Chapter 979 Making Tools
Chapter 979 Making Tools (First Update)
"This sounds like a question a mother should explain to her daughter."
“Yes, I assure you, your adoptive mother definitely addressed this issue. Ancient Greek educational philosophies are quite advanced even by today's standards.” Bayonetta let out a long sigh, as if trying to blow all her worries away. This situation is common in families with rebellious teenagers, and she never imagined such emotions would arise in herself. “But Lorna is too smart; she must have her own ideas. Darling, I know you treat Constantine like your own child, so how have you raised him?”
Salomon can give the answer without even thinking.
"Close combat, shooting, gene alchemy, bloody trials, infiltration and assassination, chemical brainwashing, mental adjustment, being thrown into a library... the final step, battlefield combat, those who survive are considered qualified." Constantine said softly, "Since you are so curious about the transformation process of the Royal Guard, I have no intention of hiding it from you, because I am already tired of your probing."
"You told me that he was like a father and a king to you."
“Yes, he is my king.” Constantine removed his helmet and placed it aside. The helmet's integrated communication system was connected to the powered armor, so even without the helmet, he could still operate it via neural synaptic connectors. “Actually, I wasn't the first Guardian to be successfully modified, but I was the first Guardian test subject to survive. I vaguely remember my comrades from the training camp, but only I survived, and I can no longer recall their faces.”
Constantine recounted the horrific facts, enough to drive anyone mad, with a blank expression.
On a planet covered in red sand, many figures, their memories blurred, stood side by side, all bearing wounds. Every day, their numbers dwindled. Constantine couldn't recall what they looked like, as if those memories had been deliberately erased during his mental rehabilitation. He only knew that these people had spent a long time with him in the training camp.
"In the monarch's words, the Royal Guard's bodies are incomparably pure and will never suffer the torment of aging, and their hearts are as indestructible as a giant fortress built of vibranium. Only in this way can the Royal Guard, who have become perfect humans, fight alongside him on the most terrifying battlefields and fulfill his grand dream."
"This doesn't sound like a responsible father at all." Nick Fury sneered through his nose. "Don't you have any desires? Money, women, power... How can you be human without desires and feelings? You're completely indifferent to what you've been through. I wonder if you have any thoughts of your own, Constantine."
"Of course I have my own thoughts. I have been granted a vast amount of knowledge—art, science, geography, politics… My Lord encourages me to think independently, for this is one of my uses—to walk beside Him and offer advice." Constantine looked down at the documents in his hands. Before him, shelves were piled high with gray boxes, almost touching the ceiling, each box incredibly heavy. Thanks to his superhuman physique, Constantine could effortlessly remove boxes that could only be taken down with a forklift.
The warehouse was dark, and the guards used their genetically modified eyes to read the text, numbers, and patterns on the documents.
These items were collected by S.H.I.E.L.D. during various missions. Many of them were items secretly stored in various bases after S.H.I.E.L.D. formulated the Slingshot Project—ostensibly to launch dangerous materials into the sun, but actually to quietly hoard them. The plan's creator is currently speaking with Constantine—due to the loss of the most critical logistics and administrative departments, and the loss of a large amount of data after the Hydra rebellion, the purpose of many items is unknown, so they are simply stored in blast-proof boxes, placed on shelves, awaiting the dust.
Constantine easily found what he was looking for; after all, there were very few boxes here that weren't gathering dust. He also discovered that the Berserker's Staff, an artifact of Asgardian magical technology, was stored here. He had seen descriptions of such items in the archives of the Immortal City, and information about them was also available in the power armor database. Unsurprisingly, Constantine found that the runes inscribed on the Berserker's Staff to ignite rage had absolutely no effect on him; his mind and body easily and firmly blocked the magical effects affecting his brain and body from reaching the impenetrable walls.
"People only use the word 'purpose' when describing tools."
"Isn't the answer obvious enough?"
"Well, you're quite pathetic, Constantine." Nick Fury took out his small bottle, opened the cap, and paid homage to the void. "Although we haven't worked together for long, I still pity you, and all those who embark on this path. I'm truly glad I only live for a hundred years at most, so I don't have to witness that monster-filled world of the future."
Constantine ignored Nick Fury's sarcasm, for short-sighted people could not comprehend a monarch's ideals. He switched communication channels and spoke into the microphone hidden in the collar of his power armor: "Daisy Jensen, I hope you've succeeded."
"Not yet! I can't believe I'm working with you guys!" Even though the half-blood hacker tried to lower her voice, it was still incredibly jarring in the empty old apartment, but thankfully the noise of cars outside drowned it out, causing the dust particles floating in the air to vibrate. Daisy Jensen couldn't say who she was angry at, or even if she should be angry—although Salomon's past behavior was utterly despicable (referring to the torture of her mother, Jia Ying, to obtain information about the afterlife and the Inhumans), Constantine had still been a great help. Besides, they were the professionals in this kind of thing; so many laymen at S.H.I.E.L.D. would only make things worse.
"I'm deceiving my friend! You need to consider my mental state! Or are you just as cold-blooded as your master?!"
"I need you to access S.H.I.E.L.D.'s management system."
"I know, I know, Gemma's on her way to see the house." She cautiously peeked out from behind the curtains. Sunlight streamed down from the other side of the street, stretching across the shadows cast by the surrounding buildings from right to left, and flashing across the dirty glass windows. "It's not easy to fool a smart person. I went through a lot to find this place, and I even deleted the recommended listings from the real estate agency to make sure no one else comes to see it."
There seemed to be a hint of smugness in her words, a feeling that had been quite rare since she left S.H.I.E.L.D. She could never forgive Coulson for accepting the Immortal City's method for dealing with the Inhumans.
Although many people have forgotten, she was a hacker before becoming an agent. "I studied her budget; her and Fitz's combined salaries could only afford to rent this place, so the guy I sent her was incredibly tempting. She's already called that poor landlord and said she'd come to see the place at four this afternoon, and she'll definitely come. Oh, I see her... Don't worry, I'll convince her."
Are you sure you can accept this approach?
"It was already a deception of me to cooperate with you behind Mike and Fitz's back, even if I hadn't done that... You know, I've already left S.H.I.E.L.D."
I can not understand.
Constantine couldn't understand Daisy Jensen's weakness and self-pity, but he didn't say it aloud, giving her ample time to think. He waited for her to convince herself. Sure enough, Constantine heard Daisy Jensen's soft whispers, muttering incoherent words, until finally, complete silence fell on the other end of the communication channel, until he heard the grating creak of unlubricated hinges and Daisy Jensen's awkward, rollercoaster-like laugh.
