I made up magic and taught a world-destroying witch?

Chapter 65: Spells, Starting with Testing

As Joseph walked toward the training tower, he pondered the two career paths that Mia and Grace had just decided on.

To be honest, the arrangements actually seem quite plausible.

One is responsible for repairing things, and the other is responsible for helping to stabilize things. The mechanic and the guide are placed on the table when the association reviews them. Along with a few training records and observation charts, everyone who comes will say that the new magic project has initially formed a professional division of labor.

But the problem is also obvious: neither of these two professions is viable.

It's not that they're completely useless, but in actual combat, you might have to ask the enemy if they're willing to stand still and cooperate with them.

Joseph suddenly wondered if he should recruit another aggressive student as soon as possible.

Ideally, the type would be someone with a slightly simple mind, a strong body, clear life ideals, and who only wants to throw spells at anything they see.

He wasn't discriminating against smart people, but in a team, someone always has to be responsible for dealing damage, right?

The black lines beneath the abandoned portal are the best example.

If he encounters something strange again, he can't keep hoping that the two spell slots in his head will suddenly malfunction and land in the correct position.

Once or twice is lucky, but if he does it a third time, Joseph himself feels that it is a bit disrespectful to life.

Therefore, we need to figure out as soon as possible what we can actually do with what we get from our students.

The Royal Academy's training tower is located on the west side of the academy, not far from the assessment tower, but it is shorter and has fewer fancy decorations.

This area is mainly used by students and professors to test spells in practical classes. The walls look like they were recently maintained, and you can still see the newly repaired protective patterns on the light gray stone bricks.

It is evident that the Royal Academy has indeed cultivated many talents with a challenging spirit towards building safety over the years.

As soon as Joseph walked in, the teaching assistant on duty behind the registration desk immediately stood up.

"Professor Grantham?"

The assistant coach looked to be in his twenties. A training room usage log was spread out on the table in front of him. He clearly hadn't expected Joseph to come in person, and hesitated for a moment before quickly saying:

Are you here to reserve a training room?

"Yes." Joseph nodded. "I need to test two spells."

Professor Grantham personally came to the training tower to test the spells. Could it be that the new magic project has made some major progress?

The teaching assistant immediately pushed the registration book over, and her attitude became much more serious.

"Professor, would you like a regular training room, or a high-risk spell testing room with protective runes?"

Joseph had only planned to ask for an ordinary room, but upon hearing this, the images of the two spells he had used when he went down the well last time immediately flashed into his mind.

Nobody knows for sure where those two weirdos can fly to right now, and if the regular training room gets damaged, the compensation will definitely have to come from him.

"High-risk spell testing room," Joseph said decisively.

The teaching assistant's expression became even more serious.

So, Professor Grantham's new magic test has become so dangerous that the ordinary training room can no longer withstand it?

"I see."

The teaching assistant immediately bowed his head to register the information, then cautiously asked, "Should we clear the training area next to us?"

Joseph: "...Just follow the normal arrangements."

He wasn't planning to destroy the entire training tower; he was just testing two skills. There was no need to make it seem like the whole training tower needed to be evacuated.

"Normal arrangement?" The teaching assistant asked, somewhat puzzled.

Professor Grantham wanted to test a high-risk new spell but didn't require the training area to be cleared. Was this because the professor had absolute certainty about the actual destructive range of the spell?

Was it simply because the spell's power was too high that they chose the more secure testing room?

The teaching assistant felt a surge of awe.

He took out a key with a red tag and personally led Joseph inside.

Upon reaching the second floor, he seemed to remember something and explained beforehand:

"Professor, according to the safety regulations of the training tower, all high-risk test rooms have observation windows outside, and there will be a duty recorder responsible for recording the changes in magic during the test."

Observation window? He'd forgotten all about that.

In a place like the Royal Academy, students have to write reports and make a record even if they break a target during training. How could they let him mess around in the high-risk training room by himself?

But then he thought about it again and realized there was nothing to be afraid of now. He hadn't dared to let anyone see him before because he couldn't cast any magic spells.

Now we can at least release something.

As for flying crookedly, taking an odd route, or having an effect that is different from a normal spell, so what?

New magic? If everything is the same as old magic, what's new about it?

Flying off course means a non-fixed trajectory. Turning can be called an adaptive path. As long as the name is reasonable enough, there is no anomaly in the world that cannot be explained!

"It's alright," Joseph said calmly.

The teaching assistant admired him even more.

When professors test spells they haven't yet revealed, they're usually worried about the recordings being leaked, or they'll ask that the viewing window be closed.

Professor Grantham not only didn't mind, but was so open about it, even willing to let the academy witness the process of the new magic maturing from instability.

What kind of magnanimity is this?

The teaching assistant stopped asking questions and led Joseph to a heavy metal door. The training room was much larger than Joseph had imagined. There were three layers of different colored rune rings on the walls, and an attack range line was drawn in the center of the floor. Against the wall were some training puppets, fixed targets, and a row of black stone slabs used to test destructive power.

There was a large, transparent observation window high up on the wall. Joseph looked up and saw that there was only the duty recorder outside the window for the time being.

Joseph walked into the training room, and the metal door slowly closed behind him.

He stood in the center of the training room, raised his right hand, and focused his attention on the red-gold spell slot in his mind. The spell slot was quietly suspended there, with what looked like a small ball of fire flickering inside.

Joseph pressed down gently with his mind, and the next moment a red-gold spark flew out from his fingertip.

The red-gold spark wobbled in mid-air, first crashing into the left wall, then inexplicably turning a corner just before hitting the protective rune, grazing the head of a training puppet, and finally landing with a thud on the ground, leaving a black spot on the ground.

Outside the observation window, two more students who had just finished training and were attracted by the surroundings had appeared.

One of them asked in a low voice, "Did it fail?"

"Don't talk nonsense," the assistant coach said, frowning as he stared at Joseph deep in thought in the training room.

"Professor Grantham is probably recreating the state of Mia Taylor's initial out-of-control spark."

"Reproduced?"

"Have you forgotten? Taylor's earliest manifestation of magic was spark deviation!"

The recorder beside him, looking thoughtfully at the crooked, magical trajectory on the recording disc, remarked:

"The professor started the test from the initial unstable state, perhaps to reconfirm the process of how the student's spell changed from out of control to stable."

"Very likely."

The teaching assistant nodded.

"Only by personally recreating each stage can one truly understand the problems students faced at that time."

The students immediately showed expressions of realization and awe.

This time, Joseph chose a moving puppet directly in front of him, which was slowly moving along a track, making it perfect for testing.

A thin thread flew from his fingertip, then cleanly grazed past the moving puppet, wrapped around the support next to the fixed target, and pulled the entire fixed target to the side.

Joseph: "..."

Outside the observation window, another low murmur arose.

"Purple line!"

"What is this? Could it be Her Highness the Third Princess's magic?"

"I heard that His Highness has just figured it out."

"Can Professor Grantham reproduce this today?"

"So this is the new magic? How strange!"

Joseph couldn't hear what was being said outside, but as he stood in the training room, a question suddenly occurred to him.

At least the skills in the game have range indicators, such as how many meters the target range is, how the hit detection works, how long the cooldown is, and how much mana it consumes.

What about him? He just pressed a spell slot, and the spell started running on its own, like someone who's never taken a driving test.

If the bolts are released randomly every time, he might as well buy a crossbow and carry it with him. At least when the bolts fly out, they are unlikely to suddenly veer off course and hit the wall.

But what if he simply cast the spell without specifying a target, like pressing a skill button in a game without selecting an enemy?
