Chapter 24 The Call of the White City
After buying groceries, Jiang Zhengge parked his car downstairs and turned off the engine.
He didn't rush to leave, but lit a cigarette and took out his phone to make a call.
"Feed?" Hua Molan's voice came from the phone.
"Director," Jiang Zhengge greeted, "what did the foundation say?"
"She didn't say much. Ms. J was quite agitated before, but now she has accepted our explanation. It seems that the foundation has decided to abandon Qingtian."
"Wow, that was fast..."
Jiang Zhengge raised his wrist and glanced at his watch: It's 7:30 now, less than three hours since Qingtian's death.
In less than three hours, the hero they had been supporting became a pariah in the public discourse.
"This situation has indeed spiraled out of control. Let's take a step back and let them clean up this mess. After all, it'll take them a while to finish this."
"That's all we can do..." Hua Molan sighed. "I just hope you know what you're doing. Is Lin Chen really worth protecting?"
"Why not? He exceeded our expectations, killed a beast, and also possesses unknown powers," Jiang Zhengge chuckled. "He will become a promising talent as formidable as Zhanyi."
"Just a reminder, our original plan didn't include 'taking down Qingtian,' remember? He was just a breakthrough point," Hua Molan said.
"But that guy really deserved to die," Jiang Zhengge exhaled a breath of white air. "So be it, he's dead. We've achieved our goal. This is the first time the residents of Yudu have seen the ugly face of a demigod."
"...Jiang Zhengge, don't let personal emotions get into your work," Hua Molan reminded him.
"Okay, okay~" Jiang Zhengge replied perfunctorily. "By the way, add a few sentries to Building 4 of the attached residential area, just in case."
"They live with you, how could anything happen to them?"
"I didn't let them live with me; I arranged for Zhanyi to be my roommate." Jiang Zhengge flicked his cigarette butt out the car window.
"..."
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone, followed by another soft sigh.
"You should move on from that."
"It has nothing to do with that matter," Jiang Zhengge said, stretching his neck. "It would be bad luck for me to live with you. Young people have common topics to talk about and are less reserved. Isn't that great?"
After saying that, Jiang Zhengge hung up the phone and tossed it into his trench coat pocket.
He grabbed the shopping bag from the passenger seat, opened the car door, and ran towards the building in the rain.
.....
Lin Chen originally thought he would be embarrassed for a long time, at least three or four days.
To be honest, having never been in a relationship, he has never been to a girl's house, let alone become a roommate with a girl.
Not to mention the many inconveniences in daily life, the most important thing is that boys and girls have too few common topics to talk about!
But to his surprise, he soon found common ground with Li Zhanyi:
"Phew! Locked in! Awesome!"
"Wow, Lin Chen, that's impressive! That's how you lock it!"
In the living room, on the sofa, looking at the "You are the champion" logo on the big screen, Lin Chen put down the controller.
"It's alright," he said casually. "Your account is only Platinum, so you can easily crush it."
Li Zhanyi sat cross-legged to Lin Chen's right. The girl was wearing pajamas, and her crossed ankles shone brightly in the dim room.
Huihui sat to Lin Chen's left. Although she didn't say much, her eyes were always shining, and she was no longer as lifeless as before.
Throughout the game, as Lin Chen made his moves, Li Zhanyi kept swaying her body and occasionally bumping into him, as if she were playing a game herself.
"Even Platinum rank is hard to beat, you're just too good," Li Zhanyi tilted her head to look at Lin Chen, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear with her slender fingers. "How did you train?"
"There are fewer classes in college, so I have nothing to do but play games in the dorm," Lin Chen shrugged. "You get better with practice."
"Nothing to do? Aren't you going to date?" Li Zhanyi asked in surprise. "Nothing to do? Go date someone!"
These words stung Lin Chen somewhat; the corner of his mouth twitched slightly as he said:
Is dating considered a pastime...?
"You're asking me? I haven't talked about it," the girl smiled innocently. "Have you forgotten? I spend all my free time working for the Investigation Bureau, catching anomalies, going down into subspace ruins... I handle real guns!"
"You haven't even talked to me, yet you're asking me to..." Lin Chen thought to himself, handing her the controller.
"Why don't you play a game? I'll teach you."
"Okay," Li Zhanyi gave Lin Chen a thumbs up, "As a reward, I'll teach you how to do it for real tomorrow!"
"it is good."
Lin Chen smiled and turned to look at Huihui beside him.
The little girl was staring at her phone when she noticed Lin Chen's gaze, and she immediately put her phone away.
"Brother," Huihui whispered.
"Let me guess, you're following the news online?" Lin Chen offered his guess.
He got the answer almost immediately: Huihui lowered her head, looking dejected.
"Qingtian is dead," Huihui said softly. "Some people say... he was murdered in a revenge killing because someone claiming to be a family member of a bridge survivor appeared at the scene, and he—"
Lin Chen grabbed her wrist.
Huihui raised her head like a startled little animal, and then met Lin Chen's firm gaze.
"Huihui, he deserved it," Lin Chen comforted her. "As for the rest, you don't need to worry about it. Whoever shot him, he deserved it."
There's no need for Huihui to know that it was him who fired the shot... Lin Chen thought to himself.
This will only make her anxious and fearful.
Although this smart and sensible girl probably already guessed it.
Then we mustn't let her worry.
"..."
Huihui seemed to want to say something more, but she noticed Lin Chen's gaze and silently looked away.
At that moment, accompanied by the sound of fingerprint unlocking, the door opened.
Just as Li Zhanyi was about to start another game, he immediately threw down the controller and jumped up from the sofa:
"Old Jiang! What delicious food did you buy?"
"Spare ribs," Jiang Zhengge said, picking up the plastic bag in his hand, "I need to borrow your kitchen."
"Alright, then I'll wait to eat!" Li Zhanyi raised her hands in cheers, her loose sleeves flowing down, her snow-white arms shining like glow sticks in the dimly lit room, cheering for Jiang Zhengge.
Lin Chen avoided eye contact, got up and walked towards the kitchen, saying:
"I'll cook a couple of dishes too."
"Young people are all about showing off?" Jiang Zhengge smiled slightly. "Come on, let me see what you've got."
"Huihui, wait for my triumphant return." Lin Chen rubbed Huihui's head.
Watching Lin Chen walk away, Huihui subconsciously wanted to follow, but was gently patted on the shoulder.
She turned her head and was met with Li Zhanyi's smiling, beautiful face.
"Huihui, is there any game you want to play? I have all the mainstream AAA games in my library, shall I play with you?"
Huihui hesitated for a moment, glanced at the kitchen, then at Li Zhanyi, and finally nodded gently:
"it is good."
"Here you go, choose... Huh? 'Agents in a Deserted Village to Save the President's Daughter 4'? Are you playing something this violent...?"
"It's fun."
......
Lin Chen and Huihui hadn't had a decent meal in a long time, so a plate of braised pork ribs, a plate of scrambled eggs with tomatoes, and a plate of stir-fried vegetables was considered a feast.
Lin Chen was in charge of making scrambled eggs with tomatoes, which was his signature dish—meaning he wasn't very good at making other dishes.
The atmosphere at the dinner table was much better than Lin Chen had expected. Jiang Zhengge barely spoke, while Li Zhanyi kept trying to win over Huihui, thinking of ways to chat with her and cheer the girl up.
She was like a little sun, and under her light, Huihui's expression clearly relaxed a lot.
Looking at the slight upturn of the little girl's lips, Lin Chen suddenly felt a little sad.
At her age, she should still be carefree and in school.
"..."
After dinner, Lin Chen asked Jiang Zhengge about Huihui's studies and was told that "the Investigation Bureau also has an affiliated middle school, and you can go to apply for it tomorrow," which relieved him of another worry.
After settling Huihui in, Lin Chen went straight to his room and fell asleep immediately.
Exhaustion overwhelmed his consciousness almost instantly, pulling him into a dream.
"..."
After an unknown amount of time, Lin Chen slowly opened his eyes and found himself standing in the center of a pure white city.
He looked down and saw a tombstone standing at his feet.
The tombstone bears a simple name:
Jim "Skyscraper" Johnston.
"..."
As Lin Chen's gaze fell upon the tombstone, streaks of pale blue light spread out from it, reaching every corner of the city.
In the distance, someone is calling out to Lin Chen.
