Chapter 989 The Taste of Mom

(Departing today, arriving tomorrow, two chapters planned. Also, please add to your favorites, recommend, comment, and rate my new book.)

Xiao Wei said, "No, it's just a coincidence."

After saying a few nice things, Dean Cheng wasn't really angry; he was just trying to make money.

After hanging up the phone, Xiao Wei thought for a moment and then dialed Commander Hu's number again.

"Commander Hu, there have been some changes to the plans for the Hunhe River area. The warehouse will no longer be located there; it will be built in Zhangshitun. It was just finalized, so we'll have to trouble you to send some people over."

Commander Hu asked, "How big?"

Xiao Wei said, "1,600 yuan, and we also need to build an instant noodle factory."

Commander Hu said, "Wow, you guys are really capable, young man. Alright, where are you right now?"

Xiao Wei said, "Yes."

Commander Hu said, "Wait a moment, I'll have him come right away."

Half an hour later, a military vehicle stopped in front of the management committee, and the regimental commander in charge of the construction site in Hunhe walked in.

Xiao Wei went up to shake hands with the regimental commander and explained the situation. The regimental commander discussed the map with Secretary Dong for a while, nodded, and understood. After the matter was settled, everyone left the management committee together. District Chief Li and Secretary Dong rode back to the city in Xiao Wei's car, while the regimental commander left on his own.

After dropping the two leaders off at the district government, it was already dark, and Xiao Wei and his companion drove back.

Chen Hui said, "Now we're going to be famous. If all our projects are put together as one big project, we could be on TV every night at 7 pm. That's what Director Jing is planning to do, to package us as a big project to add luster to the development zone. That would be a huge achievement, and if the higher-ups are happy, all sorts of benefits might come down."

Xiao Wei said, "I don't understand these things. What benefits does District Chief Li get?"

Chen Hui said, "The benefits are huge. The higher-ups are too far away for him. He only needs the province to notice him, that's 100%. The benefit we get is this land, about a hundred acres in a city, and we still have to spend money to develop it."

Xiao Wei said, "There should be some tax benefits too. That's fine, otherwise we'd still have to buy it anyway."

Chen Hui lit a cigarette and handed it to Xiao Wei, then lit one for himself, saying, "You said you were going to take a shower, but it's already dark and we haven't eaten yet."

Xiao Wei said, "We'll have a different experience at Xidu tomorrow, so let's not bother tonight and go to bed early. We have to get up early tomorrow."

……

The next morning at seven o'clock.

People who went to Xidu gathered at the entrance of the courtyard to have breakfast at the bakery.

Xiaowei specially asked Xiahe's mother-in-law to get up early last night and cook a little more.

Handmade pancakes, stone-ground tofu pudding, tofu soup with egg drop soup, and meat sauce. The pancakes are spiral-shaped fried pancakes, and there are also sugar pancakes that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. One bite and you'll feel melt in your mouth. Everyone was praising them as they ate. They were really delicious.

Director Liu said, "It tastes just like my mom's cooking. I haven't had it in years. I'm clumsy with my hands and can't cook well. I'll come here to eat every day from now on."

Grandma Xiahe listened with a smile and said, "No, I'm too old. You can only eat a little bit. You can't eat like this every day, it'll get boring."

Director Liu took a napkin to wipe his mouth and said, "It's not greasy at all. How could I get tired of such good pancakes? The soup is delicious too. I just love this kind of home-style flavor."

Manager Zhang picked up another pancake, took a bite, and said, "I like this candy. I craved it when I was a kid. Back then, it was a big deal to eat it once or twice a year. We didn't have flour, and we couldn't afford to use oil. In recent years, our living standards have improved, but my mom is getting old and can't handle it anymore."

Grandma Xiahe smiled and said, "Come if you want to eat. There's no need to distinguish between morning and evening. Just come over when you want to eat, and I'll make them for you."

Fan Bo walked in yawning, paused for a moment when he saw the room full of people, and greeted everyone: "Hello, Brother Xiaowei, Brother Hui, Director Liu, Sister Jin."

Xiao Wei pointed to Manager Zhang and Manager Chen: "This is Uncle Zhang, and this is Uncle Chen. This is Aunt Fan's youngest son, Fan Bo."

Manager Zhang said, "Just call me brother, that's fine."

Xiao Wei said, "Let's stick to the proper order. Logically, Xiao Hui and I should both call you 'uncle,' but let's leave that aside. He can call you whatever he wants. Aunt Fan isn't even fifty yet, right? She's only a few years older than you. You're going to call her 'auntie'?"

Grandma Xiahe said, "Call him uncle, you have to be clear about the generation."

Fan Bo then called out, "Uncle Zhang, Uncle Chen."

Xiao Wei asked, "I haven't paid attention to you for a long time. What are you doing now?"

Fan Bo said, "I started out at the factory, but now I'm hanging out with Brother Dawei. He's been selling houses over there these past few days. I saw him when you went there the other day."

Xiao Wei thought for a moment and said, "Would you rather sell your house or go out and travel? Xiao Wu's team is setting up a department that involves frequent business trips. Want to go?"

Fan Bo glanced at his mother, scratched his head, and said, "I really want to go, but my mom doesn't want me to. My fifth brother asked me about it. I'd better just sell the house and car and wait a couple of years."

Chen Hui said, "That's good too. We'll sell a lot of houses next year. Can you drive? Go learn to drive."

Fan Bo turned to Grandma Xia He and said, "Look, I want to learn to drive, but you won't let me."

Xiao Wei said to Grandma Xia He, "Auntie, let Xiao Bo learn to drive and get a license. It'll be useful in the future."

Grandma Xiahe said, "Alright, I always thought he was just talking nonsense. Okay, let him register tomorrow."

After a lively breakfast, everyone gathered together.

Three cars arrived: two Cadillacs and the Grand Haier. Chen Hui removed the military license plates from the Ferrari and replaced them on the Grand Haier; no one would check anyway.

I grabbed two cases of bottled water from the old man's convenience store and threw them into the car, then grabbed some snacks, and the three cars set off.

The drivers of all three vehicles were from the artillery division, carrying guns and proper documentation. Several security personnel accompanied them.

We had lunch in Siping and arrived in Xidu at 2 PM. Transportation from Harbin to Xidu and then to Fengtian has always been very convenient, both by road and rail. However, the road wasn't yet fully developed, as it wasn't a highway.

The journey was safe and uneventful. We even took the opportunity to visit Hongbaolai Food Company in Siping. They mainly produce soft drinks and popsicles, and their products are quite popular in Fengtian.

Siping is an old city that was once the capital of Liaoxi Province and had a great reputation in history, but it gradually declined after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

We checked into the Xidu Hotel upon arrival. This time, we used the company's name, so we didn't need a letter of introduction; the local government had endorsed us.

After everyone was settled, Chen Hui called Miler to let her know. Miler's winery was next to the children's park; it was probably originally used by some organization before Miler rented it.

After resting for a while, everyone split up. Xiao Wei and Chen Hui went to Miler's place. Manager Zhang and the others followed Zhang Wei to see the renovated old buildings.

It's not far, only about one kilometer from the Xidu Hotel.

When Xiaowei and Chen Hui arrived, they saw a group of people hanging colorful flags and balloons at the entrance, and they also made an archway with tree branches. It was a four-story old building with a small villa on the back. It was said to be the former site of the Manchukuo Concord Association, not far from the Concord Association headquarters building that Xiaowei and his friends bought, about three or four hundred meters away.

Xiao Wei looked around and said, "It's a bit uncomfortable to see it blocking the way like this."

Chen Hui said, "I guess he wanted to be closer to the park. You can see into the park from this building; it should be a lake."

Xiao Wei nodded and said, "This place is quite large, much bigger than the building next to us. It must be over a hundred meters tall, right?"

Chen Hui said, "No, he just lined it up like this, while ours is a circle, and the large conference room in the middle almost covers it."

My new book needs some support! I guarantee it's a worthwhile and engaging read, so please add it to your favorites and recommend it. A little help from my lucky fingers, thank you!
