Chapter 806 The Masked Sage
Chapter 806 The Masked Sage (Second Update)
The angels surrounding the boy were at least mid-level angels, their glowing wings and halos enveloping the entire fountain square, completely dispelling the shadows. But this brightly lit, sacred scene did not bring any relaxation. The boy wanted to say something witty to buy time, but the sage had no intention of listening.
He waved his hand, then immediately thrust out his spear, whistling sharply as it cut through the air, towards the boy. Surprisingly, the sage's first attack was blocked by the four cards the boy threw. However, the boy was also in trouble; his protective magic was as thin as paper before the spear, only slightly deflecting its trajectory.
Before he could catch his breath, the sage's next attack had already arrived.
The boy scrambled to the ground to dodge the attack, and when he seized the opportunity to throw his card in retaliation, the card, imbued with his power, was easily shattered by a white peacock tail feather. The boy was speechless with astonishment. Before encountering Bayonetta and Salomon, he had already fought against some lower-ranking angels, and those enemies he defeated proved that his cards were effective. Yet, his power was powerless against the white-robed man before him; his attack had only created an opportunity for the man to strike back.
The boy scrambled to avoid the attacks; the sharp spear nearly shattered all the paving stones in the fountain square, and the gust of wind whipped up by the spearhead stung and bled his skin. The angels hadn't yet made a move, seemingly observing an execution.
His life was like a candle flickering in the wind; he couldn't withstand any more attacks, and he was about to die.
Just as the golden spearhead was about to pierce the boy's eye, a deafening noise and blinding white light suddenly exploded in the fountain square. Both the sage and the boy couldn't help but close their eyes to avoid damaging their senses with the excessive stimulation. However, even closing their eyes couldn't stop the blinding light from leaving a terrible shadow on their retinas. The boy could see and hear nothing.
He suddenly felt a terrifying heat erupt around him, followed by the horrifying sound of metal colliding and rubbing together. Hot, viscous liquid with the scent of rosemary poured down like a torrential downpour, and the smell of ionized air filled his nostrils.
"What kind of adult would bully a child?" Bayonetta pushed up her glasses from the rooftop, her tone mocking. The boy felt himself being suddenly pulled up; a cold wind lashed his face, snapping him out of the dizziness from the noise and bright light. Once he regained consciousness, he immediately realized his predicament and let out a terrified scream—he found himself on a rooftop, having been transported from the fountain square, and Bayonetta was grabbing him by the collar, dragging his feet off the ground. Beneath the witch's feet, the corpse of an angel flowed blood, slowly emitting golden light.
The boy immediately began to struggle, shouting, "I'm not a little kid!"
"You decide, little thing." The witch readily released her grip, tossing the boy onto the roof. Her gaze shifted to the battle in the plaza. Salomon, clad in golden armor, and the sage in white robes wielded their weapons and moved with speeds imperceptible to the naked eye, the piercing clatter of their weapons causing the tiles of the surrounding houses to tremble.
"Who on earth was that?" the boy asked, rubbing his sore bottom, still shaken. "How could that person summon those ugly monsters?"
"The Sage. As far as I know, the last Sage should be dead." The witch placed her finger on the trigger, her vigilance heightened. Her expression remained nonchalant. "Aren't you very powerful, little thing? Shouldn't those monsters be your subordinates?"
"Shut up! This time it was my fault for being careless!" The boy jumped up. "I have no idea why they said that, it's none of my business!"
"Really?" Bayonetta chuckled and fired a shot to her side. Angels continued to swarm in; she still had her own battles to fight. "Little one, then let me see what you've got!"
Her and Salomon's surveillance initially went smoothly; the witch and the sorceress heard everything clearly, from the angel's appearance to what the angel said to the boy. Although it was unclear why the angel called the boy "Lord," Salomon could deduce that the mastermind behind the angels was worried that this boy, who called himself "Loki," was heading to Finnbowent—in the boy's memory, the sorceress had witnessed his battle with the angels, though at that time Salomon had worried it was a hoax, a deliberate revelation by the boy, or a false memory planted in him by the mastermind. There were countless examples of people making wrong decisions based on others' flawed memories; Salomon had long since learned those painful lessons.
Things only started to get out of control when the sage appeared.
The last sage was dead—Baldr, his biological father, killed by Bayonetta's own hands. Salomon was absolutely certain, and the documents in Kamar-Taj's library also proved it: Baldr, who possessed one of the Eyes of the World, was truly dead and could never be resurrected. Recognizing that the attacker of the boy was a sage, the arcane mage urgently activated a teleportation spell, throwing him and Bayonetta near the boy. He was responsible for blocking the sage's attacks, while the witch dealt with the angels; their teamwork was quite excellent.
"Unregistered spellcaster!" Salomon's title for his enemy was quite distinctive. "In the name of Kamar-Taj and the Sorcerer Supreme, you are under arrest! Resistance means death!" As sword and gun clashed, he activated the explosive gun beneath his arm armor, large-caliber bullets spitting flames as they flew towards the sage. The witches and sages share the same source of power—magic derived from the Eye of the World—therefore, each witch's spell has a corresponding version among the sages.
Witches possess "Witch Time," while sages possess "Swift Light."
Salomon can prove this is true, otherwise how could those launched bombs explode in the sage's hands?
Taking advantage of the opportunity, the arcane mage activated the jet engine, lifted his armored leg, and kicked the sage away.
"There's something called a mass fuse." The bomb blasted the sage's hand, leaving it covered in blood, but it didn't cause any further damage, as if the sage's gloves were harder than the alloy plates of a light armored vehicle. In the arcane mage's eyes, both the sage's robes and the protective spells cast upon him radiated a strong magical aura.
Although the exact effects of the magic haven't been deciphered, and there's no time to find a specific counter-spell, the Holy Sword can always break these spells through brute force. The Sage's flawless gilded spear is covered in slash marks; there are few weapons in the world that can compare to the Holy Sword, and the Sage's spear is clearly not one of them.
"As far as I know, the Sage race possesses extremely advanced technology. How could you be unaware of something like this?" The sorcerer pointed his sword at the Sage. "I remember Kamar-Taj completely destroyed the Sage race's bloodline. Where did you come from? Or are you a newly cultivated Sage?"
"Who are you?" the sage's voice was slightly somber. "What is your relationship with the witch?"
"She's my girlfriend. It's a pity I can't invite you to our engagement party, because you're about to die," the sorcerer replied. "I am a sorcerer of Kamar-Taj, what do you say?"
Salomon felt the sage's gaze fixed on his face from behind the mask, seemingly dissatisfied with the answer. The sage responded silently, taking out three magnificent white peacock tail feathers and tossing them into the sky. Accompanied by a short incantation, a golden portal suddenly opened, and an enormous four-elemental angel, a two-headed dragon representing the fire element, [Perseverance], arrived in the real world.
"That's a bit much," Salomon couldn't help but complain. "In that case, I'll have to call in some outside help too."
