Chapter 269 Lord of Lies
Chapter 269 The Lord of Lies (Second Update)
After resolving the matter, Salomon also patrolled the area around the orphanage to make sure all the surveillance personnel had left. Only then did he cast a spell around the orphanage to ensure no unauthorized personnel could sneak in. This spellcasting continued into the evening, until little Lorna called, at which point Salomon stopped what he was doing.
When Salomon answered the phone, he was a little worried that something had happened to her, but after the child started chattering away, first with aggrieved feelings and then with anger, the sorcerer finally put aside his fatherly worries. The child had only been robbed; she hadn't even fired a shot.
Salomon could only patiently comfort her, promising to give her another seven hundred dollars while instructing her to definitely use her gun next time—it was a sacred right granted to citizens by American law to protect their property. As for the unregistered gun and the possibility of Lorna's superpowers being witnessed, Salomon naturally didn't care. The world was becoming increasingly chaotic; Lorna's safety was more important, and he could handle the rest.
If you encounter a pedophile, shoot them without hesitation, even if they are the President of the United States. This was Salomon's specific instruction.
Don't even think about getting into trouble with the NYPD! Salomon was chased by them once before for driving without a license. Luckily, he ran fast, picked up his motorcycle, and escaped. Otherwise, Nick Fury would have had to bail him out.
That would be embarrassing.
The arcane mage checked the time and prepared to leave. He walked into a small alley near the orphanage, intending to open a portal back to his residence. He never used the orphanage to cast spells to leave, to avoid arousing suspicion if someone was observing him. Therefore, he always sought out secluded corners to teleport. Fortunately, there weren't many residents around the orphanage, so Salomon wasn't worried about being seen.
However, he stopped halfway through the spell—he heard a series of vicious breaths and smelled the stench of dark magic permeating the air. Salomon froze, clenching his fist in the spellcasting gesture. Accompanied by a series of light footsteps, a dark figure crashed out of the glass window above Salomon. The arcane mage immediately raised his right hand, using his orange-red shield to deflect the rain of shards of glass and the claw strike. The attack was so sudden that he didn't even have time to see the attacker's face, but whoever it was, launching an attack so close to the orphanage, Salomon was enraged. He had already sentenced the culprit in his mind.
death penalty.
"Three-headed Satan greets you." The black figure laughed as it fell from the sky, then leaped towards the sorcerer again. The heavy breathing trapped in its throat made Salomon hear the blood dripping from its white fangs, and the sharp tearing sound of claws ripping through skin.
This time, Salomon had time to react. Less than a meter from the dark magic creature, just as its filthy claws were about to tear his skin, he vanished into a thin silver mist. The next instant, he reappeared abruptly behind the creature, slamming the orange-red Ring of Raghadore into its back with all his might. The sorcerer didn't waste time; the moment he landed, he charged forward again, pinning down the creature's limbs and smashing its cursed, enhanced joints with his heel. He grabbed the deformed head and, filled with rage, slammed it against the ground until thick, foul-smelling blood pooled on the concrete, rendering the werewolf utterly helpless.
"Did Marduk send you?" the sorcerer asked gruffly. The name "Three-Headed Satan" specifically referred to Marduk, the most disliked demon in Hell, because he was fond of calling himself Satan and had three heads of a poisonous dragon; even Mephisto disliked this madman. Salomon didn't know why Marduk's minions had attacked him, nor did he know how these dark magic creatures knew his location.
The werewolf's eyes were blinded by blood and could no longer be opened, but it seemed utterly unconcerned about what lay ahead. It coughed up a mouthful of blood and revealed a grotesque smile. "The great three-headed Satan knows your secrets, arcane mage," he said. "Your conspiracy with the Lord of Lies cannot escape his notice."
Lord of Lies, another name for Mephisto.
Kamar-Taj and Mephisto's plan? Salomon was reminded of the pact the old deacon had signed on behalf of the Sorcerer Supreme with Mephisto back in Hell. He didn't know the contents of the pact, nor what the agreement between the Sorcerer Supreme and Mephisto was, but he was certain that the pact was related to Marduk, and that the information in the pact terrified Marduk greatly.
He had initially thought the matter was over, since the threat of the Holy Lance's pilgrimage was not something every hell lord could withstand. But now it seemed that Mephisto had indeed been unable to suppress his true nature, betraying his temporary partner not long after the contract was signed. The Devil of Denial had used this incident to persuade Marduk, an impulsive madman, and even Salomon might have been used as a bargaining chip by Mephisto.
Salomon smashed the werewolf a few more times, and seeing that it couldn't say anything more, he decisively slit its throat with the short knife he carried. Then, as if sensing something, he immediately stood up and, without even cleaning up the werewolf's corpse, ran desperately towards the orphanage.
He ran faster and faster, leaping over trash cans, bounding over obstacles, until finally he even broke through brick walls and concrete floors, his once neatly pressed shirt unbuttoned. He ran forward furiously, as agile as a wildcat. His muscles, brimming with power, unleashed his rage on a figure about to sneak into the orphanage.
Salomon leaped from mid-air, his sparkling fist slamming into the dark magic creature's head. With a crisp strike and the crack of shattering skull, the immense force of the impact forced its head into its chest cavity. It died instantly, without uttering a sound. A cloud of blood exploded in front of the sorcerer's chest, splattering blood like rain onto the orphanage's white-tiled exterior walls. The sorcerer didn't linger; he didn't even heed the gasps of passersby.
Salomon started running again, heading towards the next location indicated by the magical alert.
"Your Excellency." Salomon entered the Supreme Master's meditation room, panting. His white shirt was covered with mottled bloodstains of dark brown and deep red, and pale pink bloodstains dripped slowly from his forehead along with sweat, making him look as if he had rolled around in a bathtub.
Salomon's rage was uncontrollable. He brutally quelled an attack by dark magic creatures, his leaf-shaped dagger drinking in the grandest blood frenzy of its life, slitting more than ten throats with it—these dark magic creatures were diverse, with werewolves and vampires being the most common, but many more were cultists with the blood of infernal beings. These were ugly creatures (some even being infernal beasts) born from the intercourse of summoned lower-dimensional beings through blood sacrifices.
It was an extremely disgusting sight. Female cult members, who served as mothers, had a very low chance of survival after the ritual. Some of the more violent mixed-race children would even tear open their mothers' wombs and crawl out on their own.
In his rage, he didn't even bother with the corpse of the dark magic creature. However, Salomon remained rational and promptly notified the sorcerers at Kamar-Taj, who removed the creature's body before the NYPD arrived. As for the bloodstains, Kamar-Taj couldn't do anything about them. Salomon planned to contact Nick Fury later to resolve the matter; otherwise, he would have to go to the NYPD's archives or a biometrics agency to manually delete the records.
Salomon returned to Kamar-Taj to inform the Sorcerer Supreme about Mephisto's betrayal, but the Sorcerer Supreme seemed to have known about it all along.
"Cooperating with Mephisto will inevitably lead to betrayal, is that anything to be surprised about?" the Venerable One said calmly. "However, we have already obtained what we need, and I don't care what Mephisto does afterward. On the contrary, we have grasped Marduk's lifeline. This mad demon's attack on you shows that He is afraid; He is afraid that Kamar-Taj will touch His sore spot. I know what you are worried about, but it's alright. I informed Athena long before the attack, and she will take care of those children. Do you really think anyone can defeat her?"
"Furthermore," the Venerable One slowly poured Salomon a cup of tea, letting him moisten his parched throat, "Athena didn't blame you. On the contrary, she thinks you did a very good job."
