Chapter 283 The Devil's Daughter
Chapter 283 The Devil's Daughter (Second Update)
"Moru, do me a favor. Check if the Vatican has sent any clergy to Portland recently. You mean, the kind who perform exorcisms." Salomon looked through the rain at the blurry images outside the car window. The rain refracted the light, blurring the lines of everything, even the warm light emanating from the shops. But this didn't stop the sorcerer from seeing the person on the other side of the rain, because he wasn't using his own eyes, but magic.
However, his spellcasting seemed to have alerted the other party.
"Yes? Help me find out her name. She's a woman, with long dark hair, and quite cute, but her expression is a bit serious." After hanging up the phone, the sorcerer casually picked up the donut in front of him and opened his left eye, which had been closed. Food cools down quickly when it rains, and just as Salomon was about to recite the incantation to heat up the donut, he remembered the subject's sensitivity to magic.
He muttered a curse under his breath, then took a bite of the cold bread ring.
"How long are we supposed to wait here?" Dave muttered under his breath. Ever since Salomon made him drive his beat-up old car through the portal, Dave's frustration had been building. "I have classes!" he grumbled, his voice rising as if he'd been provoked. "And I have a girlfriend! Do you want me to call her and tell her I'm coming to San Francisco for a business trip after class?"
Betty will understand.
Where is your girlfriend?
"I went on a business trip to hunt angels. There are quite a few angels this time." The sorcerer didn't turn around, but continued to observe the blurry figure across the street. The rain eventually caused some interference; he could only make out the person's general movements and couldn't discern what the target and the clergy were saying through lip reading.
"You haven't told me anything about what we're looking for!" Dave said. "You should have told me. I don't like being kept in the dark."
"Don't you know?" Salomon turned his head and looked at Dave in surprise. He hadn't expected that Balthazar hadn't told his disciple such an important matter.
"I don't know! I'm studying hard in environmental science..."
"Then do you know about the three-headed poison dragon Marduk, and that Marduk wanted to kill me?"
"Satan! I know, Balthazar told me about him."
"Very good." The arcane mage shifted his gaze back. "We're looking at Marduk's offspring. But I can't get specific information about them right now; S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't treating me well. All I know is that Marduk's offspring suffered misfortune in their childhood—it was something very, very bad. Their father seems to have been possessed by a demon, and Damon—that is, Marduk's offspring—has an inverted pentagram scar on his chest. Although the scar is incomplete, Marduk also has an inverted pentagram mark on his chest."
"Oh!" Dave exclaimed in surprise, then fell silent.
"Possession is the only way for beings from lower planes to influence the material plane after the planetary defense system was established, because it's almost impossible to catch them. Kamar-Taj can't identify who's possessed through the planetary defense system; we can only know where the etheric plane was shaken, where magic was cast, but we can't know who cast the spell," Salomon said. "I'm not making excuses for Kamar-Taj's poor performance; it's just a fact. Unless we have face-to-face contact, we can't know whose body the demon is in."
"Then how do you know that person is a descendant of Satan?"
"There are photos, there are addresses, it's all in the information Mephisto provided, but there's no record of going there. Truly the devil, He knows exactly what I want to do. Let's drive, that concludes today's observation."
"It's over?" Dave was overjoyed, but then he realized something was wrong. "Shouldn't you have gotten out of the car and arrested him? Isn't that how you usually do things? You were even wearing your robes! I remember another demon was under your close surveillance."
"There are two." Salomon shattered Dave's fantasy. "I think this demon might be interested in killing his own father, but I'm not sure yet because they're too weak right now. If they are, then I'll send him to hell, literally... Let's go, Dave, we need to change targets. Dave's been targeted. He has a sister, and our mission is only halfway through."
"Two demons, looks like you're in big trouble." Dave muttered as he started his rattling used car and drove away from the parking space.
Salomon was extremely worried because this secondhand car, worth only $200, could fall apart at any moment, and it was probably older than him and Dave combined. Fortunately, the car managed to reach the portal Salomon had opened in the alley.
"Hey, you still haven't told me where our next destination is!"
"San Francisco. Also, remember to change your car after you go through the portal. I want a Bugatti Veyron. Drive aggressively; you're white, no one will bother you in a big city."
"Anna Helstrom," Salomon called out to the tall, short-haired woman who was about to enter the hotel. She was about the same height as Salomon, but slightly shorter than Bayonetta, so Salomon didn't feel any pressure facing her. The woman seemed quite displeased with Salomon's presence; she narrowed her eyes, carefully scrutinizing the mystic in the robes of the Holy Relic—she vaguely sensed a threat emanating from those garments.
"Talk about it? It's about your father."
A father kidnapping his daughter! That was the only impression her father left on the world, and Anna would never forget the despair she felt sitting in the car. For so many years, only her brother had continued to pursue the past. Now, Salomon's sudden appearance brought those memories back. Anna Helstrom reluctantly agreed to Salomon's proposal, and they stood facing each other on the sidewalk.
"It seems your family relationships aren't very harmonious, Satana," the arcane mage addressed her by her future name. Although Anna Helstrom's powers hadn't fully awakened, Salomon had sensed that she was intentionally using them while observing her in the car.
"I am not Satana, who are you?" Anna Helstrom did not understand the sorcerer's meaning.
"Your blood carries magic, but you haven't fully awakened your power yet. You cannot fight your father." The sorcerer pointed to himself. "I need you, Anna Helstrom, or rather, Satana. I am your father's mortal enemy—not your earthly father, but the father of your soul, the mortal enemy of the thing possessing your biological father. Simply put, I need to train you. When I descend to hell to fight your father, I will need your help."
"How can I be sure I can trust someone who suddenly appears spouting nonsense?" Anna Helstrom said with a sneer. "I'm leaving. Don't follow me, or you'll learn what I'm capable of."
After turning around and taking a few steps, she realized that she seemed to be standing still. The scenery around her hadn't changed at all, yet she was actually moving forward. She looked down in surprise and found that the concrete bricks under her feet were slowly moving backward like a treadmill conveyor belt, and the destination of the movement was the guy in the red shirt.
"Be patient. The reason I haven't gone to find your brother is because there are unknown people around him, and I can't be sure if he's being targeted." Anna Helstrom angrily reached out her hand to him, but Salomon extended his slingshot-encrusted finger and easily neutralized the crude spell.
“You see,” he said, “you don’t know how to use your power at all. You just want to do it, so you reach out and let magic do what you need to do. But you can do more than that, Satana. I know your hatred, I know you want to kill that person. I can help you, we can help each other.”
