Chapter 117 Leaving, Starting with a Scream
Since I'm leaving soon anyway, I might as well test what this guiding spell will look like in my own hands.
Joseph refocused his attention on the purple spell slot in his mind, hesitated for a moment, and then reached out and tapped it.
Since it's a guiding technique, the questions should be asked as clearly as possible. He asked himself very seriously:
How can I safely leave the Eye of the Sea Lighthouse?
The next second, a thin purple line extended from Joseph's fingertip and slowly floated in the air.
Joseph's eyes lit up slightly. Could it really be used as a navigation tool? He had originally thought that the guidance magic Grace had mastered would only give him a vague feeling in his mind, such as whether to go left or right, or suddenly feel that it was best not to do something.
Unexpectedly, after the feedback was given to him, he was even able to draw the route directly.
This skill is much more useful than he expected!
In the future, at least you won't have to worry about getting lost in unfamiliar places. Just ask yourself which way to the hotel, or where to find a cheap and safe restaurant, and you might just see a purple line.
Joseph was about to follow the purple line to the stairwell when he noticed the line sway slightly in mid-air before pointing directly at a stone slab at his feet.
The thin purple line didn't stop after hitting the stone slab; it went straight through the ground and disappeared below.
Joseph looked down at his feet, then glanced at the perfectly normal staircase not far away, and fell into deep thought.
What does this mean? He just asked how to safely leave the Sea Eye Lighthouse.
Normally, shouldn't it point to the path they just came up from? Why is it pointing downwards?
Could this thing be interpreting safely leaving the Ocean Eye Lighthouse as safely leaving this world?
Or perhaps after Grace mastered the guiding technique, and the skill was passed on to him, some strange mutation occurred that shouldn't have happened?
"Is there something else down there?" Brewster's voice came from the side.
Joseph looked up and found that Brewster had somehow walked up to him and was following his gaze toward the unremarkable stone slab.
Of course, Joseph couldn't tell him that he had just wanted to test his newly acquired navigation skills, but instead of pointing to the exit, the navigation had plunged him straight into the floor.
He remained silent for a moment, then could only say, "I'm just observing."
Brewster's expression immediately turned serious.
As expected, Professor Grantham never thought the investigation was over. They reached the top of the tower without incident, and once they saw the Sea Eye Crystal, everyone's attention was drawn to the crystal and the surrounding magical circuits.
Even he was just inspecting the metal pipes and magic runes inside the stone platform, considering the possible consequences of removing the crystal.
But Grantham had already discovered that the real problem wasn't with the crystal that was out in the open.
They encountered nothing along the way, not the Black Line, nor the people who had entered the lighthouse ahead of time, but the pile of unburnt wood and fish bones proved that someone had indeed been there in the past few days.
Since the person is not on the tower, they could only have gone somewhere else.
Below the lighthouse!
Professor Grantham's suggestion to leave first was probably also for observation. He wanted to see if the people hiding below would deliberately leave any trace as they prepared to retreat.
As Brewster thought about this, his gaze toward the stone slab became much more serious.
Evelyn and Allen quickly gathered around. The fisherman, carrying the empty fish basket, glanced down at the unremarkable stone slab on the ground and naturally took a half-step back. Although he liked to go inside the abandoned lighthouse to see if there was anything he could take, it was better to leave this kind of problematic stone slab to the archmage and the knight.
"Here?" Allen asked, crouching down.
Before Joseph could answer, he had already tapped the stone slab twice, and the sound was indeed different from the surroundings.
Allen's eyes lit up, and he knocked on a few more spots.
"It's empty underneath!"
"Don't..."
Before Joseph could finish speaking, Allen stood up and handed the oil lamp to the fisherman next to him. Then he drew his longsword from his waist and inserted the tip into a narrow crack in the edge of the stone slab.
"This stone slab seems to have loosened."
As he spoke, he exerted force with his wrist, and the entire stone slab split in two. One half was quickly flicked aside by Allen with his sword, while the other half fell into the hole below, and soon a series of sounds of it hitting the steps could be heard.
As the dust slowly dissipated, a narrow staircase leading downwards was indeed revealed beneath the stone slab.
The fisherman handed the oil lamp back to Allen, whispering, "This wasn't the merchant guild's warehouse before, was it?"
"It shouldn't be," Evelyn said, looking at the stone walls on both sides of the steps. She gently wiped away the dust next to the cave entrance with her fingers, revealing a small section of a long-blurred relief inside the stone wall.
"This might be the real path leading to what lies beneath the ruins."
Joseph:
What kind of guidance is this? Is it because if the problems below aren't resolved, they won't be truly safe even if they go out now?
Or does this skill believe that eliminating the person who created the danger is the safest way to leave? But either way, it falls short of the navigation skill he hoped for.
Allen had relit the oil lamp, and holding it up to shine down the steps, he said, "I'll go down and take a look!"
"There's no obvious water accumulation on the stone steps, and there are no signs of recent collapses around, so it should be passable," Brewster said before following Allen down the steps.
Joseph: "————" When did you guys agree that we had to go down?
He wanted to try and persuade her further, but Evelyn had already turned around and asked gently, "Professor, shall we go down too?"
Joseph glanced at the cavern, then at Alan and Brewster waiting for them below. Two of them had already gone in; they couldn't just leave them to continue their investigation on their own, especially since the guidance spell was indeed pointing this way.
"Go down and take a look," Joseph said, "but if you find anything unusual, turn back immediately."
The fisherman stood at the entrance of the hole and looked down: "Should I go down too?"
"You can stay here."
After listening, the man glanced at the empty stone chamber around him, and his expression slowly became somewhat uneasy.
I didn't realize it when there were so many people around, but now, leaving an ordinary person alone in an abandoned lighthouse doesn't necessarily seem safer than being with the great mage.
"I'd better come along," the man said immediately. "If there's another waterway down there, I might be able to help."
The group walked down the stone steps, and after climbing countless steps, a dark gray stone gate finally appeared in front of them.
Before they even reached the door, a scream suddenly came from behind it!
"There's someone inside!"
Allen's smile vanished instantly, and he strode to the door.
