Chapter 926 Distracting Attention
Chapter 926 Shifting Attention (Second Update)
"Then she can live." Stephanie calmly uttered the most bloody words. "Knowledge must be controlled. We cannot let the incapable know more, otherwise it will endanger us."
She glanced at her still-developing secretary, her gaze so terrifying that the blonde girl beside her couldn't help but tremble. Dr. Lister's granddaughter, Diana Lister, used to believe that the Immortal City was merely Hydra's superior organization, a deep government manipulating finance and government for profit, just like Hydra, JPMorgan Chase, the Rothschilds, the Rockefellers, and the Wallenbergs. For a Hydra employee, this job offered excellent career prospects, and given Hydra's deep integration with conglomerates, it was essentially working for a family business.
However, thanks to Stephanie's secrecy, Diana Lister maintained this perception until she saw Catherine and the chainsaw sword at the White House. Only when she stepped into the interrogation room did she realize how terribly wrong she was. Unbeknownst to her, a war raged behind a dark veil, with the Immortal City fighting against multiple terrifying enemies single-handedly. Both sides drew their daggers, bleeding each other dry, waiting for the opportune moment to deliver the fatal blow.
Compared to those tycoons, the Immortal City was far more ruthless, even to the point of being reckless. Almost all of its profits were poured into endless wars, with the sole purpose of killing its opponents, completely disregarding other factors. The master of all wars nodded, agreeing with Stephanie's words, "You're right, but don't frighten Diana any further; she's already scared enough."
"Unless you're planning to throw her into your own bed, it's best to maintain this ruthless mode of control." Stephanie had become increasingly harsh lately, especially towards her secretary; she seemed eager for the dimwit to finish her business and leave. "Don't blush, girl, that's absolutely not going to happen. Get back to work now, unless you want to put an adult diaper on you and then feed you a bottle of hot milk!"
The blonde secretary, Diana, a science student, ran away blushing, making sure to take her folder with her before leaving.
Once the office door closed, Stephanie approached. She braced herself on the desk, closing in on the arcane mage behind it. "So now you're starting to lie and claim to be an alchemical golem? I had no idea you took exams so seriously!"
"It's better than telling the truth. The Battle of Finnbowent has left too many people with psychological trauma." The sorcerer raised an eyebrow. He wasn't naive; he knew that many ordinary people suffered from "superhuman phobia" after the Battle of Finnbowent. Although he had ordered them to stand up, deep down they didn't easily overcome this obstacle, and they even became reserved when facing the Imperial Guard.
However, he didn't pay too much attention to it. The Immortal City didn't need to publicize its corporate environment; he only needed to ensure that such emotions wouldn't affect their work efficiency. Most of the survivors who personally experienced the Battle of Finnbowent were ordered to keep quiet to ensure that the existence of extradimensional beings wouldn't be revealed, but clearly, such orders couldn't erase the scars of the past.
The Immortal City desperately needs a group of psychologists, but no one is applying.
"And you all look at me like I've seen a ghost whenever I make a joke. Is my sense of humor really that bad? I don't like a dull work environment; it's torture. But that bottle of brandy did get given away as a gift, given my serious absences; only a sufficiently valuable gift would Sir Arnold help me. That cunning old dog, I just can't understand how he's survived so long. Oh! I almost forgot… check the New York City action reports to see if our special operations team took down that freak in the red and blue pajamas who calls himself Spider Boy. It's important; I'm worried that the idiot will be killed by our soldiers, and that would be terrible! I was originally planning to deal with him more gently, like neutering him…"
Stephanie planned to deal with the nagging monarch.
“Forced sterilization is by no means gentle, my lord,” she corrected Salomon’s misconception with a blank expression. “Just a freak, I don’t know why you’ve been thinking about it for so long. If you need him, we’ll kill him; if you want him as research material, he’ll be lying on Maya Hansen’s lab table tonight.” She said, “You should focus your attention on more important things, like South America.”
"Laura Crawford?"
"Camilla has already engaged with Trinity's mercenaries, and with the help of our spies, Trinity failed to stop Laura Crawford from boarding the plane to Peru," Stephanie said. "Next, we can resolve the issue through administrative means. As long as we use the name of the US government, we can mobilize the Peruvian government forces to do our bidding. I have already reprimanded Camilla, and she has assured me that she will absolutely not take action against the government forces."
“I promise, really!” Camilla assured Laura Crawford by the fire, her dark eyes reflecting the flickering flames. “If you want to escape Trinity’s pursuit, you must listen to us. Don’t complain about how we destroy historical sites, little girl; the Immortal City’s orders are for you to live. If you want to die, then finish your work in Peru first, and I guarantee no one will stop you then.”
"But you blew up the Sunstone!" Laura grumbled, poking at the canned food next to the fire with the stick in her hand.
"Not again!" Camilla rolled her eyes, and even Jonah by the fire couldn't help but cover his face and let out a long sigh. "Trinity has deployed armed helicopters, little girl!" Camilla could only repeat, "If we don't take action, you won't even have a chance to study it."
"I know, I just... okay, I'll stop complaining!" Laura Crawford glanced back. "We still need to figure out how to get out of here."
Beyond the fire's reach, the wreckage of the plane lay nestled in the dense undergrowth, the pungent smell of leaking fuel reaching even Laura, who could smell it from afar. Trinity's pursuit had been swifter than anyone had anticipated. Camilla, responsible for escorting her, opened the aircraft's door, using her RPG-7 to compensate for the small plane's lack of firepower—Trinity seemed to have also gained airspace clearance. Such a large-scale battle had broken out on the Peruvian border, yet the Peruvian government forces had not yet appeared. Fortunately, this wasn't Salomon's Gulfstream private jet, but rather an older light propeller plane—however, its wings were still torn apart by the machine guns of the armed helicopter. Forced to make an emergency landing in the rainforest, she, Jonah, Camilla, and Camilla's five men had to proceed on foot to their target location.
Tomorrow morning, they will set off with fuel, food, and weapons, traveling two hundred kilometers while remaining concealed, seeking an opportunity to request aid from the Immortal City. All they need is a single assault transport boat; all problems can be solved.
