Chapter 922 The Interrogation Room and the Little Secretary
Chapter 922 The Interrogation Room and the Little Secretary (Second Update)
The Immortal City's methods for obtaining intelligence weren't limited to simple torture, as some individuals could endure extremely cruel physical torment while maintaining unwavering conviction—qualities that even interrogators would respect. However, the ultimate goal of interrogation was to obtain intelligence, regardless of the means employed. Thus, the staff of the bio-genetic laboratory, who had just gained a preliminary understanding of the Skrull brain, came in handy.
In the past, S.H.I.E.L.D. used machines to modify memories.
It was an extremely cruel surgical machine that repeatedly stimulated certain neurons in the brain with electrical currents released through extremely thin probes. When the patient tried to recall the memory, the extreme pain and the repetitive stimulation would cause the neurons to redirect to another memory. Agent Coulson had undergone this surgery, but the reason the Immortal City abandoned this surgical machine was not because it was inhumane, but because the practice was both crude and unreliable. Patients could still potentially recover their memories, just like Agent Coulson. The theory behind the surgery was as flawed as lobotomy in the last century; its only advantage was that it seemed slightly cleaner and more hygienic than the ice pick therapy used in lobotomy.
Thanks to the neuroscience research of the Immortal City and Wakanda, synaptic nerve sensors used to direct powered armor operations have been applied to interrogation. Through sophisticated and precise surgery, interrogators can question hypnotized subjects, uncovering memories buried deep within neurons—this procedure is not without side effects; the vast majority of subjects do not survive, and even those who do often become mentally impaired through repeated and prolonged questioning and stimulation. However, sometimes the value of a piece of information far outweighs the life of the subject, and interrogators must resort to this method when absolutely necessary.
While the interrogators suffer greatly from the drugs that stimulate their thinking abilities, causing them to lose control of their physiological instincts, the interrogators are not entirely at ease either. Most of these interrogators are individuals with potential personally discovered by Salomon. In the magical world, "potential" means having talent but not enough to cross the threshold into the world of mystery, and can only stimulate their brain's potential through rituals and drugs. Salomon personally planned every detail of the rituals and drugs to give the interrogators specific abilities. Without this step, even if the interrogator is lying on an operating table, it is difficult to get any information. Only by infiltrating the other person's mental illusion and breaking down their subconscious defenses can information be successfully obtained.
When Stephanie's secretary received the order, she nervously continued down the dungeon.
After a tedious security check, dozens of doors appeared before her, each leading to a narrow passageway encased in gray concrete. Just as she stepped through one door as instructed, the secretary was immediately startled by a roar emanating from the dark depths of the passageway. With the roar, the heavy iron door beside her slammed shut, and hundreds of different voices speaking in languages she couldn't understand erupted from the single small window in the door.
A green arm, covered in scars and with flipped-up nails, grabbed the secretary's sleeve and forcefully pulled her over.
Through the crack in the small window, the secretary saw in horror what was being held captive behind the iron gate. It was her; she saw her own狰狞 (zhengning, meaning ferocious or hideous) face staring directly at her through the iron bars. After a second of stunned silence, the secretary screamed—although she was also an heir to a Hydra faction, Dr. Lister had never revealed any of Hydra's secrets to her. Just like Gideon Malik's protection of Stephanie, the secretary remained somewhat naive even knowing her family was part of Hydra. Accompanied by the whistling sound of a blunt weapon and a scream close at hand, the secretary felt the thing pulling her disappear. She quickly opened her eyes and saw a soldier wearing black bulletproof armor, his face completely covered by a helmet and respirator, standing before her with a baton in hand.
"Ms. Malik... wants me..." she stammered as she finished speaking.
The guard nodded indifferently, then banged his baton on the iron gate to signal the prisoners to be quiet.
"Don't worry." Although the guard's voice was lower after using the respirator, the secretary could still tell it was a pleasant female voice. "Don't go near the cells. These green-skinned bastards will do anything to get out. Stay with me and don't get separated. If you get caught, I can't guarantee your safety. What's your name?"
"Diana Lister," the secretary sniffed. "Should I use her middle name?"
"No, no need, this is enough," the black-armored guard said cheerfully. Although she couldn't see his expression, the secretary was sure he was laughing at her foolishness and cowardice, which made her blush and speechless.
The guard invited Diana into the patrol car and drove her deep into the dungeon. Afterwards, the secretary couldn't remember what she had seen, as everything along the way was almost identical, especially in the dim light; she couldn't even make out the painted numbers on the walls. It wasn't until the armored guard pointed it out that she realized she had arrived at her destination. The secretary thought the shock was over, but upon reaching the one-way glass of the interrogation room, the secretary, who had never witnessed such cruelty, nearly fainted from the horror of the interrogation—from the green alien with its brain opened to the interrogator in a white robe whose expression was contorted with pain, it was a terror that Dr. Lister's granddaughter found difficult to bear.
Interrogating Skrulls is a challenge for interrogators.
Before the destruction of their homeworld, the Skrulls, there existed a faction of spellcasters within Skrull society. This proves that the Skrulls possess psychic potential, and given their similar origins to humans, some Skrulls possess extremely powerful psychic abilities. When facing Skrulls who have mastered these powerful psychic abilities, interrogators who have acquired mind-reading abilities through rigorous rituals and drugs are somewhat ineffective.
Therefore, a standard procedure was established.
The interrogators work in groups of three. One interrogator infiltrates the mind of the person being interrogated, while another pulls the first one out if necessary. If the second interrogator's intervention is not timely enough, resulting in both being controlled by the person being interrogated, the last interrogator, armed with a weapon, is responsible for killing the first two to prevent the person being interrogated from escaping through their colleagues.
The scene the secretary witnessed was the torture of a Skrull who refused to divulge any information under any circumstances.
"You'll have the interrogation report in half an hour," the black-armored guard said. Beside him was a third interrogator, also dressed in a white robe. The secretary didn't understand why he was so vigilant while standing behind the one-way glass, but she still focused her attention on what the black-armored guard was saying.
"This is the second time this interrogation method has been used this week." As if in casual conversation, the black-armored guard revealed a somewhat valuable piece of information. "However, no alien can last three hours with Mitra, so be patient. The interrogator won't disappoint our lord; we'll soon know how many green-skinned bastards are still on Earth."
