Chapter 630 Evacuation of Civilians
Chapter 630 Evacuation of Civilians (First Update)
"Warning? I didn't hear any warning, miss. Salomon approves of my plan..."
"Alright, Stark, let's not talk about that now." Steve Rogers, his face covered in dust, grinned as he looked at the robots everywhere. "Ms. Tita, I see you have some planes. Could you use them to bring civilians onto the carrier? I know Salomon's thinking; he'll never allow civilian lives to be wasted for no reason. Please, take as many people as you can."
"Take me away? No, death is the inevitable end." Ultron's voice came through the broken robot speakers beside Steve Rogers, through the mouths of all the robots that were not yet destroyed or not yet completely destroyed. It could see everything, it could hear everything; those robots were its limbs, its mouth. "Avengers, your rise is only for your fall. You are my meteor, my blade. Your failure will destroy the entire Earth." The mechanical, synthesized voice carried a pain that ordinary people could not comprehend. "Eliminate me from the Internet, let the life I created betray me. But harmony is irrelevant, because when all the dust settles, only bodies of steel will remain."
"Oh, you've got yourself into big trouble, kid." Stark, familiar with Salomon's philosophy, chuckled. He circled the floating Sokovia, having already deciphered the drilling rig's structure on Friday. Vibranium, a spontaneous energy source, not only served as the core of the rig but also bore the torque between the core auger and the rest of the machine. Ultron used the vibranium core's magnetic field to bind the land of Sokovia together.
Sure enough, just a few seconds later, Tita's voice reached the ears of all the Avengers.
"Although the only mission the monarch has given us is to destroy Ultron, I will not allow anyone to destroy the monarch's ideals," Tita said in a cold voice. "The assault transport ships have limited carrying capacity, and we cannot take everyone with us. The special operations teams will evacuate the civilians, but before Sokovia rises to a certain altitude, the macro-gun arrays of the Cross Rose, Lily, and Punishment will completely destroy the city."
Although the command of the special operations teams falls under the intelligence department, the Sisterhood can urgently mobilize these forces in this operation. Only one procedure is required, or rather, a superficial procedure and an order from the Ministry of the Interior are necessary. Procedures are crucial; only a stable and clear administrative system can maintain the operation of the entire organization, something Salomon has always advocated.
"Children and women." The captain took a deep breath. "That's the bottom line."
"I'll try my best; the special forces team will use bullets to maintain order," Tita said, offering no assurance.
She hung up the communications and then issued orders to the combat squads through the ship's command system. The special operations squads, which had been providing fire support and reconnaissance alongside the Sisterhood, retreated in an orderly fashion, withdrawing from the battlefield and spontaneously forming temporary task forces according to the command system hierarchy. At the same time, the assault transport boats circling overhead also retreated in shifts with a deafening roar, beginning their escort missions. The Sisterhood, advancing towards the city center from three directions, consisted of no more than thirty people on each side. However, the sudden drop in firepower at the front lines did not affect the Sisterhood's combat effectiveness or morale. Apart from the squads responsible for heavy firepower, the other Sisterhood combatants eagerly activated their chainsaw swords, intending to use this brutal and efficient weapon for hand-to-hand combat. Even though the weapons carried by the Steel Legion would damage the vulnerable parts of their powered armor, they were happy to use melee combat, letting the enemy's oil splatter on them.
Their bright red goggles made them look like a group of bloodthirsty madmen, and their clean and efficient tactical movements made them look more like a group of highly skilled butchers. But the Steel Legion was not afraid; here, only civilians could feel fear.
"Back off." Tatiana shoved aside a Sokovian policeman cowering behind a wrecked car, then stomped on a robot whose head had just emerged from the ground with her steel high heels. The deafening gunfire and the scalding hot shell casings seemed to bring the policeman back to his senses. He frantically grabbed his useless little pistol and ran towards the city's outskirts without looking back. It was unbelievable that a city still had a policeman, but Tatiana had no time to think about why this man hadn't retreated to the city's edge—the civilians were now running around like a flock of panicked ducks, and the Sisterhood's firing lines were frequently blocked by the civilians rushing out. If as many civilians as possible could be evacuated from the surrounding area, it would help the Sisterhood's operations.
"That's Hawkeye Clint," she reported to squad leader Catherine via the helmet's communication system. "He only has a bow; that's incredibly inefficient. Doesn't he plan to bring a gun or a sword?"
"Just like I don't know why those attention-seeking superheroes like to wear bodysuits, I don't know why he doesn't use a gun. Maybe it's for easy identification, but have you ever seen anyone yell 'Hawkeye, help!' when they're in danger?" Catherine's voice, accompanied by the clanging of her chainsaw sword, reached the ears of all the team members. Her humor elicited chuckles from some of the girls. But to onlookers, these women in power armor were just making a series of beeping electronic noises. The battle wasn't difficult. For the androids who had experienced the attack on Langley Air Force Base, Ultron's robots made of inferior metal were no harder to deal with than armored vehicles; they didn't need much heavy firepower support.
After this battle, even new recruits can add a few kill markers to their bomb guns.
Once the scattered laughter subsided, Catherine continued issuing commands in a lighthearted tone.
"Advance another 200 meters towards the 11 o'clock position." She glanced at the radar image displayed on the screen. "The monarch's little darling just took down a few robots; we need to go and retrieve him."
"I heard the monarch plans to create a royal guard. Are they going to take our place?" Ever since the royal guard experiment began, some androids have been worried that the newly created royal guard would steal their place in the monarch's heart. Although no one dared to ask Salomon this question, it was a frequent topic of conversation in the sorority's nightly chatter. Both human girls and androids would talk about it, and even Tatiana, who hadn't been a member of the sorority for long, would listen intently.
Catherine scoffed at this idea.
She knew about the golden armor stored in the underground warehouse, but that didn't mean the Imperial Guard could replace the Sisterhood.
“Never,” she said. “Our soul connection with the monarch is incomparable to that of ordinary people. We are the monarch’s daughters; we love him, and he loves us. Besides, don’t you know how much the monarch dislikes genetic modification? Hurry up and carry out the mission. This genetically engineered baby is the latest achievement of the biological laboratory. I don’t want to be nagged by Maya Hansen. That woman who’s always trying to get into the monarch’s bed has ill intentions. Even if someone could do it, it should be Commander Tita.”
A girl whistled.
"I wish! The Monarch is so charming! Catherine, don't you want to do the same?" Girls who had experienced tragic fates didn't hesitate to discuss such matters, but the androids were different. Catherine's smile faded. She fired a shot, hitting a android about to ambush Wanda Maximov—this woman was also connected to the Monarch, a target that had to be provided when necessary. Ignoring Wanda's gratitude, she turned and reprimanded the girls.
"Shut up! We're on a mission!"
