Chapter 464 Everyone is Busy (First Update)
Everyone who knows Salomon knows he likes planning and likes things to go according to plan.
To achieve this goal, this somewhat obsessive-compulsive sorcerer always made numerous plans, striving to have a corresponding countermeasure whenever the event took a different turn. Even Wanda, who hadn't known him for long, could sense this.
As she lay on the hard metal bed in her bulletproof glass cell, her most vivid memories were of Salomon's raven-black eyes. Those moist, complex eyes held a multitude of schemes, which, along with the rust on the bed frame, exuded a cold, metallic feel. Wanda Maximov felt she couldn't fathom his thoughts; this unease, like an abyss within her, dragged her downwards, leaving her terrified of her bold actions that day.
She felt she had been too reckless, and that person had been too easy to talk to.
After repeatedly processing the events of the day, she realized with alarm that she might have fallen into another trap, one that was perhaps even more terrifying and unpredictable than the organization entrenched in the castle.
Was my reaction within his expectations? Who exactly is the girl he brought? What is her role? What was the truth in what he said? What exactly is this so-called "multiverse"? Is that girl really my sister in a parallel universe?
Magic! she thought to herself.
Why does he know so much about my abilities, my magic, and my life? Do his many titles hold the secret to all of this? What aspects of the knowledge he teaches could have dire consequences? What exactly is the price he speaks of for magic, and what price must I pay? How will I pay it?
Like Wanda Maximoff, Pietro also fell asleep with apprehension about the future; today's little adventure had been far too exhausting for them. Neither the food they had obtained through sheer "luck" while wandering the streets nor the regular meals provided by Hydra could offer them much nutrition for their growth and development; they desperately needed sleep.
On the other side of the world, Salomon is still engrossed in the piles of parchment scrolls.
The spells recorded on these parchment scrolls were extremely powerful and expensive, so even Salomon had to treat them with caution, carefully copying them into his spellbook and adding his own analysis and conclusions. Like completing a thesis, each spell scroll was a test of the spellcaster's abilities, a test Salomon had undergone countless times.
Some might envy the spellcaster's power, but the intensity of magical learning far exceeds three years of high school. While copying the scrolls, Salomon also needed to consult previously learned astrological charts to understand the magic depicted. He was still young, energetic, and capable of staying up all night; it was always good to learn as much as possible while he was young.
Moreover, he has been having less and less time to study lately. The affairs of Morton Academy and the Immortal City have squeezed his schedule. Dina and Stephanie have to calculate every second precisely, and then fight tooth and nail over what Salomon should do with his free time.
The Wakandans made daily progress in the technology they invented based on the portion of the Brotherhood of the Shield technology he shared. Documents on the new Sorority's live-fire shooting results, swordsmanship training, hand-to-hand combat training performance, science education achievements, basic magic knowledge test scores, and even menstrual cycles were submitted to the office by Tita.
Out of a sense of responsibility, Salomon read it at least once and gave his approval.
The Asgardian disintegration field prototype that Tony Stark possesses needs to be sent to Wakanda for further analysis, and for miniaturization and integration attempts. In return for Salomon's sharing of technology, the Wakanda will also contribute their electromagnetic barrier technology and invest manpower in research, attempting to integrate it into individual soldier equipment. One hundred sets of golden armor made of Uru metal are still undergoing continuous refinement, and the life support and protection systems, which are composed of electronically synthesized muscles, servo tendons, biochemical dialysis devices, highly effective analgesics, and other devices in the inner armor, are all under development.
Once these components are installed into powered armor, only superhumans of extremely large stature can support them.
However, even with Salomon's current financial resources, it's difficult to support so many research projects simultaneously. The Malik family's support is merely a drop in the ocean. The researchers sent by the Malik family are like a drop of water thrown into the sea, insignificant in the vibrant research team of the Immortal City. Many research projects still require Salomon to personally lead and even participate in solving problems that ordinary humans cannot solve for the time being.
Princess Shuri of the Wakanda royal family barely gets any sleep under his command, as the knowledge of the Immortal City is simply too vast. Stephanie also has dark circles under her eyes from exhaustion, as she has to handle all the expenses and income. And in the even more secure biological laboratory, only Salomon knows what is happening inside.
Since the Hydra researchers arrived, Salomon has personally executed two scientists who went mad. They shouted the name of the Black Goat of the Forest before tearing their own skin open. To prevent them from influencing others, Salomon has commissioned Gideon Malik to issue death certificates to the families of the biologists, and subsequently injected the newcomers with some kind of drug he himself had concocted.
After being injected with the drug, all emotional fluctuations are temporarily suppressed to prevent them from going insane while studying. However, this expensive drug is scarce, and only those who notice something is wrong with a person can request a dose from Maya Hansen. Those unfortunate enough to go insane are burned to ashes by designated members of the sorority using flamethrowers, leaving not a single cell behind.
Worse still, the Immortal City lies thousands of feet underground, and currently all bulk cargo transportation relies solely on Salomon's portals. The most advanced ventilation systems must operate at full capacity to prevent the city's inhabitants from suffocating. Only essential supplies and food are transported from the surface of Rome through ancient transport routes, and these routes, designed for secrecy, often have limited capacity.
Everyone was short of time, and Salomon had to make the most of it by reading all the useful magic books.
The fake, high-tech fireplace screen displayed randomized, computer-generated flame images, illuminating the not-so-large room along with the piles of candles on the bronze-framed mahogany desk. The candles were infused with invigorating essential oils, their pungent, minty aroma permeating almost every strand of the sorcerer's hair.
"Would you like to join us for a movie, darling? If so, please get some chips. And some chocolate; I remember Joan bought a lot, it's on the first shelf on the left side of the fridge." The witch sat on the chaise lounge by the fireplace, taking a bottle of champagne from the ice bucket. She snapped her fingers, filling her and Joan's glasses with champagne. Today, Joan was going to catch up on the movies she'd missed for five hundred years, and the study happened to be the perfect size for a home theater.
Nothing is more delightful than sipping champagne, watching an old movie, and cuddling a chubby cat. If you could add two comfortable chaise lounges (these luxurious chairs were once furniture Joan of Arc bought from Versailles), and some appetizers that could be picked up with two fingers.
Diana had spent the whole night preparing these appetizers, and Salomon's tasting of them was the best reward for her.
The apartment's liquor cabinet kept expanding, and now it held nine bottles of champagne. Bayonetta placed them one by one into the ice bucket, intending to end their lives tonight surrounded by Anna Karenina, War and Peace, On the Origin of Species, and The Prince, under the watchful eyes of Apollo and Matthew, the Virgin Mary and the wise men, accompanied by oysters or caviar.
