Chapter 977 Brownie
Chapter 977 Brownie (First Update)
The method for obtaining the manufacturing method of the lining material in those cabinets in the energy lab was given by Salomon, which is why Constantine went to great lengths to infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D.'s archives and evidence storage departments to search for documents. The knowledge that the Dark Book gave Joseph Bauer and Lucy Bauer allowed them to synthesize those magical crystals through scientific means, knowledge that was extremely important to the spellcasters of the Immortal City.
If we compare each spell cast by a spellcaster to a missile launched from a missile, then this crystal can be used as a missile fairing and a gyroscope.
The Immortal City needs to ensure that all spellcasters in the future world don't immediately go insane when absorbing energy from the non-material world, and to enhance their magical abilities to some extent—after all, not every school of thought has the long, stable mental training it does with Kamar-Taj. Even in Kamar-Taj, which places such emphasis on mental safety, there have been instances of arcane mages betraying and becoming corrupted throughout history; this lattice material can alleviate these problems to some extent.
In comparison, Salomon's problems seem rather insignificant.
Lorna Dayne glanced at her watch—a gift from Athena, extremely expensive, the kind even girls at private schools couldn't afford. Salomon had been inside the house for ten minutes, and so far, not a single gunshot had been fired; the street remained as quiet as ever. The absence of gunfire, beatings, or the sound of things being smashed worried young Lorna. Not so much for her brother's safety, but for the drug dealers. This silence could only mean that those Salomon had killed so quickly were probably now preparing a solution to pour into the bathtub and dispose of the bodies!
From childhood, Salomon was a dutiful older brother to all the children in the orphanage. Aside from gifting guns and knives at birthday parties, he was mostly a responsible brother.
"Fuck it!" Little Lorna took a deep breath and mustered her courage to jump out of the car. If Salomon was dealing with the body, she had to help; they were family. However, just as she reached the alley entrance, she stared in disbelief as Salomon walked out with a broad smile. There was no blood on him, and his clothes were unwound. He held a square, palm-sized, unidentified object in one hand and waved the other towards the alley. "What did you do?" Little Lorna walked forward in disbelief. "You really didn't kill anyone?"
"No way! Do you think I'd target an old lady who sells marijuana and OxyContin to pay for her cancer treatment, and her mentally challenged grandson who dropped out of school and can't do anything and has dyslexia? And that great-granddaughter who just started elementary school, she'll need tuition fees in the future!" Salomon pouted. "She's a genius. She knows the price per gram of every type of marijuana on the market and can roll cigarettes skillfully. That girl is definitely going to be very successful."
"Aren't you angry?" Little Lorna asked in surprise.
"It's not their fault for making money this way. This neighborhood is a fucking self-aware swamp. It won't allow the people here to rise in social class and escape this stinking place. It will slowly drain the life force of the people living here until they become a pile of mud. In this country. In a place like this, they can only try to survive—and they did. Even the bedbugs in their house are top-tier, specially trained bedbugs, the kind that can survive in the heart of the Sahara."
Salomon's expression was mostly helpless, with the remainder being pure anger. In this place, even the poor had to be ruthless enough to break the law to make money—not just selling contraband, but stealing, robbing, selling counterfeit goods, you name it. In fact, almost everyone who froze to death in winter because they couldn't afford heating was one of these poor people; it was horrifying in modern society. "This family is just a supplier to the school addicts; their profit margin isn't high. The real dangerous drug dealers aren't them. One trip to the hospital and that family will be dirt poor. Do you want me to watch them go destitute?" He poked little Lorna's head. "Don't laugh. Just because I let them go doesn't mean I'll let you go. You definitely won't be able to buy drugs anymore, and neither will the kids at your school. But they can still make money; the public school losers now have a plentiful supply of marijuana!"
"And what's that in your hand?" Little Lorna took the thing from Salomon's hand and examined it from all angles.
"Marijuana brownies, a traditional American treat, a homemade dessert baked by Mrs. Doris," Salomon said. "I also learned a recipe from her, which she told me was the best cigarette she ever sold."
Little Lorna tore open the foil packaging, pinched off a small piece, and put it in her mouth. After tasting it, she couldn't help but smack her lips, frown, and look disgusted.
How much did you spend?
"Three thousand US dollars. Electronic transfer, clean money, no need to go to the Indian casino to exchange it for chips for money laundering."
"Ugh, what a sucker from the rich neighborhood! Three thousand dollars for a plate of brownies made with hemp stalks! Fuck, that's pig swill! I know you're being kind, but they should at least show some sincerity, otherwise they'll just think you're easy to bully!" Little Lorna tucked the cake under her arm and started rolling up her sleeves to her elbows. She stormed past Salomon into the alley, the orange streetlights casting long shadows of her, like a freshly sharpened spear. "They actually think you're one of those white saints, it infuriates me! They have no idea how much your sympathy is worth! Watch how I get justice for you! Hey, Fee! Get out here! Don't run! Don't run!"
Salomon shrugged helplessly. He didn't know why such a good lesson had turned out this way. He stood there, watching little Lorna chase after him at lightning speed. She skillfully used the spear-throwing technique she had learned from Athena, smashing the brownie cake precisely onto the drug dealer's head. Even from 22.3 meters away, Salomon could clearly hear the dull thud of the brownie hitting his head. Just by seeing how the cake, tightly wrapped in tin foil, exploded, one could deduce how much force little Lorna had used to throw it. The guy who kept getting kicked in the butt by little Lorna but hadn't passed out was proof enough—it seemed he had overthought things. Little Lorna was never the one being bullied at school; she was the one bullying others. This was completely different from what he had worried about, otherwise he certainly wouldn't have brought that gun. He wanted to tell her classmates that she had a powerful family member, which was why he had fired the gun at the party.
It now seems like we overdid it.
"Wow! Thank you!" Salomon patted little Lorna on the shoulder. She had run quite a distance, and when she returned, her shoulders were covered in sweat, but thanks to years of exercise, she wasn't out of breath, and her complexion was still rosy. "Let's hurry back to the car, you'll catch a cold like this. I don't want you to get sick, otherwise I'll have to take you to the manor in Oxfordshire to recover."
"You're welcome." Little Lorna sniffed. "It is a bit cold now."
"If you don't mind, I'd like to ask a question."
"Ask away, we're family!" She shook her sweaty hair, looking quite happy.
"How did you develop such excellent cannabis brownie tasting skills, Ms. Lorna Dane? How would you like to answer that question?"
Little Lorna's face instantly turned deathly pale. "Oh shit!"
