Chapter 789 Magical Offal Soup
Chapter 789 Magical Offal Soup (First Update)
Stephanie entered the Witch's Apartment once again, but this time she wouldn't stay long.
Salomon now works mostly remotely, and her presence here is solely for discussing details and resolving any unforeseen circumstances. For example, the construction permits for the Malik family's castle in Gloucestershire, England, have been completed, and the construction team had already carried out preliminary demolition. No one can access the castle's basement unless engineering machinery is used.
For example, Fitz and Simmons from S.H.I.E.L.D. have been released after quarantine and medical examinations, and Stephanie needs to know if Salomon agrees to let them move freely; or whether Salomon and Agent Coulson have reached some kind of deal, requiring the Immortal City to make any concessions. There's also the issue of the astronaut Will, the disposal of the Boulder, and a series of other tasks that need to be handed over to S.H.I.E.L.D.—if it weren't for the fact that they still possess something given to them by Nick Fury that could threaten the entire world, Stephanie wouldn't want to deal with those fussy guys at S.H.I.E.L.D. Before figuring out how many dangerous items S.H.I.E.L.D. had hidden through "Project Slingshot" and plundered them all, before fully understanding how many secrets Nick Fury was hiding, even Salomon had to ensure that S.H.I.E.L.D. wouldn't kill him.
Moreover, S.H.I.E.L.D. has a time-traveling mission to complete, and they all need to survive before that can be accomplished.
At least they're alive; Salomon doesn't guarantee their limbs will remain intact.
In addition, there are issues such as bulk commodity procurement and funding for materials for Mars.
The most important thing is the outcome of Stephanie's negotiations with General Hale. After the negotiations, General Hale will assist the intelligence department in its work, but Stephanie also wants to know what position Salomon has assigned to Ruby. General Hale wants to hear Salomon make a commitment; if Ruby's situation cannot be resolved, the previous negotiation terms may very well be nullified.
She left after a short while, but before leaving, she asked Salomon to make a decision as soon as possible and to consider the issue of General Hale's and Ruby's authority. There was really nothing to consider. Salomon demanded that General Hale only have limited authority and be contacted only through a single channel, while Ruby would be placed as a hostage inside the Immortal City.
Stephanie glared at him and left without looking back.
"What's wrong with her?" Salomon asked.
"I do not have the ability to read minds, my lord," Constantine replied honestly.
The reason the Royal Guard lacks magical talent is that Salomon used his own genome to perfect them. He selected genetic fragments suitable for the Royal Guard from the wisdom of genes bestowed upon him by the Earth Mother. This mysterious genome, designed by the Earth Mother, was originally intended to prevent Salomon from being corrupted, allowing him to generate magic on his own without needing to refine his life force.
However, Salomon always felt that the Earth Mother had gone a bit too far, granting the Royal Guard resistance to astral energy with just a few genetic fragments. This wasn't surprising, given that the Earth Mother had orchestrated the first God Destruction Movement. To prevent her creations from repeating the same mistake, the Earth Mother had to take precautions. Even Salomon himself only understood what he was with the help of the Earth Mother and Lady Maya Hansen.
Honestly, Salomon felt like he was a pot of magical chop soup, and he often joked about it.
The overwhelming exclusivity granted by the genetic fragments prevented the Royal Guard from being influenced by astral energy in terms of mind and body, while also preventing them from fully utilizing their pre-modification talents. Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Salomon's bestowal of powerful bodies and high-tech equipment upon the Royal Guard solved most problems; their limited spellcasting talent was negligible. Or rather, the Royal Guard's strong exclusivity was precisely what Salomon needed; only in this way could he ensure his most powerful Royal Guard would never betray him—both a weakness and a strength.
Salomon vaguely heard the witch's call, and he walked out of the room wearing slippers.
"Remember to buy some Provençal spices," Bayonetta told Salomon to go to the supermarket to buy seasonings. She beckoned Constantine, who obediently walked over with his head down, careful not to let his pointed helmet poke the expensive crystal chandelier. Standing three meters tall and clad in power armor, the Guardian felt somewhat restricted inside the apartment, so he usually stood outside, subject to the Sorority's pointing and whispering. Bayonetta said to Salomon, "Let Constantine accompany you for a walk, otherwise you might not be back for a while."
"I'm just planning to wander around Manhattan for a bit and I'll definitely be back before dinner," Salomon said. "I need to check on the construction in Clinton. There are too many people slacking off right now, and at this rate, I don't know when they'll ever get the keel out."
"Hmm, anything else?"
The witch narrowed her eyes, a mocking glint in them, as she noticed Salomon trying to get behind the Royal Guard.
"And then there's the legal paperwork with some holdouts at the law firm," Salomon said, pulling out a document from the Nelson-Murdoch law firm. Salomon had promised to increase the compensation for the tenants, but Matt Murdoch clearly couldn't handle some ordinary people who only wanted to get a bargain; he could only resolve the issue through negotiation. This also caused the keel-digging work to be intermittent, as people would occasionally jump into the construction site demanding more compensation.
"I've given enough compensation, but some people still want more."
"Anything else?"
Constantine thought for a moment, then took a step to the side, being careful not to step on the Cheshire Cat that was rampaging through the restaurant.
Salomon glared at him fiercely, but Constantine pretended he hadn't seen anything.
After all, this was a matter of the monarch's family affairs, not within the scope of the Royal Guard's duties. Moreover, the Royal Guard carried fragments of the monarch's genes; in a sense, the Royal Guard were Salomon's children. Even if the witch pointed at the Royal Guard's heads and reprimanded them, Constantine could not refute her as long as she did not make any decisions involving military matters.
Diana walked past the guards with amusement, pleased that someone could still command the tyrannical guards.
"It's too conspicuous, Bayonetta. The Royal Guard shouldn't be in front of ordinary people, or it will cause panic."
“You’ve forgotten the most important thing, Salomon,” Bayonetta said with a laugh. “Remember to invite Wanda Maximov over for dinner. I already called her a few minutes ago and told her you’d be picking her up. I’ve arranged everything for you, you’re welcome.”
Salomon had no idea when the witch and Wanda had become so close, even inviting her to dinner at his house. But since Bayonetta had already invited him, he had no choice but to comply.
"Remember to buy spices from Provence, my dear."
Salomon put on his shoes, waved, and left with his guards and the androids responsible for security. Since he was going to Wanda's apartment, bringing his own bodyguards wasn't a problem; the only question was who would protect whom if danger struck. As for the rest, he could delegate it—the law firm could handle it with a check, but before signing, Salomon would have to fire a few magazines at the residents' windows to make sure no one thought he was easy to bully.
I doubt anyone would think that way.
At least Matt Murdoch wouldn't think that way, because Salomon had already done it before informing him.
