Chapter 945 Returning to the Human World
Chapter 945 Returning to the Human World (First Update)
Salomon, posing as a wealthy Jewish businessman, was part of a family business primarily in the energy and banking sectors. He was responsible for the banking operations within the family and was a relatively late-in-line direct descendant in the line of succession. His trip to Washington was primarily to discuss a secret deposit deal with a congressman, and through the congressman's introduction, he met his target. Impersonating the real Jewish businessman was easy; he was currently fast asleep in the trunk of his car—first, he used a sleep spell to disable all security, then dragged the businessman from his lover's bed, injected him with a sedative, and stuffed him into the trunk. He even kindly fed him some nutritional gruel to ensure he wouldn't starve; others wouldn't have been so kind. After doing all this, Victor von Doom went to wake the security team, while Salomon went to find the necessary documents and, incidentally, gave the charming Latina woman a kiss.
"Honey, why did you change your toothpaste?"
"I like mint flavor today."
The entire process, from selecting the target to the disguise, was executed with practiced ease, prompting Victor von Doom to wonder where Salomon had learned these skills. He was certain it hadn't come from the Kamar-Taj Library, otherwise Salomon would have used illusion magic. This question didn't trouble him for long; he remembered Salomon's participation in the Battle of New York and immediately understood.
"Driver," Salomon said, slowly opening the wine cabinet in the back of the limousine, pleased with his owner's discerning palate. He drew out the order, "I think we're going to be late. If you let me miss this fare, I promise you'll be driving a taxi. Do you know how much taxi drivers in Washington make a month?"
"Aren't you taking this a little too seriously?"
"You've never been rich in your life, Viktor von Doom. Although you've never cared about money, your past poverty has a very clear influence on your current behavior." Salomon poured Viktor von Doom a glass of wine and then passed it through the window. "Do you know how much it would cost to buy that Latina woman with a butt so big she could sit on a martini for a year? And she's married, and I'm sure her wife has a long-term lover too. That doesn't even include the jewelry and real estate she'd be given away. A single trip to a Pacific island for sunbathing could support a family of three for a year. Many people work their whole lives and still can't earn that much, living on cheap, mass-produced food and unable to even resist disease." Salomon poured himself a glass of red wine. "That's your weakness. You've spent the first half of your life as a poor student; you can never display the arrogance and wastefulness cultivated from a life of wealth. I've been professionally trained so that anyone with equal wealth and social status would consider me one of them. Otherwise, I would have chosen a more exciting task—having you chat with those idiotic politicians. I hope you remember the process. I'll do my best to stall the target, but remember—"
"Arrogance? You mean playing yourself?" Victor von Doom said coldly, downing his glass of red wine in one gulp. To be honest, he didn't particularly like the dry red, but he didn't show it, instead tossing the glass into the bushes outside the car window. "My own inventions are enough to get the job done; I don't need magic."
"Magic can't feed your people, and neither can your little ones. You need me. You need to see how I run a kingdom and feed so many people. It's okay, you'll see. I don't even need to show my face."
While Salomon was engaging in perfunctory exchanges with a group of politicians, and Victor von Doom was struggling to crawl through the ventilation ducts while plotting how to open the safe, Camilla, far away in South America, finally arrived at their destination with Laura Crawford. The Immortal City agents who came out to pick them up in a pickup truck only saw a group of savages carrying weapons and supplies—"We're lost," Camilla casually glossed over the hardships of their long journey. Laura Crawford and Jonah, after settling in, ate a large meal and then returned to their respective rooms to sleep soundly.
Camilla, fighting off sleep, told the agent, "I need to contact the Immortal City. We've caught Trinity by the skin of our teeth."
"The medical team thinks you should rest, and I agree." After mapping out their route based on Camilla's description, the intelligence agents were surprised to find that their route repeatedly overlapped with that of Trinity's mercenary teams. Furthermore, Camilla's team also narrowly missed the Immortal City's search and rescue team. Seeing that Camilla wouldn't back down, the Immortal City agents finally revealed a small part of the truth. "The radio is over there; hopefully, you still remember the communication code. Camilla, to be honest, Trinity has caught you red-handed."
"What does this mean?" Camilla asked. The tropical rainforest is an obstacle to satellite detection, and with current technology, it is difficult to find even a few scattered humans in the rainforest. Camilla relied on GPS and a compass to lead the team out of that green hell, and everyone was terribly hungry.
"Trinity arrived before you. They bribed local drug dealers with weapons and dollars to act as informants. They must have seen what happened when you were brought back today. We can't distinguish between the locals and the drug dealers. It's really... Anyway, I need you to get some rest because the drug dealers or Trinity could launch a surprise attack. We must be prepared to survive until the reinforcements from the Immortal City arrive."
"I know the drug dealers here, don't worry."
"Wow, that's even worse. I guarantee they're no longer your friends." This agent clearly had some understanding of South American anti-government forces. Although all of them were resisting oppression, South American anti-government forces were known for their brutality, often colluding with figures like drug traffickers and arms smugglers in an attempt to overthrow the government. The result was predictable: they couldn't overthrow the comprador government, nor could they gain popular support. The agent pointed impatiently at the house, "If someone recognizes you, it won't just be Trinity coming after us; the government forces might also get involved. With our current weaponry, we're no match for the government forces. Our only heavy weapon is a single heavy machine gun!"
"Where are the arms crates?"
The agent pointed to a corner of the wall that was covered by clutter.
"Have you opened it?"
"Of course not, but the list says heavy machine guns."
"Thank you, I think this should be enough." Camilla rallied her spirits and forced a smile. She knew very well what "heavy weaponry" meant in the context of the Immortal City; it meant the armory contained a bomb-propelled gun, and the Peruvian government's armored vehicles would be no match for such a terrifying weapon. Coupled with the anti-tank missiles she still had in the jungle, Camilla was confident she could hold out until reinforcements from the Immortal City arrived.
