I made up magic and taught a world-destroying witch?

Chapter 27: The Observation Group – Starting with Fighting for Positions

"If this counts as new magic, then could Professor Grantham himself demonstrate a standard one for us—"

"Professor Brewster," Academician Wade interrupted him, glancing at Grace and Mia in the center of the demonstration table.

The two students looked as if they were regretting something.

Academician Wade, however, looked at Joseph with such a gleam in his eyes that it made Joseph's heart pound.

"Today is a student demonstration class, not an individual spellcasting assessment by the instructor," Academician Wade said slowly and deliberately.

Brewster frowned.

"But……"

"There's no need for 'buts'," Academician Wade interrupted him directly.

Now, the assessment tower was even quieter.

After all, although Academician Wade's reputation for gambling on research projects wasn't exactly respectable, he was still an academician of the association, and one of the earliest people on the Magic Revival Special Review Committee to support Joseph's project.

In other words, this old man isn't simply speaking up for Joseph; he's speaking up for his own all-in bet back then.

Joseph remained outwardly calm and collected.

I almost kowtowed to Academician Wade on the spot.

Yes, yes, Academician Wade is right.

Today is a student demonstration class, not an individual spellcasting assessment by the instructor, nor a special trial to expose a fake grand mage in public.

We're all adults here, and colleagues in the academy should show some decorum. We shouldn't suddenly shift the topic to issues like whether the instructor himself can cast spells, which is very detrimental to unity.

Academician Wade raised his hand and pointed to the two students on the demonstration platform.

"Moreover," Academician Wade pointed to Grace and Mia on the demonstration platform,

"Shouldn't our focus now be on the phenomena that have just emerged in these two students?"

As soon as he said that, the old professors on the theoretical side seemed to have been awakened by something.

"That's right."

An elderly professor in a gray robe placed his quill pen on his notebook and nodded solemnly.

"Mia Taylor's fire-type deviation is slight, but her stability is significantly higher than the spillover incidents in her past training records."

Another older professor adjusted his glasses and took over the conversation.

"Princess Grace is more important. The results of the zero magic perception test have been jointly confirmed by the Royal Academy, the Court Mage Corps, and the Association's testing group. If she can manifest magic through spell slot training, that in itself is enough to constitute a research sample."

"More than that." Academician Wade's eyebrows twitched again. "This is a case study that is sufficient to re-examine the old evaluation system of magical education."

After hearing this, Joseph almost applauded the old man in his heart.

No wonder he is an academician.

Both are bragging, but while one is still figuring out how to package failure as valuable observation, the other has already escalated to re-examining the old magic education evaluation system.

No wonder he could lose his whole life gambling and still sit in the academician's seat; his vision and character are truly beyond his reach.

Brewster's face visibly darkened.

"Academician Wade, if I may be so bold, a slight reaction to a light spell or a slight deviation in fire element, even if it is indeed worth recording, cannot prove that the so-called new magic system truly exists."

He looked at Joseph.

"Where is the spell slot? Where is the model embedded? These processes all occur in the students' subjective descriptions, which we cannot directly observe."

Brewster's statement is actually very true.

It made so much sense that even Joseph himself wanted to nod in agreement.

Don't tell me you can't see it; the person who proposed the theory has never seen it either, since it's all made up.

But at a time like this, he certainly couldn't stand on Brewster's side.

"Professor Brewster."

Another theory professor, whose thinning hair made it seem as if he had already sacrificed half of his wisdom to his papers, spoke up:

"Early verification of a new theory cannot possibly reach the complete visualization stage in one step."

Didn't the earliest records of the old-era spiritual inscription techniques also rely on the caster's subjective descriptions before gradually developing external detection methods?

"That's right."

"Furthermore, the testing of the crystal has proven that the observed results are not an illusion."

"Miss Taylor's spark was not a simple accident, and Princess Grace's white light cannot be explained by ordinary old magic training."

"I suggest that today's presentation results be compiled into a progress report."

"It would be best to include comparison records of two students before and after the training."

"There are also test records."

"And Professor Grantham's new framework for magical education."

"It would be best to set up a temporary observation group."

"The observation group's suggestion is excellent."

"I can take charge of the theoretical origins section."

"Then I'll be in charge of the theoretical comparison part of the old rune container."

"I can also take a look at the stability of the mental structure."

The old professors talked faster and faster, and the topic, which started with Brewster asking Joseph to demonstrate in person, inexplicably veered to some strange place.

Joseph remained outwardly calm, but inwardly he was starting to feel a chill.

The biggest advantage of his project is its remoteness, quietness, and lack of supervision.

If a group of old professors were to come and sit in the lab tower every day watching how he teaches students, wouldn't that be just as terrifying as a fraud gang suddenly getting a permanent audit team?

But the thought only lingered in Joseph's mind for a few seconds.

Because he soon realized something else.

What observation group, special project results...

What do these words mean when put together?

It means money!

If the project enters the critical observation phase, should we increase the budget for consumables?

Should we upgrade the testing equipment and purchase more sophisticated recording tools? Not to mention, what could have been described as simply taking students out for fun could now be formally repackaged as the New Magic Low-Ring Sample Multi-Environment Adaptability Observation Plan?

Joseph's mood immediately calmed down.

Trouble is trouble, but if trouble can be used to make a living, then it is not just trouble.

Brewster clearly sensed that the conversation was veering rapidly in a direction that was very unfavorable to him, and he said with a grim face:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I am not denying the unusual behavior of these two students."

But anomalies are not the same as systems. Princess Grace is of royal blood. Who can guarantee that she doesn't already possess undiscovered magical traits?

As for Miss Taylor, she has a history of fire-based overflows, so the sparks she's displaying now may not necessarily be related to Professor Grantham's theories.

Joseph suddenly felt a subtle appreciation for Brewster.

His thought process was just like his; he also thought these two were probably some kind of hidden genius girls, otherwise how could they have learned old magic from his bunch of nonsense?

Unfortunately, he couldn't say such things himself.

He could only stand there in silence, as if Brewster's questioning was something he had expected.

Academician Wade laughed.

"Professor Brewster, you are right."

Brewster frowned.

Academician Wade continued:

"So this precisely demonstrates the importance of Professor Grantham's project."

Brewster's expression instantly turned somewhat unpleasant.

Joseph was also taken aback.

Huh? This can prove something?
