone knows Johnny Blaze cannot control his killing urges at night, no one has been able to spot a burning skull roaming aimlessly after dark.
The sorcerers did not rule out the possibility that someone might help Johnny Blaze, a thought that only made Kamar-Taj more nervous, because the only person who would help Ghost Rider was Morpheus, and no one knew what this cunning devil was planning.
Salomon used his connections at S.H.I.E.L.D. to contact Johnny Blaze's girlfriend, Rose, the stunning woman with light brown skin who was still a TV presenter. However, she said that before Salomon came to her, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents had repeatedly questioned her, and she genuinely didn't know where Johnny had gone, nor had her boyfriend, who had once again disappeared without a word, left any contact information.
Rose was extremely angry during the questioning, and the arcane mage felt that even if Ghost Rider suddenly appeared in front of her, she might still get a few punches.
This lead went cold, and Salomon pinned his hopes on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s facial recognition system working properly. After all, Johnny Blaze's immortality belonged to Ghost Rider, and as the human who embodied Ghost Rider, he still needed to eat. While he wouldn't starve to death without food, he would be tormented by hunger. The arcane mage believed Johnny Blaze might not be able to withstand the combined agony of Ghost Rider and hunger, so he could only hope that the supermarket Johnny Blaze frequented had security cameras.
Months passed, his A-Level course selections were complete, and Kamar-Taj and S.H.I.E.L.D. still hadn't heard a word about Ghost Rider. As for the Demonborn, that was even more of a stretch; the Demonborn was just an ordinary person now, and even the Cosmic Cauldron couldn't possibly screen everyone among the seven billion people worldwide. Salomon felt that if he hadn't slowed down his academic progress, and hadn't gone to university, or even graduated, that damned Demonborn and Johnny Blaze might still be hiding somewhere unknown.
This highlights Kamar-Taj's weakness in secular power. Salomon believes that S.H.I.E.L.D. might not be taking this matter seriously and is merely going through the motions. Therefore, he is even more eager to build secular power for Kamar-Taj. However, he cannot recruit many agents before S.H.I.E.L.D. collapses, so he can only wait patiently and extend an olive branch at the right time.
Salomon's job was combat, not reconnaissance, so it wasn't his turn to work yet. He took advantage of a week's break during the fall semester to vacation with Jeanne, Bayonetta, and the homunculi in a small cabin in the Nordic countryside. Autumn and winter were the perfect time for salmon, and in addition, the various mushrooms in the rural forests were ready for picking. Salomon had made plans with his neighbors the previous year to pick chanterelles and smoke fish, and this year he had a whole week to accomplish that.
The pot lid was lifted, the foam skimmed off, and the sorcerer used a free-range rooster from his neighbor's farm and chanterelle mushrooms to make a soup. The soup was delicious, and he and the witches huddled together on the blue fabric sofa they'd bought from Italy, by the roaring fire, enjoying this delicacy together. Besides this, there were also delicious smoked mackerel balls. It had been a year since he and the witches had last tasted them; the smoked mackerel balls and cheese sauce bought at the supermarket could never compare to the ones from the countryside—this was the authoritative assessment of the famous fish ball connoisseur, Cheshire Cat, a comment worthy of a gourmet magazine.
The witches wholeheartedly agreed with the Cheshire Cat's opinion, and then took its fish balls and ate them too.
"Woo-woo~" Salomon stroked the round head of his magical pet with a helpless expression, stuffing a piece of his smoked salmon into the aggrieved cat's mouth. Since returning to the Nordic countryside, the witches' appetites have become astonishing, as if the approaching winter is their excuse to indulge in delicious food—witches don't need to worry about their weight at all, as any amount of food will be refined into magic.
"You seem distracted, Boya. Is something troubling you?" Bayonetta forked a piece of pan-fried red snapper and stuffed it into Salomon's mouth. The sorcerer bit into the fish and shifted his gaze from his phone on the sofa to the witch. He had been waiting for the call, which was the purpose of his vacation—because all troubles seemed to arise when he was enjoying life, and he figured this time might be no exception.
"It's nothing," Salomon replied. "I'm just a little unsettled. The winter solstice is approaching, and all sorts of dark magic creatures on Earth will be active again. After my birthday this year, I'll be joining the annual search party organized by Kamar-Taj."
"That's no problem for you, is it? That's not what you're thinking." Bayonetta pointed to Salomon's current attire. The red shroud and black occult robes seemed a bit thin in the approaching winter of Northern Europe, but Salomon insisted on wearing them. His little scheme had long been seen through by the witch.
"Alright." The arcane mage fed his half-eaten fish ball to his magical pet. The cat was getting lazier and lazier, even eating while lying on its back, too lazy to move its limbs. He stroked the cat's round belly as he spoke, "Remember what I told you about the Sons of Mephisto? I've always found it strange because they hid so well that even the Cosmic Cauldron couldn't find them—so I think someone is helping them. On one hand, there's the Sons of Mephisto, and on the other hand, it's the winter solstice, the active period for dark magic creatures. I'm worried that these two things combined will cause some changes that no one wants to see. Thanks to Kamar-Taj's extermination efforts, there aren't many dark magic creatures left on Earth, but they're not completely extinct. Even if the old devil's incarnation didn't usurp the bodies of the demonic offspring, those dark magic creatures might still offer their souls to the devil in an attempt to fight against Kamar-Taj. In other words, many big things might happen this winter solstice, and I might be incredibly busy."
"It sounds like you need help," Joan of Arc glanced sideways at the sorcerer. "You can just ask, Ceressa and I won't refuse you. Remember, you're the least likely to fight in this house."
"Meow!" The Cheshire Cat didn't forget to chime in even while eating, which made Salomon so angry that he smacked it on the head.
"Shut up, you stupid cat, you're the worst one in this house." The arcane mage took the huge grilled deep-sea scallop from the android and handed it to Bayonetta and Jeanne. This kind of shellfish can be put back into its shell after being grilled and kept warm on charcoal fire without any seasoning. It is an extremely rare delicacy.
He made the android sit down and taste the food. Although Dina was a construct, a part of her flesh and blood was made up of his life force. The android also had a sense of taste. Although it could not obtain energy by eating, it was not difficult for it to digest a little food.
"Alright." Salomon winked. "This time, it's our family's turn to step in."
