Chapter 585 Battle of the Lonely Bridge

Chapter 585 The Battle of the Lonely Bridge (Second Update! Earning money for cat food!)

"I thought you'd arrived a while ago!" Jacob's voice came through the walkie-talkie. Due to the considerable distance, relying solely on drones as signal relays resulted in significant audio interference during the conversation. Even so, Salomon could still detect relief in his voice. After Salomon and Catherine's squad had advanced rapidly, the Undead Legion's forces spontaneously retreated towards the mountaintop, which accelerated the advance from the rear.

"Do you want to witness this with your own eyes, Jacob?" Salomon squinted, peering through the strong winds and snow at the mountaintop at the surging undead army ahead. These dead men couldn't stop him, but without his bomb gun, clearing them out would certainly be quite time-consuming. Considering his ammunition reserves, Salomon took out a fireball wand, imbued with supermagic techniques and some of his personal aesthetic touches; the explosion would be quite spectacular.

“I don’t mind at all, and I think it’s necessary.” After a few clicks on the walkie-talkie, Jacob’s voice became clearer. “The Divine Source has changed a bit, and I still don’t understand why. If it weren’t for the change in the Divine Source, I don’t think my alchemy would have caused this.” He said with a smile, “Perhaps I could say it’s entirely due to the instability of your alchemical products?”

"That's the Philosopher's Stone, Jacob. Did you use it to transform gold?"

"Otherwise, how was this city built? Refugees don't have gold to whitewash the statues."

"So, my product isn't bad," Salomon said with a pleased expression. It seemed he might actually have a chance to create the Philosopher's Stone in the future. That was a coveted treasure in the field of alchemy, enough to secure his place in the annals of magic across multiple dimensions. The battle ahead wasn't too difficult for him; having experienced many large-scale battles, Salomon had already developed his own combat techniques. He told Catherine and her team to wait where they were, then he used Fade and Levitate to reach the head of the only solitary bridge leading to the Chamber of Souls. The Undead Legion had set up a defense there—the soldiers in front wore armor, wielding shields, longswords, and halberds, while those in the rear carried quivers and gripped longbows. The dried flesh on their faces was proof of the torture inflicted by the [Divine Source]; their shriveled veins contained no blood, driven only by their constantly burning souls. Their tactics were entirely from the era of ancient cold weapons; if Salomon's technology were at a medieval level, the Undead Legion might actually be able to stop him.

He chanted a spell softly, and several black, gelatinous tentacles emerged from the shadows, blocking the undead legion's retreat. The dark shadows stretched to the soldiers' feet, engulfing and crushing the archers in the rear. Taking advantage of the undead legion's inability to retreat and their unawareness of his position, Salomon chanted the next line of the spell. A pool of black sludge formed in the center of the formation, and except for a few soldiers who reacted quickly and were not carrying shields, everyone else unsurprisingly fell onto the slippery, asphalt. Only then did Salomon signal the Sisterhood to activate their Steel Wings, taking off from the unfinished dome of the lecture hall twenty meters below, crashing down like meteors onto the front of the undead legion's barely intact battle formation.

Catherine's squad specializes in close combat. While they don't shy away from ranged firepower, they prefer the thrill of slicing through enemies with their chainsaws to the roar of bomb guns. Especially against armored foes; in Catherine's mind, nothing is more satisfying than the sight of rapidly spinning serrations cutting through steel and the flesh beneath.

Salomon couldn't figure out what changes had occurred to Catherine's alchemy engine, but he was still happy to see such changes.

"Make way for your father, girls." Salomon extended his ringed hand, and a series of lightning bolts leaped between the armor of the undead legion, the flesh beneath the armor emitting a pungent, burnt stench. The soldiers, seasoned by countless deaths, immediately recognized Salomon as the most dangerous. They charged along the long bridge, halberds raised, towards Salomon and the girls.

Then came a burst of gunfire, and the Undead Legion's halberdiers fell like knights in the age of muskets.

The 12-inch caliber explosive round is louder than a pistol of the same caliber, and its propellant charge is comparable to that of a rifle bullet. Combined with its internal mechanical structure and far-from-its-time propellant composition, this 7mm explosive round possesses unparalleled drag and penetrating power (meaning it explodes). Without the aid of power armor, ordinary people would find it difficult to use such an extremely violent automatic weapon.

Catherine reluctantly pulled out the pistol that was always hanging at her waist. She raised the gun, aimed, and waited a moment. With a sound of the air expanding violently, a straight beam of blue plasma, carrying the heat of the sun, brutally smashed through the dense crowd, creating a passage filled with ozone, molten iron, and the smell of burnt flesh.

She glanced enviously at the bomb gun in her companion's hand, then sighed helplessly. Just like her choice of the chainsaw sword over the force field sword, she felt it wasn't loud enough, not big enough. As the squad leader, she needed to carry a weapon powerful enough to break through defenses, a weapon far superior to a bomb gun. As a recently acquired weaponry in the Immortal City, Wakanda's Science Department had invested heavily in this technology, perfecting the plasma gun's structure and reducing its failure rate.

The androids advanced steadily, while simultaneously, the undead soldiers scattered throughout the Lost City, killed by the combat squads, respawned from the Chamber of Souls. Without time to don armor, they grabbed simple weapons and charged towards Salomon and Catherine's combat squads. Just as they struggled to suppress the resurrected undead army's offensive, the hum of engines piercing the clouds grew louder. An assault transport ship, equipped with a machine gun on each side of its nose, climbed rapidly from the foot of the mountain, then with incredible maneuverability turned and swooped down towards the isolated bridge.

The aft hatch of the assault transport boat slowly opened, and a five-person combat team carrying heavy firepower jumped out. They seamlessly took over the positions of Catherine's team. Their powered armor locked into position, their steel high heels pinning them to the spot. Motors hummed, and five heavy explosive machine guns, connected to ammunition belts and backpacks, were slung at their waists, ready to fire the moment Catherine's team ran out of ammunition. A metal storm and miniature implosions, many times more intense than before, swept across the entire bridge. The deafening gunfire even cracked the ice on the structure, triggering a series of miniature avalanches.

Even the power of the [Divine Source] could not immediately resurrect the soldiers; burning their souls to rebuild their bodies took time. When the heavy firepower squad released the trigger, there was not a single intact corpse left on the isolated bridge; the piled-up limbs and broken armor were so numerous that they covered the bridge surface in layers of stone bricks.

"Since you all came into my life, I've felt superfluous."

"Please don't say that, Your Majesty. Humans cannot be compared to machines." Although she was wearing a helmet, Aura's gentle voice still reached Salomon's ears through the encrypted network communication. Apart from the first homunculus, Dina, Salomon did not interfere much with the growth process of all the other homunculus. He only set the lower limit values when he cultivated them, so there are subtle differences between the homunculus in terms of both personality and physique.

Just like Biora, no one knows why her power armor's chest plate needed to be custom-made. This gentle android often stood guard outside Salomon's office, her daily work similar to that of Salomon's personal assistant in the Immortal City. Besides Tita, she had more contact with Dinah than any other android, and the witch also knew the name of this android who handed over work to Dinah every day.

"Everyone activate your Steel Wings, let's go straight into the Chamber of Souls. Hurry up, don't let those unlucky souls come back to life," Salomon said with a laugh. "I can't wait to unwrap my presents."
