This plate of pasta was a spur-of-the-moment creation of the witch; she had even added sugar and vinegar to the diced tomatoes. Bayonetta was so enthusiastic; she even brought the plate to the bedside, so much so that Dina thought she had lost her job. The sorcerer ate with tears streaming down his face under the witch's expectant gaze, because Bayonetta's food tasted exactly like alchemical potions.

On the bright side, at least this time we were able to cook the diced tomatoes properly, right?

Perhaps I really shouldn't have fired that Russian chef. I should have been more lenient with him instead of sending him back to the restaurant in Moscow. I recently bought it, and although I've never been there myself, I still need to make sure my manager makes a good impression on the staff. "I guarantee this is the best pasta I've ever had." Salomon sniffed. "I didn't cry, it's just a little hot. You cook even leather belts well, Bayonetta. I think we can save some for Joan of Arc; she must miss the taste of home."

"Great, the pasta in New York is awful. Besides, I've already asked for leave for you, darling." The witch winked, a broad smile on her face. "Anyway, you're not in a hurry to attend Jane Foster's lecture, are you?"

"It's just a Nobel Prize, nothing special. I want to call Darcy. I've missed 110 calls already, she must be frantic." Salomon casually placed the plate on the table, then picked up his phone and dialed back under the witch's gaze. "Darcy, I'm sorry, I just returned to Earth yesterday. Yes, in Sokovia. I saw Thor, but didn't get his autograph, he went back to Asgard... I'm not going to go all the way to Asgard just to get you an autographed photo... No big cigarettes, you can shoot those old guys, they can't do any research anyway."

"Stephanie, take a break. I'll come pick you up."

"Agent Hand, yes, I'm listening..." Salomon's expression shifted, anger and sorrow like the ever-growing black shadows of the Rocky Mountains under the setting sun. "I understand. He said in a deep voice, "Human blood debts must be washed away with the blood of aliens, and this time is no exception. Tell Agent Coulson that this is my will, and if he insists on being buried with him, I hope you will not hesitate."

"What happened?" Bayonetta's elegant eyebrows furrowed. "Has someone important died?"

"Yes, a venerable mortal. Bayonetta, perhaps I need to attend a negotiation, or a massacre."

Skye had just taken down a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent when Melinda May arrived. "We're trying to figure out what's going on, but you'd better stop, Skye."

"What did you do?" The mixed-race female hacker strode over aggressively. "Gonzalez shot and wounded my mother. He declared war on us! You should have stopped!"

"We need to see Gonzalez. Wherever he is, we can still salvage the situation."

"It's too late. Take your people and leave."

"I need to see Gonzalez first."

The rookie agent, Skye, honed her skills through numerous missions; she was no longer the naive young girl she was when she first joined S.H.I.E.L.D. But Melinda May hadn't expected Skye's resolve to be so strong, that she would actually reach out and stop her. Melinda received intelligence that Agent Victoria Hand had immediately dispatched an assault transport ship to the Inhuman settlement of "Afterlife" after the gunfire, and Agent Hand was reportedly on that vessel. Melinda intended to resolve this issue quickly; if she waited for Victoria Hand to act, that woman's ruthless methods and Salomon's technical support would be enough to unleash a massacre in "Afterlife." This was not what Agent Coulson wanted; Agent Coulson desired peace, not war.

Victoria Hand found Melinda May unconscious, initially believing she had died at the hands of the Inhumans. After diagnosis, the Chinese-American agent was found to have a mild concussion. Recalling the chaotic scene earlier, Hand had no idea who had attacked Melinda May.

Victoria Hand contacted the former head of S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy and now the commander of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s only carrier strike group since Gonzalez. "Tell me, Agent Weaver, what gift did Gonzalez prepare for the Inhuman leader?" she asked. "Gonzalez is dead, and your alliance with Agent Coulson is null and void. I'm not Agent Coulson; I know what to do in this situation, and I'm capable of doing it—something Agent Coulson couldn't. He's no longer an agent; his emotions outweigh his reason. Tell me everything you know, and I'll make the judgment."
