Chapter 763 Alien Legend
Chapter 763 Alien Legend (First Update)
With a blinding flash of light from the teleportation, the suddenly expanding air emitted a piercing scream, squeezing out a gigantic hemispherical hole in the swirling dust. But the sandstorm engulfed them again with even greater ferocity.
To ordinary people with no protection, the sandstorm was like rapidly flying needles, repeatedly tearing at their skin until flesh was stripped away, exposing the bones. But to the fully armed sorority, the sandstorm was merely a faint murmur on their armor, hardly enough to hinder their steps.
The assault team and the heavy weapons team formed a defensive formation the moment they landed. Catherine even activated her beloved chainsaw sword, vigilantly scanning her surroundings. The detection devices built into their helmets clearly outlined the positions of their teammates with bright lines, allowing them to maintain their training progress in the sandstorm.
This planet has an average temperature slightly lower than Earth's, and after being probed by powered armor, it's barely warm enough for human habitation. Due to its rotation period, the planet experiences extremely long nights, and its massive satellite reflects starlight, turning everything on the surface a dark blue. Massive dust storms blanket the planet, like stumbling giants wandering aimlessly. If the Immortal City could launch satellites, they would see that the planet's surface is entirely covered in dark blue desert, with only a few areas receiving sunlight to maintain their temperature.
Nobody is interested in doing geological exploration work now.
The sandstorm not only affected the Sisterhood's weapons and equipment, but also damaged radio communications and the air filtration systems of the power armor. After barely confirming intelligence and location with each other through the communicator, the assault team and the heavy weapons team escorted Salomon to the target location.
The only material they could use for positioning was sand from this planet. Salomon could only send their forces to the planet, but they couldn't control the destination; they could only minimize errors and ensure safety. Therefore, their first task upon landing on the planet wasn't to search for Leopold Fitz or Gemma Simmons, but to regroup with other teams and form a closely coordinated combat force.
Meanwhile, Salomon was also carefully listening to the sounds of the planet. This was not difficult for him, and he quickly screened out the non-Immortal City combat squads from the spell feedback.
He heard a faint, malevolent cry echoing within the sandstorm. This malice floated above it, drifting like algae on water, carried by the sand and wind—it was a consciousness, a shattered soul, a collective consciousness composed of countless tiny consciousnesses. The arcane mage, upon contact with that consciousness, unearthed its memories, its pain; for millennia, the creature's wailing had replaced the roar of the atmosphere, seeping into the genetic sequence of this planet and all the intelligent beings that had ever existed there. Salomon deleted some information, sending the location of that malice to the mind of every combat squad leader. He acted as a monitor, preventing combat squads from inadvertently encountering that malevolent being.
He was certain that the twisted consciousness belonged to the one the Malik family had worshipped as a god for centuries, and that was his target. However, for the sake of his reputation and his promise, he first needed to gather his forces and rescue those two defenseless guys from the S.H.I.E.L.D. science team before figuring out how to solve the problem.
"I feel...not good." The bearded man repeatedly savored the goosebump-covered sensation he had just experienced, as if something had swept over him. Ever since he found that woman outside his home, strange things had been happening one after another. First, he learned that many years had passed on Earth, and then he experienced frequent sandstorms and auditory hallucinations.
Someone is calling the woman's name.
"Maybe someone's outside!" Gemma Simmons sniffed.
On this planet, every drop of water is a precious resource. She hadn't showered in many years, and neither had Will, a NASA astronaut. Their only method of cleaning was to mimic birds and take sand baths, using friction to wash away the dirt and grime produced by metabolism on their skin. Simmons refused this painful-sounding method of bathing, conserving water as much as possible each day just to be able to wash her face.
"impossible!"
"I'm here, Will," Simmons said, pointing to himself. "Am I not a human being?"
Will chuckled mockingly. "You mean, there's going to be another unlucky soul coming across that boulder?"
"Hmm... I just forgot to lock the door." Simmons tilted her head. She thought of Fitz.
Ever since she arrived on this planet, she had often thought of Fitz, knowing he would stop at nothing to find her. This thought was like a small, warm campfire burning in her despairing heart, helping her to find her way back to Earth.
Will poured her a cup of hot tea. The tea leaves in the sealed box had come in handy since Simmons arrived; with an extra worker, the search for water had doubled in efficiency. Will didn't mind brewing today's water rations into tea. "Sometimes, when sandstorms hit, I've heard the howls of demons," Will said softly, holding his teacup. "I know it's superstition, but... do you think there's still life on this planet?"
"I don't think anyone else would come here besides us."
"But I heard the sound of a colossal creature moving. Countless nights, as I tossed and turned in bed, I heard that sound lingering at the door. I stayed up all night, clutching my homemade spear tightly, my back drenched in cold sweat. After the sandstorm, I went out to check and found several snake tracks on the sand, their tracks bound together by a sticky substance that even the fiercest winds couldn't disperse. They formed mesmerizing circles around the skylight… That thing wanted to eat me, Simmons. It was waiting for me…"
"That's a good story, Will. You'll have plenty to tell when we get back to Earth," Simmons said with a laugh, patting the table. NASA, or rather the Malik family, had prepared a large amount of supplies for Will when they deployed him to this planet. These supplies had sustained Will until now, and also enabled Simmons to perform his calculations. Especially the hand-cranked generator, which had continued operating until now.
"I'm not the first astronaut to come here," he said. He didn't expect Simmons to believe him immediately. Perhaps he was an impatient young man back then, but years of extraterrestrial life had honed him into a patient survivor.
"I know."
“It wasn’t the last one,” Will said calmly. “They all died; only I survived. You’re a scientist; you should understand that conditions for decomposition are almost impossible in the desert. Yet the astronaut’s body you saw was already skeletal. What does that make you think?”
"A beast?" Simmons shook his head, rejecting the idea himself.
If those astronauts were truly killed by wild beasts, then there would be no way they could have found complete astronaut skeletons, and Will, who had lived there for a long time, would certainly have encountered them as well. She suddenly felt that Will's words, though somewhat comical, represented a certain possibility—a mysterious creature that left serpentine trails and devoured life.
The sandstorm grew stronger and stronger, making the rooftop rattle loudly.
Simmons shivered.
