Chapter 615 Genetically Modified Warriors (Second Update)
"Loneliness is our greatest enemy, Wanda," Salomon said in a deep voice.
He stretched out a finger, and a slice of cream cake floated out of the portal, landing lightly on the tray. Then came a fruitcake, a brownie, which filed out like train carriages, dancing as they landed on their respective little plates. Then came candles of various colors and beautifully wrapped candies. Flowers bloomed on the mottled walls, the rusted pipes were instantly polished smooth, and the pale light was bathed in a warm, dim glow. A fairytale atmosphere filled the dilapidated cell.
He used illusion magic to create a virtual fairy tale kingdom.
"But with dessert, none of that matters!" The sorcerer winked playfully, taking a beautiful enamel teapot. It was the night before the Avengers' planned attack, the day they finished their reconnaissance, and he hadn't discussed tomorrow's plans with anyone else. Even though the Venerable One had asked him to ensure the scepter was returned to Asgard, he had no intention of participating in that utterly boring battle; it wasn't his battle. "No lessons today. You've learned what you were supposed to learn, and what you weren't supposed to learn. Stop reciting spells, Wanda. Now it's time to enjoy yourself."
Wanda was thrilled; she saw hope for revenge. She would face to face, eye to eye, the man who had taken her parents' lives.
However, what was more important and exciting for Wanda was the prospect of a peaceful life after revenge beckoning to her.
She smiled foolishly, repeatedly mentioning her plans to open a clothing store and send her younger brother to university. Or perhaps she'd learn to make cakes—the delicious treats might have sparked those ideas. She spoke these words amidst the desserts and candles, but Pietro himself remained uninterested. He listlessly poked at the cream with his fork, then pulled the tightly bitten utensil from the cake's opening. He repeated this endlessly until the cake let out a faint scream, at which point he listlessly cut into it and ate it.
Ever since Wanda received Salomon's message that the Avengers were about to launch an attack, she had been talking about the future for days. Since he couldn't rush to the top of the castle and express his excitement to the star-studded night sky, his only option was to torment his food.
The cunning brownie tried to bribe Pietro with a giant cigarette from its belly as a guarantee of freedom from suffering, but the cigarette was quickly confiscated by the quick-thinking Salomon, who also flattened the brownie on the plate—these sweets were commissioned by Salomon to be made by the Scottish Azshara goblins in his apartment. For this, Salomon went so far as to double the size of the goblins and give them all the poisonous mushroom juice from his alchemy lab, all so they could create food sized for humans. The adorable goblins in their floral dresses first huddled together and danced, then chattered and bargained for a while before agreeing to Salomon's request—from then on, all the Cheshire Cat's shed fur belonged to the Azshara goblins. They planned to knit several sweaters before winter arrived to get through this year's dangerous winter solstice.
That's the downside of food made with fairy magic: while the food may be beautifully presented, it, like fairies, loves chaos and enjoys creating chaos. Take, for example, the Hokkaido cheesecakes currently firing each other with cheese-made pistols. Each shot reduces their mass by one point, and despite the impending end, they're still having a blast.
Salomon sensed the unease in the Maximov siblings.
While the hope of revenge lies ahead, how can they guarantee that they can accomplish it?
The desserts soothed their anxiety, trying to make them temporarily forget the impending battle with their pleasant sweetness.
"Will you join us against those Americans in the Avengers, teacher?" Wanda's question made Pietro prick up his ears as well. They longed to hear an affirmative answer from their mentor, but to their disappointment, Salomon shook his head without hesitation. Wanda's expression visibly turned dejected, as if the sweet cake no longer held any appeal for the young girl.
"That's your battle, I have no right to interfere." Salomon wasn't unaware of the change in their emotions, but he still spoke softly in his usual gentle tone, "I have more important things to do."
"What could be more enjoyable than hitting Americans?" Pietro asked, puzzled.
“Many. The world is vast, not just a castle, a prison, or a country.” Salomon looked meaningfully into Pietro’s eyes. Although the Maximov siblings were much older than him, he always displayed the wisdom of an elder. “This world faces threats, and the great enemy will never stop its advance.” He spread his arms, as if the Maximov siblings’ vision had expanded in the same way. “There will always be things to kill, and people to save. Compared to the innocent lives about to be lost, your revenge is insignificant.”
Wanda frowned. "That's hurtful, teacher."
"Yes, but that's the truth. Once you've finished your vengeance, you'll face the real world," the sorcerer said. "Especially you, Wanda. Your fate is intertwined with that of a great enemy, and the challenges you'll face in the future are far more terrifying than those you'll face tomorrow."
"So, tomorrow's revenge is going to be easy?" Pietro asked.
"Yes. Go to sleep after you finish your cake." Salomon stood up from his chair. "Remember to brush your teeth."
"Remember to brush your teeth, then get some rest." After receiving this instruction, the boy sighed deeply. He went to the washroom and cleaned his teeth as instructed, but the wounds he had just cleaned still stung, and he couldn't sleep at all. Although only half a year had passed, the boy's growth rate far exceeded that of his peers, as did his knowledge. Just a few minutes ago, he was breathing the scorching and toxic air of an alien planet, hunting giant rays migrating through the red desert with a spear crackling with electricity; the next moment, his prey was cleaved in two, and foul-smelling blood and contaminated sand splattered all over him. The boy let out a low growl of discontent, but when he saw his master, the anger at having his prey stolen instantly turned into joy.
"According to Earth's standard time, you have a battle tomorrow," Salomon gave him bluntly. The boy looked at him expectantly, and the arcane mage blinked, a smile quickly spreading across his face. "Do you like alien rays?" he asked. "I found traces of your use of fire, and locals over a hundred kilometers away even traded fish skins and seasonings with you."
"It's not very tasty, it tastes like a lot of metabolic waste, probably to reduce water evaporation. I got a perfect score in biology class taught by Ms. Maya Hansen," the boy said with a smile. His voice was a bit lower than it had been six months ago, and his short stubble was full of dust. "They're very welcoming, but the seasoning isn't really suitable for ordinary Earthlings," he added. "I didn't go to the big cities; they don't welcome outsiders there. Primitive people who can only use gestures and can't speak can't get in."
"Given that your surgery is not yet fully completed, you have achieved quite a lot in a week." The sorcerer took the fishbone spear that the boy had crafted through trading and hunting and examined it carefully. "Including your weapon, this is a fine javelin."
"I prefer bomb guns," the boy said shyly. "I accepted help, it's nothing. Let's add this race to the list of aliens that might coexist with humans, and I hope that list is long."
"If they don't want to..."
"I know I will kill them with my own hands."
