Mount & Blade: Rise from Impoverished Tenant Farmer

Chapter 10 Intercepting and Killing Deserters

"Speedy, stop him!" Walter shouted anxiously.

By now, it was completely dark, and the nearby trees had become blurred outlines. What difference was there between Rosius rushing out alone now and committing suicide?

A lean militiaman dropped his weapon and gave chase.

He was the fastest runner in the village, but now he realized that the figure in front of him was getting further and further away.

"How is this possible?"

"Speedy" slowed his pace unconsciously, his eyes filled with disbelief.

In those few short seconds of his dazed state, Luo Xu's figure was already about to disappear into the night.

At this moment, Luo Xu was running on the muddy road, the night wind blowing into his ears.

He was not blinded by anger.

The hoofprints are extending westward, indicating they intend to exit the village from the western entrance. There are villagers patrolling that entrance, which should slow them down.

Luo Xu changed direction and took a shortcut.

He crossed several fences and arrived at the western entrance of the village in a very short time.

The two deserters charged out on their horses, knocking the villagers who had been guarding the area to the ground.

Two burlap sacks were tied to each of the two horses, and the human figures on the sacks were clearly visible.

Luo Xu pursued relentlessly, his eyes bloodshot, almost grinding his teeth to powder.

The two deserters were so frightened by Luo Xu's sudden appearance that they trembled and hurriedly kicked their spurs to rush forward.

No matter how fast a person runs, they can't outrun a horse, and the distance between them quickly widened.

The two deserters would glance back every now and then, and only breathed a sigh of relief after confirming that Luo Xu couldn't catch up with them.

"Damn, how could that person run so fast?"

The pitch-black night had a significant impact on the two soldiers; although they had shaken off Luo Xu, they needed to keep their eyes fixed on the road.

Luo Xu knew he couldn't catch up this way, so he immediately turned around and rushed into the woods.

When he came to the woods to the west yesterday, he paid attention to the terrain. The country road to the west makes a big bend around the woods.

By simply walking straight through the woods, you can intercept the two deserters before they leave the bend.

Luo Xu raised his kite-shaped shield and charged wildly through the woods.

This is the only chance. If those two deserters manage to get off the bend, the hope of catching them will be extremely slim.

The woods were pitch black, and the roars of wild beasts could be heard from a distance.

Luo Xu did not slow his pace. The shield smashed through the branches blocking his path, the crisp snapping sounds echoing repeatedly.

Finally, a faint light appeared ahead—moonlight that wasn't blocked by the leaves.

We're almost there, the bend is just ahead!

Overjoyed, Luo Xu mustered all his strength for the final sprint.

The sound of horses' hooves came from not far to his right. He looked in the direction of the sound and saw two dark figures moving quickly, one in front of the other.

Luo Xu gritted his teeth, gripped his spear tightly, and charged out of the woods.

The deserter in front stared wide-eyed and rammed straight into the head of the spear.

The spear tip pierced through the cotton armor and into the flesh, causing the deserter to fall straight backward from his horse.

"Ding! Your polearm skill +3. Your polearm skill is now 3. Next level: 2/42."

"Ding! Your running skill +1, now your running skill is 8, distance to next level: 60/102."

At the same time, the spear shaft snapped in two with a "crack".

Luo Xu was startled.

Unexpectedly, the spear broke at this moment, and there was still a deserter behind them.

He had no time to think; he immediately threw away the broken spear, raised his shield, and rammed the horses behind him from the side.

The deserters behind only saw a dark shadow crashing into them and had no time to react.

"Bang!"

The immense impact sent Luo Xu flying two or three meters backward, while the deserter tumbled and crashed heavily to the ground.

A metallic taste filled Luo Xu's mouth, and for a second or two, he couldn't feel his body.

Pain throbbed from the very marrow of his bones. He shook his head and forced himself to stand up.

"Damn it!" The deserter also stood up, his hand already on the hilt of his sword.

Without the slightest hesitation, Luo Xu rushed over.

There was a sack at the feet of the deserter in front of him. If he used the person in the sack to blackmail him, Luo Xu would be in a passive position.

Just as the deserter fully drew his iron sword, Luo Xu arrived right in front of him.

The deserter hurriedly swung his sword, but Luo Xu blocked the blow with his shield and then knocked him to the ground.

The iron sword slipped from his hand and fell to the ground, but Luo Xu quickly picked it up.

Seeing that he was outmatched, the deserter got up and tried to run away.

However, he was not as fast as Luo Xu, and Luo Xu caught up and slashed him on the back with a sword.

The deserter screamed and fell to the ground.

"Please, don't kill me, I have a child."

His face was filled with fear, and his lips trembled uncontrollably.

Luo Xu glanced down at him, and the next moment he thrust his sword into his heart.

The iron sword entered the body much more smoothly than expected.

The deserter froze, collapsing to the ground, blood gushing from his wounds.

"Ding! Your one-handed skill +3, now your one-handed skill is 3, next level: 2/42."

"Ding! Your running skill +1, now your running skill is 9, distance to next level: 58/121."

Luo Xu drew his iron sword, his hands trembling uncontrollably. It wasn't from the fear or guilt of killing, but from the physiological reaction of his adrenaline receding.

He turned around and glanced around the vicinity, and seeing that both sacks were still there, he breathed a long sigh of relief.

After the first deserter was pierced by a spear, his continental horse, startled in the darkness, lost control and crashed into a tree.

The person in the sack must have been badly hurt, but at least they weren't dragged along by the horse.

Luo Xu, sword in hand, walked toward the sack on the second horse closest to him.

The bag trembled slightly, and a low sob came from inside.

He reached out to untie the rope, trying to keep his voice steady: "Sister Alina?"

The sack suddenly stopped shaking, and then a joyful voice came from inside: "Rossi, it's me!"

This is Sarah.

Luo Xu continued what he was doing and said softly, "I'll get you out right now."

The rope was untied, revealing Sarah's face.

Her face was covered in tears, and upon seeing Luo Xu, she became so excited that she stammered, "Luo...Luo Xu, I..."

"Are you alright?" Luo Xu asked.

Luo Xu's concerned tone brought tears to Sarah's eyes, and her voice trembled with sobs as she said haltingly, "My right foot hurts a lot."

"Is there any other place that hurts?"

"No, that's all."

"Then I'll go save Alina." After confirming that Sarah was conscious and out of immediate danger, Luo Xu turned to leave.

"Wait!" Sarah suddenly called out to Luo Xu, her body trembling violently with fear. "You...you mustn't stray too far from me, I'm scared."

Sarah sat on the ground like a frightened fawn. She looked at him with her deep green eyes, which were full of pleading.

Just then, a deep roar came from the distant woods.

Luo Xu glanced at the other sack, then at Sarah sitting on the ground trembling, then walked up to her and squatted down with his back to her: "Get on."
