Chapter 783 I Don't Like It

Chapter 783 I Don't Like It (First Update)

Do you know the difference between the Aesir and the Olympian gods?

This was a rather bizarre question, but Salomon answered it nonetheless.

He recited with remarkable fluency a passage from the three hundred books on the study of the Earth's pantheon, written by His Holiness. He chose this passage because the study of the Aesir and the Olympian gods, two diametrically opposed research subjects, inevitably necessitated a comparison.

"The Aesir possessed bodies before souls, while the Olympians possessed souls before bodies. Therefore, the Aesir had a lifespan limit, while the Olympians did not. The origin of the Aesir is linked to the First Annihilation Movement, serving as further evidence that chaotic forces can move towards order."

"Simple yet correct, suitable for mortals to understand," Athena commented. "You are not mortal, so I need you to continue to expand your knowledge, combining it with the knowledge I have given you, rather than remaining on the books compiled by the Sorcerer Supreme."

The Venerable One's investigation into the origins of various pantheons proves that the Olympian gods' physical bodies formed later than their souls; their bodies were merely the outer garments of their souls, and their flesh and blood did not contain the genomes of the earth gods. The Aesir gods, on the other hand, first possessed physical bodies and then gathered to worship, attempting to ignite the spark of divinity before elevating their divine thrones.

In comparison, the Aesir's potential is significantly greater than that of the Olympian gods. Although, according to Kamar-Taj's observations, even though the Asgardian royal family claims to be gods, most Aesir gods are not yet comparable to other pantheons. Even so, Odin's long-standing plans are sufficient to grant the Aesir some power to manipulate the Sea of Souls.

If things really develop as Odin envisions, Asgard will be elevated to immortal gods, securing their divine status.

It contained both secrets and foresight; this was the answer Athena wanted.

"At the Pantheon Council, the Aesir and Vanir gods stood out. The other gods and the Northern Gods each possessed what the others coveted, and each envied the other's situation. Of course, my father, the god-king, didn't see it that way, but it turned out he was indeed no match for Odin, who possessed divine blood." Athena recounted some ancient secrets to Salomon while directing little Lorna to serve pastries to the guests.

Her conversations with Salomon often contained many topics, some of which were not suitable for ordinary people like Lorna to know. Sometimes they would talk about ancient gods without written records, sometimes about bloody wars, and sometimes even about ghosts and nightmares, about the flaws deeply engraved in human genes that could never be erased, and the indescribable horrors shrouded in mist.

After Salomon's association with the witch, Athena explicitly pointed out the origins of the deities who granted knowledge and power to both the witch and sage races, and their connection to the Earth Mother's first campaign to destroy the gods. Now, she hasn't let little Lorna leave, perhaps because she believes it's necessary for Lorna to know the knowledge they are currently discussing.

“I foresaw the fall of the King of the Gods long ago; it was destined. Even though the Aesir possessed divine blood, they were not immortal. Although Odin actively sought a path to godhood, time waits for no one. The Aesir, possessing only a portion of the genes of the earth gods, were insufficient to achieve Odin's goal.” She took a sip of the pink champagne Bayonetta had bought, then thanked little Lorna for the dessert. “You probably don’t know how much Odin envied your potential, my child.” She subtly pointed out that she already knew the composition of Salomon’s stigmata. “Odin’s power is waning, but even so, he still has the strength for one last desperate attempt. No one dares to underestimate a dying beast, let alone the Allfather.”

"Why bring this up?" Salomon asked, puzzled. "Something's been off about this conversation from the start."

"Looks like you're not so oblivious after all, you silly boy." Athena glanced at her adopted son, then looked at the witch sitting on the armrest of the sofa. "You still have his seed inside you. I didn't expect you two would have time for this. My child, don't you know he got into a fight in a bar and got punched by a lowly Asgardian stonemason?"

Salomon couldn't help but utter a very vulgar curse.

"Why didn't anyone tell me about this?" He was about to put down his glass when he suddenly remembered he was in Athena's apartment, with the witch right next to him. Bayonetta's eyes narrowed, and she glared at him. No one understood why Athena had suddenly brought this up.

She placed her palm on the sorcerer's shoulder.

Salomon felt Bayonetta's touch.

He took a sip of his drink and decided to sit down to express his skepticism about everything Athena had said. "If I'm not mistaken, the Asgardian stonemason you're referring to is Professor Randolph. Even if Odin is weak, he's not so weak that he can't beat a stonemason. If Odin wanted to retaliate, I believe we'd see Professor Randolph's obituary in the newspapers the next day."

"Then let me ask you, why did Odin do this?" Athena countered. "Think more, my child. Odin is a cruel and cunning ruler; don't be deceived by his appearance."

Even Joan of Arc, who was stuffing food into her mouth, began to ponder Odin's intentions. Little Lorna opportunely moved over and sat down on the other side of the armrest of the sofa where Salomon was sitting without saying a word. However, her posture was not as elegant as Bayonetta's; instead, she looked like a flustered little monkey, which was quite amusing.

Salomon patted her head skillfully and then gave his answer.

"Does Odin know that I'll go see him after this happened?"

"You're at least half right." Athena slightly raised her wine glass, expressing her approval to the sorcerer, just as she always had.

Whenever he defeated Athena in a complex game of chess, or when he discovered clues that influenced history in a vast collection of old documents, or when he completed a beautiful work of art, Athena would always express her congratulations in various ways.

She had her own plans, and she even foresaw some of Salomon's future actions, but she put far more effort into teaching Salomon than she did into teaching anyone else. In any case, she was fully deserving of the title of foster mother in her actions.

Salomon would always remember how, in a panic, she stuck her hands into the oven without wearing oven mitts because the desserts were overbaked. He found Athena's flustered and clumsy manner quite endearing, a sight she rarely witnessed.

"I think Odin might want to see you soon, in a discreet way, and the best way to do that is for you to go to him. That cunning old man is likely to make some arrangements before he dies, and my advice is to stay as far away from him as possible; a dying man has no scruples," she said. "Right now, it would be difficult for you to even stop Odin's power, let alone face the blades lurking in the shadows."

"A blade? You mean, Odin will arrange a wife for him?" Bayonetta's sarcastic tone almost pierced Salomon's face, her sarcasm making the arcane mage blush. "I remember that Asgardian woman stabbed him several times when she was courting him; those deep wounds are still on his body to this day."

Bayonetta's light gray eyes shifted to the sorcerer, her carefully cultivated image of a sophisticated housewife crumbling instantly, transforming her back into the sharp-edged witch. "Darling, is this really what you like? Have I been too gentle with you all the time?"

"Odin also uses prophetic magic; he foresaw what status humanity would achieve because of your existence," Athena said, rescuing her adopted son just in time. "But I don't like that crazy woman, Hela. So, do you know what to do?"
