Chapter 987 Mind Reading

Chapter 987 Mind Reading (First Update)

Constantine knew time was of the essence, and he hurriedly left after forcing Daisy Jensen off the assault transport.

He believed that with Wanda Maximov and Robbie Reyes present, the simple task of rescuing Elias Morrow couldn't possibly go wrong. However, reality proved worse than he imagined—Wanda Maximov and Robbie Reyes did find Elias Morrow's cell in Block E, but as they passed through a prisoner corridor opened by Lucy, Robbie Reyes noticed a very unusual prisoner. This prisoner didn't cause a ruckus in the open corridor like the other inmates, or attempt to escape and attack the guards; instead, he stayed in his cell reading. His unusual quietness drew Robbie Reyes' attention as he guarded against potential attacks.

Robbie Reyes recognized the tattoo on the prisoner's body and understood why he hadn't repeatedly attempted to escape like the others. The tattoo belonged to the Fifth Street Gang, a small gang on the streets of Los Angeles. They were not only responsible for Gabe Reyes's disability but also the initial motivation for Robbie Reyes becoming the Ghost Rider—he had killed all the Fifth Street Gang members outside the prison; Daisy Jensen first encountered him at one of his hunting parties. The prisoner now imprisoned was the only survivor; all the gang members outside were dead, which explained why he hadn't tried to leave.

"I have some things to do," he told Wanda and Elias Morrow. "I'll be back soon, I promise."

"We'll be waiting for you on the Wind One." Wanda Maximov didn't bother to investigate Robbie Reyes's unusual behavior; she was focused on completing the mission. However, when she and Elias Morrow arrived at the prison gates and met up with Agent Coulson and Agent Melinda May, they discovered that the giant aircraft Wind One, which had been there, was nowhere to be seen. In its place were police cars surrounding the entrance.

"Mike..." Agent Coulson called out to Wind One through his headset.

"Your location has been pinpointed, and the isolation pod is descending." Mike wasn't exactly thrilled. He hadn't expected the LAPD to arrive so quickly. If they continued to keep the Zephyr One in place, the few defenders on board would struggle to withstand the LAPD's arrival alongside the SWAT team. Therefore, maintaining the Zephyr One's air superiority and using the bulletproof isolation pod for evacuation was the best option. "Next time we should bring some SWAT team members, otherwise we'll always be retreating to 3,000 feet," Mike complained. "Just let us know when you're ready. Daisy's here; she'll descend with the isolation pod as support."

Daisy was pale and covered in cold sweat, but she still insisted that Mike take her down.

"No need," Wanda Maximov said.

She twirled her fingers and softly recited words that no one else could understand. Suddenly, all the police officers who had pointed their guns at them were astonished to find that their weapons had become lighter—pistols turned into frogs or hens, and rifles into fish or kittens. The entire standoff was thrown into chaos. Some of the more astute officers saw the SHIELD agents moving around and immediately pulled out Tasers and pepper spray and rushed over.

"Don't use anything that could be deadly, Wanda," Agent Coulson said to the witch. "I know you can do it."

"What is this?" Elias Morrow seemed startled by Wanda's performance, but no one was in the mood to answer his question. Wanda frowned, spread her fingers, and a huge pool of asphalt mud instantly covered the entire road surface. This hydrocarbon mud was sticky and slippery; many policemen's shoes were ripped off while running, and they fell onto the pungent, thin layer of room-temperature asphalt—luckily, the modified asphalt wasn't too sticky, preventing the victims from suffocating. But the problem was that this modified spell was too greasy; no policeman could stand up, not even by digging on all fours.

At that moment, the isolation pod of Wind One slowly descended, landing not far from Wanda and her group. Daisy Jensen hurriedly crawled out of the isolation pod.

"It's so good to see you again, Daisy." Coulson gently patted her shoulder. "Welcome home."

"I haven't agreed yet!"

"Stop joking, I know you," Coulson said with a smile. "Don't tell me you don't miss Simmons' afternoon tea; she's the only Englishwoman among us."

"Hey! We're still here!" A lucky SWAT officer waved from his patrol car, a plump white hen crouching at his feet. That was his gun; even after the commotion, he was still clutching it. "Who are you people?! What are these things, magic?"

"We're a government agency!" Coulson whispered to Wanda, then responded loudly after receiving the answer, "You can stand up and leave in twenty minutes. I'm sorry, I don't know if you'll need to change clothes afterwards!"

"Okay, then I'll sit here." The policeman seemed frustrated. "Next time you're on a mission, could you at least tell us beforehand? Don't you know how busy the police are?!"

"Mind reading, you can already cast spells instinctively, but because you don't know how to stabilize the spell's effects, you can only see some fragmented pieces." Long before she left the castle, her teacher had already been teaching her how to stabilize her talent. She studied very diligently, and even as the delicious bacon grew cold and could eventually be used as a knife, she was unwilling to miss a single word spoken by the person in front of her.

"In fact, what you're encountering is merely impurities floating on the surface of thought, a fleeting glimpse of the id, a bubble of thought in a state of ideology. The ego, processed by the superego, is the stable surface of thought—though this analogy isn't entirely accurate, you can think of the superego as the foam that always dissipates on beer, the id as the beer itself, and the ego as the surface layer your lips touch. Skim off the foam, see the id and the ego clearly, see the true thoughts of the person before you—that's the true purpose of mind reading. The most powerful mind reader is also the most powerful spy; no one in this world can hide any secret from you."

Wanda Maximov has always done this.

She always cautiously reached out her innermost thoughts to touch that layer of understanding, while most people would only feel as if their brains were being brushed by a light feather, unable to detect anything unusual. Even with just a fleeting touch, she gleaned enough information to make a judgment.

Robbie Reyes stumbled out of the prison, reeking of burning flesh. Black smoke billowed from his leather jacket, and embers smoldered in his eyes. It was clear to everyone what he had done. Wanda glanced at him from afar, then made her decision.

According to the mission report Constantine received, Wanda Maximov's mission did not end with any lighthearted banter; the final footage recorded by her body camera matched the report's contents. As everyone relaxed, preparing to wait for Robbie Reyes before transferring through the isolation pod together, Wanda's actions surprised everyone—she first shoved Elias Moreau into the isolation pod and locked it, then used magic to destroy the thrusters of the fourth unit. Everyone was shocked by her actions, as she acted without explaining herself to the others.

Both Agent Coulson and Daisy Jensen immediately distanced themselves from Wanda Maximoff.

"You've read the Dark Book, haven't you?" she demanded of Elias Morrow through the bulletproof glass. "Tell me, how exactly did Lucy Bower die! Robbie Reyes, stay there, don't come any closer, you can't beat me. Elias Morrow, tell me, what did you see in the Dark Book!"
