Marvel Magic Case Files
Chapter 698
Chapter 698
British weather is notoriously bad, and Wanda already knew that. But even now, she cursed inwardly at the trouble this awful weather was causing her. Rainwater was seeping from the grass beneath her carefully chosen boots, the heels soaked with black mud particles, and even her umbrella couldn't stop the flooding on Hall Road. Heather grew haphazardly, and small gargoyle statues sat comically on either side of the low, moss-covered fence. Pietro shrugged—he was wearing sneakers, and although the soles were soaked, it didn't stop him from playing. He even deliberately stomped on them a few times, making a squeaking sound.
"Hey, do you want me to carry you there?" Pietro spread his arms. "I promise no one will see. Agent Hill already told me to avoid being seen using my superpowers because we don't have any permits. Are you still angry, sister?"
"Yes, I'm still angry, Pietro," Wanda rolled her eyes, annoyed. The hot coffee she'd drunk a while ago offered no warmth; a gust of cold wind sent shivers down her spine beneath her crimson leather coat. She wasn't sure if this was related to her destination; generally, places haunted by ghosts were colder. The problem was, the temperature in the English countryside had been steadily dropping during the rains, and the weather that had just required light summer clothes had suddenly turned into the late autumn chill.
"This is a joint operation, let's show some teamwork!" Pietro said helplessly. After a long period of training, he was finally allowed to participate in the operation, but Agent Hill didn't assign him to the force fighting Hydra. Instead, he was sent to Essex, England, for a mission that sounded rather ridiculous. Agent Hill believed that this was a joint operation between the Immortal City and the Avengers, and it was important no matter what. Pietro agreed listlessly, but he didn't expect that the person he met in New York would be Wanda.
"Hi, Pietro!" Wanda greeted her long-lost relative with great enthusiasm. In contrast to Wanda's joy, her brother seemed rather gloomy. She tried to cheer him up, "What's wrong? Is it so terrible that I said I'd cook you a meal?"
"I heard about him from the Avengers, Wanda. You don't need to risk your life for him. What he's been doing lately... I mean, he's certainly helped us a lot, taught us to read and exercise, but that shouldn't dictate your life." Pietro's expression was grave as he stirred his coffee. In the past, he and Wanda certainly wouldn't have been able to afford a coffee shop in New York, and might not even have had the courage to step into one because of the prices on the menu. This was New York, this was Manhattan, a place where the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, where even doing absolutely nothing for a day would result in enormous expenses.
If they were still the same siblings from the Eastern European countryside, they wouldn't even have the money to sit here.
Pietro hadn't forgotten who saved them, but that didn't mean he'd unconditionally condone Salomon's actions. When he mentioned the internal Avengers discussions about Salomon, Wanda's expression turned cold; the joy of reuniting with family vanished instantly. She angrily cited the East Coast earthquake as a counter-argument—an event she'd personally experienced. She deeply understood that the so-called Avengers' supposed problem-solving was trivial; the only event potentially threatening world safety was something they themselves had created. In contrast, the actions of Immortal City and Kamar-Taj were all for saving more lives, even at their own expense. "He wants you to go to school. He's even arranged a bright future for you, so you can live well even without superpowers," Wanda said in a low voice. "Do you want to spend your whole life in that base, fulfilling your superhero dreams?"
“Don’t dwell on hatred, sister,” Pietro said, frowning. “Stark assured me that he didn’t sell those weapons to the opposition. And even if he did, shouldn’t we hate the person who dropped the bomb more?”
"I'm not as naive as you think. You always treat me like someone to be lectured, as if I can't even dress myself or feed myself." Wanda scoffed. "Salomon already told us who we should really hate, and Stark is just one link in the chain. Twelve minutes doesn't mean you're more mature than me, Pietro. I have my own judgment."
"Including killing innocent people?"
"While I don't fully understand the philosophy of Kamar-Taj, I know that sacrificing a few to save the many is just the surface. The real core philosophy is 'to do anything for the survival of humanity.' That's what I'm doing now, instead of being a tool of the US government to attack dissidents."
"The Avengers are an independent organization!"
"That's not necessarily true." Wanda shook her head. "No one will allow the Avengers to escape control for too long. You can't guess how many intelligence agents are in that base. If they're determined, Stark will never find out. Agent Hill has always known about this, but she hasn't said anything because she knows what the Avengers' fate will be, and no one can stop that day from coming."
"And what about you, Wanda? What arrangements have been made for you?" Pietro curled his lip. "Learn magic, and then fight a bunch of monsters? What's the difference between our jobs?"
"Hydra won't destroy the world, but a monster that can cause earthquakes on the East Coast will. That's the difference."
"Are you defending him like this just because he bought you a house and is keeping you as a mistress? My sister, even if you like him, you can't lose sight of your own feelings. When did you become this kind of person?"
Wanda's expression immediately turned ugly, and Pietro realized he had said the wrong thing. The atmosphere between the siblings remained extremely tense until they boarded the plane. Pietro apologized profusely and offered a hand in reconciliation, which Wanda shook with great resistance, seemingly wanting another argument. In contrast to their initial meeting, the siblings' emotions had reversed, but Wanda was clearly holding a much bigger grudge.
This assault transport ship from the Immortal City is not an intra-atmospheric aircraft, but a transatmospheric vessel equipped with twin assault cannons, heavy bombs, and even missile launchers. Its size and weight far exceed those of any transatmospheric aircraft currently possessed by humanity. As a fusion of Wakanda's technology and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s technology, Malbus made significant modifications. This specially crafted aircraft features thickened armor and is equipped with even more formidable weapons and magical runes, all for the safety of its passengers. This aircraft was a gift from Salomon to Wanda, and according to the witch's wishes, it was painted deep red, with a golden double-headed eagle symbol erected at the front, signifying its owner's identity.
"Don't be angry, my sister. Only you can handle exploring a haunted house." Pietro already understood why Agent Hill would include him in this mission. Perhaps Salomon and Agent Hill had already reached an agreement to resolve the conflict between the siblings. Both sides believed that their own Maximov could persuade the other Maximov.
