Chapter 32 Wanjing Cries and Forces Wedding Date to Be Set

First paragraph

As dawn broke, Su Wanjing gripped her phone so tightly that her fingertips almost left marks on the screen.

She stared at the words "missed calls" on the screen, her eyes red like a rabbit's.

Chen Shanhe has been out of contact since last night after receiving a few phone calls, and she's feeling incredibly anxious.

When her phone rang, her hand trembled as she answered it, but upon hearing the busy tone, she quickly hung up and wiped tears from her pillow.

"Was he too busy to remember? Is there someone else with him?" She bit her lip, becoming more and more panicked the more she thought about it.

Grandpa Zhenshan heard the noise, pushed the door open and came in. He saw the wet stains on her pillow and frowned.

"Why are you crying? With Chen's personality, how could he forget you?" The old man sat on the edge of the bed and reached out to wipe away her tears.

Su Wanjing threw herself into her grandfather's arms, crying even harder: "He went to the provincial capital! There are so many women in the city, if he gets entangled with someone, will he ever be able to come back?"

She clutched her grandfather's clothes, her nails digging into the fabric: "I don't care! If he comes back, we'll get married right away! Once we're married, he can't leave again!"

Grandpa patted her on the back and sighed, "Silly girl, what's the rush?"

"I have to be anxious!" Su Wanjing looked up, her face streaked with tears, but her eyes were stubborn. "If he leaves again, I really can't take it! I can't sleep if he doesn't contact me for a day!"

Grandpa sighed and reached out to tuck the blanket around her: "The city is different from the town, he's bound to be busy. Don't worry, Chen isn't the kind of ungrateful person."

Su Wanjing shook her head, tears falling onto her grandfather's hand: "I'm worried! All those women in the city are prettier and more sensible than me. How can he not be tempted? Even someone like Wu Meiniang could entangle him, so wouldn't all those vixens in the city steal him away?"

She became increasingly aggrieved as she spoke, her shoulders shaking with emotion: "I just want to keep him tied down! Once we're married, with the marriage certificate binding us, he won't be able to go anywhere!"

Second paragraph

Grandpa was at his wit's end by her crying, so he turned around and went to call Wanjing's parents.

The couple had just gotten up when they heard their daughter crying about getting married, and their faces turned pale.

"Dad, try to persuade her not to be so willful," the mother said, holding her daughter's hand and trying to coax her.

Su Wanjing shook off his hand, her neck stiff with anger: "I'm not being willful! I just want to marry Chen Shanhe. Once we're married, he'll belong to me!"

The father frowned: "How can a marriage be settled so easily? We have to wait for him to come back so that both families can discuss it. The dowry and the banquet must all be clearly arranged."

"What are we discussing!" Su Wanjing raised her voice, but her tears fell even more fiercely. "He's back, and I'm going to throw a banquet! I want the whole town to know that he's my man, Su Wanjing's man! No one will dare to even think about taking him!"

She walked into the main room, pointed to Chen Shanhe's photo on the wall, and said in a trembling voice, "Look, he's made something of himself now, he's a miracle doctor in the provincial capital, and even more women will be after him! If I don't hurry, he'll be gone!"

Seeing her red and swollen eyes, her parents felt a pang of sadness. Her mother went over and hugged her shoulders, saying, "It's not that your parents don't agree, it's that we're afraid you'll be wronged. Chen is a good boy, but a marriage should be respectable."

"I'm not wronged!" Su Wanjing looked up at her parents, her eyes resolute. "As long as I can marry him, I can endure anything! Ask for less dowry, keep the wedding simple, as long as he comes back, I'll marry him in style!"

Her father sighed and patted her head. "Alright, your parents will do as you say. We'll set a date when Chen comes back, and we'll make sure you don't suffer any injustice."

Su Wanjing stared at her parents, then looked at her grandfather: "You both have to agree, no backing out! If anyone goes back on their word, I'll fight them!"

The three exchanged a glance and all nodded: "No backing out! Absolutely no backing out!"

Paragraph

Su Wanjing received the promise, tears still on her face, but the corners of her mouth quietly turned up.

She picked up her phone and dialed it directly without waiting for it to ring.

The call connected, and Chen Shanhe's voice came through: "Wanjing?"

"Chen Shanhe!" Su Wanjing's voice was choked with sobs, but very clear, "When are you coming back?"

It was a bit noisy on Chen Shanhe's end, and Murong Fangxiang's voice could be faintly heard: "I just finished a consultation, it will probably take about another week."

"A week?" Su Wanjing's voice rose instantly. "You're going to stay another week? I won't allow it! You have to come back as soon as possible!"

She paused, lowered her voice, and pleaded, "I've told Grandpa, Mom, and Dad that if you come back, we'll get married. We don't care about the dowry or the wedding banquet; you just need to come back."

There was a few seconds of silence on the other end of the phone, then Chen Shanhe's voice came through: "Okay, I'll do it as soon as possible."

Hearing the word "okay," Su Wanjing felt a weight lifted from her heart, but she couldn't help but whine, "You can't lie to me! If you dare to lie to me, I'll go to the provincial capital to find you! I'll go straight to your mansion and see how those women can still bother you!"

"I wouldn't dare lie to you." Chen Shanhe's voice softened. "I'll come back as soon as I'm done with my work, and we'll get married when I get back."

After hanging up the phone, Su Wanjing gripped her phone, made a victory sign at the air, and burst out laughing before her tears had even dried.

She ran to the mirror, tidied her hair, wiped her face, and whispered, "When you come back, I'll dress myself up beautifully so you can't bear to leave me."

As she spoke, she picked up her phone again and sent Chen Shanhe a voice message: "Chen Shanhe, don't forget, you promised me! You'd come back and we'd get married, no backing out!"

fourth paragraph

Just as Su Wanjing finished laughing, her phone rang again. It was a message from Murong Fangxiang, asking how she was feeling lately and mentioning Chen Shanhe's affairs in the provincial capital, saying that he was a highly skilled doctor and that many powerful and influential people sought his treatment.

Su Wanjing stared at the message, her heart aching and heavy. Her fingers flew as she typed: "I'm fine. We'll get married when Chen Shanhe comes back. If he meets other women in the provincial capital, you have to keep an eye on them for me and make sure they don't bother him."

After sending the message, she put her phone in her pocket and turned to go to the kitchen to prepare Chen Shanhe's favorite dishes.

As she picked vegetables, she muttered to herself, "No matter how beautiful a woman in the city is, she can't compare to me. Once we're married, you won't be going anywhere. You'll stay home with me every day. I'll cook for you, do your laundry, and let's see who else you think about then."

Just then, footsteps came from outside the door, and Wu Meiniang arrived carrying a basket of fruit.

Wu Meiniang walked in with a smile and saw Su Wanjing: "Wanjing, I heard you and Chen are getting things done? I've come to offer my blessings."

Upon seeing her, Su Wanjing instantly put down her shopping basket, stood in front of the door, and her eyes were as cold as ice: "I don't need you to deliver! My affairs with him are none of your business!"

Wu Meiniang's smile froze for a moment, then returned to its charming form: "Look at you, child. I just came to congratulate you. Chen has made something of himself, going to the provincial capital to become a renowned doctor. You'd better keep a close eye on him. Don't let him look down on you, a country girl, once he's established himself in the city."

Su Wanjing, hands on her hips and chin raised, declared, "I'm keeping a close eye on him! It's none of your business! He just loves me. Even if he goes to the provincial capital, I'll only ever be in his heart!"

Seeing her firm attitude, Wu Meiniang chuckled, put down the fruit, and turned to leave. At the door, she glanced back at Su Wanjing, a hint of amusement in her eyes, and muttered under her breath, "Just wait and see, this isn't over yet."

Su Wanjing closed the door, spat at the outside, and turned to Chen Shanhe's photo, whispering, "Look, she still wants to cause trouble. When you come back, we'll get married right away and see how she tries to bother you then. I'll go prepare the dowry now, and when you come back, I'll marry you in style."

Sunlight streamed in through the window, falling on her face, half of which was streaked with tears, and the other half with unwavering resolve.

A storm concerning the wedding has only just begun.
