Chapter 251 Mech Wars
Chapter 251 Mech Battle (Second Update!)
Father Morru would occasionally stroll past Salomon with a smug expression, even though they were currently in the crowded cargo hold of the transport plane. Father Morru preferred to go without a seatbelt just to show off his work to the sorcerer. His work was sitting right next to Salomon—Johnny Blaze's expression had calmed considerably after Father Morru's purification, but his worries had not diminished in the slightest.
Even after the Spirit of Vengeance subsided, Salomon's words lingered in Johnny Blaze's mind. His pronouncements about fate made him realize that the Spirit of Vengeance was his only hope. Fortunately, the Spirit of Vengeance didn't disappear; it was merely suppressed. Johnny Blaze cherished this moment of peace, even if only for a short while. He hadn't had a proper rest in a long time, and he didn't care what Salomon was up to!
The cargo hold of the Airbus had been converted into a temporary ward for the wounded. Father Moru wandered among the wounded until he reached a stretcher and looked as if he were about to perform a last rite. He was then ushered out by the medical staff (the same extremely irritable doctor) – the lights overhead were not heavenly light, and the priest was asked not to take the delirious ramblings of the heavily sedated wounded seriously; they did not need a last rite, and their lives were not in danger.
"Ha!" Salomon promptly let out a mocking laugh at Father Moru, earning only a glare in return. The sorcerer wasn't angry; he unbuckled his seatbelt and went up to the upper deck via the cargo hold's spiral staircase. Because of Father Moru's excessive consumption of alcohol, Nick Fury had already cleared all the drinks from the bar. Salomon was only there to find something to eat; he had missed two meals and desperately needed to replenish his energy.
The evacuation went smoothly. Under the cover of Captain Rogers and the arriving F-22 escort fighters, S.H.I.E.L.D. suffered no additional casualties. Now, the Airbus is carrying agents, monks, and two other important targets to a secret base. Agent Melinda May has already told Nick Fury the truth about the purification ritual, and the other agents also know about it (it's not classified). Under pressure from Captain Rogers, Nick Fury has abandoned the purification ritual. He plans to lock Danny, the boy, in the military base's underground fortifications to ensure the devil will emerge under such pressure.
However, the reason why those mercenaries suddenly appeared near the monastery is still unknown, and placing them in the underground fortifications is not absolutely safe. Therefore, the boy still needs Salomon's protection to avoid a surprise attack from supernatural forces.
The upper deck was much less crowded than the cargo hold. After collecting his dinner, Salomon found a window seat and watched the airbus chase the sun westward above the clouds. He saw the sunlight ahead dyeing the thick clouds orange-red and gray-purple, some of the thicker clouds even flashing with lightning and rumbling thunder as the airbus passed. The terminator seemed to move faster than the plane. Salomon watched the veil of night slowly creep over the wings, gradually swallowing the airborne transport plane. Just as this light gray veil completely enveloped the airbus, the sorcerer finished his meal, as Agent Romanov was already sitting beside him, seemingly about to disturb him.
"Don't you need to fly the plane?"
"Agent May is enough."
"Then why did you come to find me?"
"About that boy," she said, "what are you going to do with him?"
"Tsk." The sorcerer shook his head. "I don't know either. Let nature take its course. If the Venerable One gives the order, then we'll follow his instructions."
"What are your own thoughts?" Natasha asked. "Your teacher isn't here, and neither are your fellow students. You have the authority to make decisions on the spot."
"Why are you so concerned about this boy?" Salomon glanced at the female agent, but found no expression on her face. "What do you want, Natasha?" the sorcerer asked. "Do you need this boy to live to fill the void in your heart? The best outcome for this boy is to live under Kamar-Taj's surveillance. He can't join Kamar-Taj; he'll be tortured to death by external magic. And because of the power hidden in his bloodline… we can only hope that power will never be unearthed."
"I need to give that mother an explanation, Salomon. Don't be so heartless." Agent Romanov said somewhat helplessly. "I understand how she feels. She's currently traveling around with a group of strangers and people she doesn't trust, searching for a way to rescue her child. I can imagine her helplessness and fear. Try to understand her feelings; what she needs is peace of mind."
The sorcerer nodded, agreeing with Natasha's statement. He indeed didn't mind providing more humanitarian care to the parties involved, provided that Nadja and her child were willing to undergo lifelong surveillance. Salomon wouldn't hesitate to do his best to save the child's life. But just as he was about to speak, two loud explosions interrupted his words, followed by a violent jolt of the airbus. He saw several small black dots hovering near the wings in the deepening night, one of them even gripping the wing, while the two escorting F-22 fighter jets had long since disappeared.
Those were definitely not birds that interfered with flight!
Romanov's agents also discovered this problem. Aircraft radar can detect birds, but under normal circumstances, birds only appear in front of the aircraft rather than behind it. Therefore, most of the time, no one pays attention to those small reflected signals from behind (drones are larger than birds), and sometimes those signals are even actively filtered out.
So these Mach 0.9 birds caught up with the plane from behind.
"What is that?" Agent Romanov asked.
"Some kind of flying monster." Due to the poor lighting, Salomon couldn't make out the shapes of the creatures, but he already had a general idea of their combat capabilities. They were already tearing apart the metal plates on the plane's wings. He even saw a dark shape carelessly burned to ashes by the jet engine's exhaust. At the same time, sparks were constantly erupting from the fuselage, and alarms were blaring throughout the plane. Nick Fury also rushed out of his office. Under the command of Agent Romanov and the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., all the agents remained at their posts. The Airbus had activated its defense system, and two machine guns rose from near the wings, firing continuously backward.
However, this didn't help much; after discovering this, the monsters stopped flying higher than the plane. SHIELD still needed to make an emergency landing because the monsters kept pouring out of the clouds. By chance, a flash of lightning revealed a dense mass of tiny black dots rushing towards them from behind the plane.
The plane accelerated again, but it couldn't shake off the monsters. Salomon walked towards the junction between the Airbus and the Quinjet. After receiving a signal, Agent Romanov opened the hatch, allowing the arcane mage to step out. The roaring wind from behind whipped his shroud robes, and the biting cold constantly stripped the arcane mage of his body heat. However, the arcane mage was not unprepared—Spiderwalking allowed Salomon and the android to walk on the surface of the plane without being blown off by the wind, his powerful respiratory system helped him to absorb as much oxygen as possible in the thin air, his steady and powerful heart provided oxygen for Salomon in the extreme environment, and environmental endurance spells allowed him to withstand the low temperature, preventing his blood from constricting and affecting his combat ability.
As soon as Salomon and the android stepped out of the hatch, they encountered a monster clinging to the metal plates on the fuselage. This monster had wrinkled skin and protruding fangs on its face, and its sharp, long claws on its hands were particularly striking. In particular, its enormous bat wings clearly identified it as a monster.
When Salomon encountered it, the monster immediately let out a piercing howl, and after the howl ended, it pounced on Salomon without hesitation. The homunculus strode forward, blocking the arcane mage's path, and swung her weapon, cleaving the attacking monster in two; the greatsword left a long gash on the metal plate. "Master, what kind of monster is this?" the homunculus asked. "The encyclopedia you provided doesn't specify its category."
"I'm not sure either, but it looks like a vampire." Salomon frowned and shouted. He felt things were getting more and more serious; he had never encountered these vampire monsters before. Actually, this was quite normal. Although most vampires in this world were of Dracula's bloodline, the source of their power was not Dracula, but Lilith (emphasis added). Therefore, there were many other derivative vampire monsters, but most of them were hiding very well.
After the monster howled, more monsters surged out from the clouds and beneath the fuselage, accompanied by a chaotic chorus of screams, like a huge, noisy swarm of bats. The Airbus's machine guns roared, but they still couldn't completely eliminate the monsters.
Salomon and the homunculus were immediately engaged in a fierce battle. There were simply too many of these monsters, and they all pounced on the arcane mage. At first, Salomon could still use his magic to shape things with his magic flames and use the Vishanti's magic to inflict massive damage on these monsters, and for a moment, orange-red sparks flashed everywhere. But soon he had no time to chant spells and could only draw the leaf-shaped longsword from his waist to fight back.
The hatch opened again, and Captain Rogers, with a cable tied around his waist, stepped out against the strong wind, shield and pistol in hand. The arcane mage brandished his longsword, and a massive, blood-red blade appeared out of thin air, severing the legs of a vampire monster lunging at Captain Rogers. Recovering in time, Captain Rogers pressed his shield against the monster's chest and shoved his pistol into its mouth, firing several shots.
"I thought you weren't coming," Salomon said to Captain Rogers, who was running over.
"Of course I'll come. Besides, I've encountered this kind of monster before, in Germany."
