Chapter 867 Emergency Aid

Chapter 867 Emergency Aid (First Update)

Mycroft Holmes was no ordinary civil servant; to some extent, he represented MI6, MI5, and the Cabinet Secretary. Sir Arnold, the honorary Chancellor of Oxford University, frequently dined with Salomon because of Mycroft's recommendation. Under Mycroft's persuasive words, the aging Sir Arnold had come to believe that Salomon would become "one of his own" in the future.

Without this power and access to information, Mycroft would never have been able to remove Salomon's planted spy in such a short time and guide Sherlock Holmes to the final answer. However, he hadn't anticipated what a powder keg this final answer would be; the vampires poured out of the sewers, seeking revenge on the overly arrogant Sherlock Holmes. This outcome was also unexpected by Mycroft, forcing him to call New York for help late at night and simultaneously dispatch the SAS to block the sewer exits. Only after Salomon arrived did Mycroft breathe a sigh of relief.

He constantly sought to assimilate Salomon, to win over this guy with powerful external support as one of his own. However, Salomon had already rejected him back when they were in school. This time, both Salomon and Mycroft had their own agendas, and both knew the other didn't want to make this public. But negotiation is a process of mutual compromise, and no matter how unwilling they were, they had to compromise with each other.

“This kind of conversation happened between Nick Fury and me before. All you want is a secret. You’ve been trying to find out my secrets ever since you met me, just like Nick Fury did when he first met me,” Salomon said, spreading his hands. “But you have a choice, Mycroft. I can show you the secret. Nick Fury is dead. I can only assure you that this has nothing to do with my secrets. Keep it a secret until I complete my mission.”

"So what are you planning to do? Fighter jets can't get into London's sewers." Mycroft relaxed, knowing that Salomon's appearance meant the mission was complete. What followed was a long wrangling session, but he was confident that his decades of experience in Whitehall would allow him to extract some secrets from Salomon.

Salomon knew he would cover it up, but Mycroft pretended not to know that Salomon knew and used it as a bargaining chip. Mycroft would never call the Prime Minister now to tell him that the nightmare in the sewers was about to erupt; just as Salomon hid many of his own secrets, Mycroft was also a man with many little secrets.

"I have my own way of doing things," Salomon said, pointing to his headphones.

He utterly despised Mycroft's petty civil servant tactics and narrow-mindedness, which was why he rejected Mycroft's offer of entry into the center of power through such means. As far as he knew, Mycroft frequented the Sackler Library, a library donated by the family behind Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin, even while still a student at Oxford. Mycroft and his civil servant cronies were involved in the licensing of opioids in Britain; otherwise, where would he have gotten the money to build an isolated island prison to hold his sister?

"Get your men out of the way. My men are taking over there, and I don't want those elite soldiers to lose their lives because of this misunderstanding."

“We still have time to talk, Salomon.” Mycroft gestured casually around with his umbrella. The arcane tensed as the tip of his umbrella brushed past Salomon. He knew Mycroft could pull the trigger at any moment. “This isn’t the place for conversation. Come with me; a warm fire and sherry are more suitable for this topic.”

"Sorry, but I'm not so cold-blooded as to sit back and enjoy myself while my soldiers bleed on the front lines. In that respect, I'm quite different from the British," the sorcerer replied coldly. He didn't mind exposing his weaknesses in the negotiations first; for him, resolving this matter was more important than anything else. The SAS were currently blocking their path, and the elite soldiers wouldn't leave until Mycroft gave the order. Clearly, Mycroft wouldn't let any opportunity to win the negotiations slip by. He stood there with an inscrutable smile—the current situation was that Mycroft was using the lives of the SAS to blackmail the merciful Salomon. If Coulson's squad, who had witnessed Salomon's brutality, knew this, they would be both amused and exasperated. Especially Skye, now called Daisy Jensen, she might even muster the courage to punch Salomon in the face.

"Your sympathy always comes out of nowhere, Mr. Damonette."

"A veteran who has participated in many world-saving operations, Mycroft! This is not compassion, but a reluctance to waste such resources."

Salomon's sudden change of attitude earned Mycroft's repeated nods. "I've said before that you're very talented, and it seems that's true. You're also in a moral vacuum now, and you're adapting quickly. If you don't like sherry, we can sample some wines from the cellar. Or would you like to visit a manor in Oxfordshire?"

"This is my second time here," Wanda told Constantine. The sorority's heavy-armor squad followed behind her, but apart from Wanda, the others weren't very talkative, so she had to find a topic to discuss herself. "There weren't this many vampires last time. Where did these guys come from?"

Constantine said in a muffled voice, "According to the files..."

"I already knew what the files said, I was just curious if vampires could really reproduce so many times?"

"In fact, ghouls, werewolves, and vampires belong to the same bloodline. Therefore, when only a thin layer of blood is passed down, the ugly creatures we see are born." Constantine walked forward, hunched over. "I'm clearly not suited for this environment."

"Go a little further ahead, you need to guard the key routes," Aura interjected. "We need to complete the mission as soon as possible. As for the SAS, send them ahead to scout ahead."

Salomon was very unhappy. Although he didn't show it, that didn't mean he wouldn't settle accounts with Mycroft.

The vampires in the London sewers weren't a major problem for the elite Immortal City. The Immortal City's gunships, on their return journey, carried a few unfortunate souls, including SAS members abandoned by Mycroft. They had witnessed the horrific deaths of their comrades at the hands of vampires for failing to receive orders. At Constantine's urging, they boarded the gunship, now knowing who was responsible for the tragedy and eager to avenge their fallen comrades.

Mycroft clearly hadn't expected that the SAS's loyalty would prove so vulnerable at this moment.

Salomon pressed him firmly into the armchair. This was Mycroft's apartment in the West End, and Salomon, having followed him there, wasn't worried about an ambush. Constantine had already informed him of the situation through the communications system, and Salomon had also given Constantine a recording of his conversation with Mycroft, instructing him to play it for the SAS members. "A soldier's loyalty is only given to demonstration, Mycroft. Guys who sit in offices all day won't understand this kind of sentiment." He shoved a glass of sherry into the civil servant's hand. "Think about how to solve this problem."

“But I don’t think the conflict needs to escalate to this extent. This is a country with laws. You always forget the role of power, Salomon.” Mycroft calmly took a sip. “You still haven’t told me what you plan to do with my brother. Please continue, I’m listening.”
