Chapter 972 The Dark Book

Chapter 972 The Dark Book (Second Update)

"Who are you?" Elias Morrow's eyes widened. He hadn't even noticed this woman standing next to his nephew a few minutes ago. A sense of impending trouble washed over him, and Elias wished he could hang up and return to his cell immediately. He gestured to Robbie Reyes, demanding an explanation.

“I’m the troubleshooter, Mr. Elias Morrow. Let me tell you what happened.” Wanda sat down in Robbie Reyes’s seat. “That machine certainly seems to break the laws of physics, but nothing in the world can be created from nothing; equivalent exchange is the most basic concept. So that machine uses materials from outside our reality to create matter, and every time it operates, it has to pay a price. Dr. Lucy Power, Joseph, and the other researchers are all paying that price…”

“They’re all dead.” Elias Morrow glanced at his nephew, then nodded to Wanda. Although he didn’t know who the woman was, Robbie trusted him, and Elias didn’t want to say anything more. “There was an accident before, the police said it was an accident, but Joseph forced them to continue the research. They thought they were playing God, pushing the limits of the real world. The whole team died, and his wife too. They should have listened to me. The police said it was an accident, but I know Joseph killed them. I was so angry, I lost control… Girl, although I don’t understand what you mean, Lucy Bauer is dead. She couldn’t have killed anyone.”

"Why didn't you tell me about this?" Robbie Reyes asked.

Elias Morrow's actions were extremely brutal; Joseph is still in the hospital, in a coma for years, which is why he was convicted of attempted murder. Elias Morrow glanced away from the microphone in surprise, then noticed Robbie pointing to his ear—an inconspicuous flesh-colored earpiece hanging there. Wanda gestured, and the guard who had been watching the prisoner turned to face the wall. "Because you were just a child back then." A cloud of guilt clouded Elias Morrow's face. "I should have taken care of you and Gabe. I let you down, but this is my inner demon, it has nothing to do with you. I'm sorry, Robbie, it's my fault that Gabe..."

“Lucy Ball is indeed dead, Elias Morrow,” Wanda interrupted Elias Morrow’s self-pity. “But she was in debt, so she came back. You’re the only one alive who knew Lucy Ball. Think about it, where will she go, what will she want to do?”

"She'll go looking for that book." Elias Morrow took a deep breath, pulling himself out of his turmoil. He had to warn his nephew and this unknown woman before him. "I don't know what the book is, but it's said that the knowledge in it led them to design that machine, and that it contains all the knowledge anyone could need."

"Has everyone on the team read that book?" Wanda immediately became nervous.

“Yes, they were quite obsessed with that book.” Elias Morrow looked up at Robbie and Wanda. “That book is evil, and if I could, I wouldn’t want you two involved. Everyone who read it died, Robbie, and I don’t want you to end up like that. And you, girl, this isn’t something humans can solve; only God can exorcise that evil.”

"The Dark Book, it feels like the last time I heard that term was a hundred years ago," Nick Fury rambled on. "Actually, not a hundred years, that's just an exaggeration. I assisted your monarch in tracking down this book, but to no avail. It's said to be even more evil than the one Agent Coulson once obtained. We must find this book, Constantine."

“It’s me, not us,” Constantine said. “You can only sit in the office.”

"This can be considered a collaboration," Nick Fury responded cheerfully. "Joseph Bauer, the key figure Elias Morrow mentioned, must know the location of the Dark Book."

"Joseph Bauer is in a vegetative state." Constantine waved his hand, instructing the First Class Regiment of Fimbulb Winter, assembled on the rooftop, to deploy surveillance on Dr. Horton Radcliffe's residence as instructed. Gemma Simmons and Dr. Radcliffe successfully resolved Melinda May's persistent hallucinations following her "possession"—essentially rebooting her brain and adjusting her endocrine system. Fitz remained at Dr. Horton Radcliffe's residence to continue examining Melinda May, while Mike, Gemma Simmons, and Agent Coulson departed in a Quinjet. Judging from Gemma Simmons' expression, she seemed to have noticed something amiss with Dr. Horton Radcliffe's assistant, Ada, while Fitz tried desperately to conceal it. Constantine witnessed this farcical spectacle throughout.

"He's been in a coma for many years. Over those years, his brain will degenerate and eventually become as smooth as a fetus's. Even if I remove his brain, I won't get any useful information," Constantine said. "I've studied many cases of vegetative state patients, and I know what's going on."

"That's true, but Joseph Bauer woke up a few hours ago," Nick Fury said in the confident tone of his past role as director of S.H.I.E.L.D. "He's bursting with energy right now, thrashing around like a fish out of water!"

“We need to get there quickly; Joseph definitely knows something.” Wanda didn’t get into the Dodge as she left the prison. After Robbie Reyes got into the driver’s seat, she stood by the window and said, “But I don’t want you to show your face, Robbie. I want you to do something else like Daisy. You can stay here until the Immortal City agents come and take your uncle away, giving him a new identity. I suggest you stay here with him and enjoy the joy of being released.”

“This concerns Uncle Morrow’s innocence, Maximov. I don’t want him to be burdened with this kind of guilt.” Robbie Reyes looked up. Even living in the slums, he took life seriously. He obeyed the law, avoided contraband, and hoped to help his brother Gabe escape this quagmire through his efforts. “Let’s go together, find that book, and then settle this matter once and for all.”

"Do you want to show up at the hospital you burned down?" Wanda shook her head. "I'll call Daisy first and hope she makes good progress and manages to hack into S.H.I.E.L.D.'s database."

"I need to talk to you, Agent Coulson. We need to talk alone." As soon as he got off the plane, Mike requested a conversation with Agent Coulson, looking preoccupied. In truth, Mike wasn't sure whether he should tell Agent Coulson this. After all, the current director of S.H.I.E.L.D. required every employee to undergo regular lie detector tests, and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s lie detector technology was extremely advanced; even Black Widow might not pass. But he absolutely couldn't hide this from Coulson. Agent Coulson immediately realized that what Mike wanted to say was related to the previous mission, but he nodded anyway and found a blind spot in the surveillance cameras.

Only after ensuring that no one was listening in did Mike tell Agent Coulson what had happened at the research institute.

"You saw Daisy? Where is she?" Agent Coulson raised an eyebrow in surprise. He thought he would never see Daisy Jensen again. Hearing news of the girl he considered a daughter, joy briefly overshadowed his sense of responsibility. "Why didn't you bring her back?"

"She doesn't want to, and she's currently entangled with those people from the Immortal City—a witch and a super soldier, all extremely dangerous individuals." Mike shook his head, not telling Coulson about YoYo; he wanted to handle it himself. "This isn't something we can handle, Coulson. Once Salomon gets involved, it means the matter is extremely dangerous, beyond the capabilities of ordinary people. Leave this to them; we shouldn't interfere anymore, or a nuclear bomb will be hanging over our heads again. You know, he doesn't care about any damn Congress; he's capable of anything!"
