Chapter 68: The Invitation Begins with a Cake
Allen was standing by the roadside, waving at him.
The young knight was still wearing the light armor of the White Dove Church, with a sword hanging at his waist, and the smile on his face looked even more energetic than the approaching midday sun.
Seeing Joseph looking at him, Allen strode over and gave him a very standard knightly salute.
"Good day, Professor! It's so good to see you, hahaha!"
Joseph glanced at him; he didn't particularly think so.
Generally speaking, it's unlikely that a church knight would specifically wait for him by the roadside because the sun is shining and he wants to invite him for a walk.
Especially since this knight had just taken him down the old diversion well where they almost lost their lives.
"Sir Allen," Joseph nodded, "What brings you to the academy?"
Sister Evelyn sent me to find you.
Joseph: "..." It's definitely not a good thing.
Allen, however, didn't seem to feel any pressure from his words at all. He continued with a bright smile, saying:
"The townspeople who were rescued last night and the day before are feeling unwell again today."
"Where does it hurt?"
"It's mainly a cough," Allen said.
"Several people are coughing quite badly. Sister Evelyn and the others have already helped with comforting blessings and simple checks. The Magic Association has also sent people to check, but they said they didn't find any obvious magical contamination."
"No obvious problems were found?"
"Yes." Allen nodded. "But Sister Evelyn found it strange because they all came out of the old diversion well, and their coughs started around the same time. So she wanted to ask the professor to go and take a look and see if he could offer any insights."
Joseph: "..."
He is a professor at the Royal College of Physicians, not a visiting physician at the White Dove Church, and certainly not a healing master who can tell you that you have a problem in your lungs just by touching your forehead.
"If it's a health issue, a doctor would be more appropriate," Joseph said thoughtfully.
"The academy also has professors who specialize in potions and diseases."
If you're sick, go to a doctor; if you have a curse, go to an association; if you have psychological trauma, go to a nun. Why would you go to him?
At most, all you'll get from him is a "drink more hot water" message, and that you should boil the water yourself.
"Haha, that's what I think too!" Allen nodded vigorously.
Joseph: "..." Then why don't you go back?
Allen continued:
"However, Sister Evelyn said that this might not be a common illness."
They were all rescued from beneath the abandoned portal and stayed near those black lines for so long.
The fact that the association didn't see any obvious problems doesn't mean there weren't any.
You saw the situation down in the well yesterday and used the new magic to deal with the black lines, so the nun hopes you can go and take a look if you have time.
Joseph: "..."
We need to think of a way to push this matter onto the professors in the college who actually understand the disease.
Meanwhile, on the third floor of the experimental tower.
Mia was squatting next to a pile of old tools, her face smeared with black ash, making her look like a red tabby cat that had just poked its head out of a coal ash heap.
She had just finished taking inventory of a bunch of tools whose original purpose was unknown. Some of them were even broken and looked like they had been lying there peacefully for many years. They were perfect for practicing repair skills later.
Mia put them aside, in a rather good mood. Her husband had even prepared the training materials long ago.
Once she can fix these small things, she can try to fix more complex parts.
Compared to the messy materials and tools on the third floor, the second floor wasn't so scary. It looked like some simple magic reaction tests had been done here before. There were a few old tables and shelves piled up in the corner, and a lot of dust.
Grace rolled up her sleeves, took a few old records off the shelf, and gently patted off the dust.
She had never done these things before.
In the palace, such matters would be handled in advance by maids. She only needed to walk into the cleaned room, sit in the chair that someone had pulled out for her, and pick up the teacup that had been set out for her.
But now, she has to decide for herself which things can be disposed of and which can be kept, giving her the right to decide where things should be placed for the first time.
Grace continued to explore the second floor while jotting things down in her notebook.
After both of them had been busy for half a day, Mia finally couldn't resist peeking her head out from the third-floor stairwell:
"Grace!"
"What's wrong?"
Are you hungry?
Grace: "..."
She glanced down at the notes she was halfway through organizing, then touched her slightly empty stomach.
"A little."
"I'm hungry too." Mia immediately dusted off her hands and ran down the stairs. She ran to the second floor and glanced back at the lobby on the first floor.
"Has the master not returned yet?"
Grace subconsciously looked downstairs as well.
"Sir must be very busy today," Grace said softly.
"That's true. Sir rescued so many people from the well yesterday, and this morning he gave us guidance, prepared for the association's review, and has so many other matters to attend to at the academy..."
The more Mia talked, the more she realized how hard her husband had worked. If it were her, she probably would have been lying on the ground, not wanting to move at all.
Is this the great magician?
At this point, Mia suddenly asked, "Grace, can you bake a cake?"
"Cake?" Grace was taken aback.
"Yeah," Mia said, "I suddenly have a craving."
Grace: "..."
Mia quickly realized that this reason sounded somewhat inappropriate, and hurriedly added:
"Of course, it's mainly for my husband."
"Sir, you've worked so hard today, we can prepare a cake for you before you get back."
"But I've never done this before." Grace hesitated; she had never been exposed to these things before.
"Neither do I," Mia said frankly, "but isn't this just right?"
"What?"
"I'm a Mechanist, and you're a Guide," Mia said, increasingly convinced of her own reasoning.
"Making a cake requires preparing ingredients, right? Flour, eggs, sugar, and the stove."
"I'll be responsible for making it, and you'll be responsible for guiding me and making sure it doesn't fail too badly."
Grace looked at her, unsure whether to first correct her to the idea that mechanics are probably not meant for making cakes, or that even a guide might not be able to prevent someone making a cake for the first time from failing.
This sounds very unlike the guidance Mr. gave this morning.
But in her mind, she saw the image of her husband returning to the experimental tower and seeing a cake on the table.
When the gentleman returned to the experimental tower, he saw a cake on the table. Perhaps it didn't taste as good as the one made by the court pastry chef, but the gentleman should be happy, right?
He seemed to really enjoy the snacks he brought; at least, he should be happier than if they had just cleaned two rooms.
Grace hesitated for a moment, then finally nodded gently.
"Then let's give it a try."
Mia's eyes immediately lit up.
"Okay! Let's make a cake together and give it to Mr. [their husband] when he gets back!"
On the way to the academy, Joseph was preparing for one last refusal.
Allen, as if suddenly remembering something, raised his hand and slapped his head, saying:
"Oh, right! Sister Evelyn also baked some mooncakes with honey."
Joseph: "..."
Allen said very sincerely:
"She said that the White Dove Church usually bakes these small cakes for frightened children and the families of dockworkers. They contain malt flour, honey, and a little sweetened milk. The nun also added some dried calming herbs, which make them feel better after eating them."
As he said this, his smile grew even brighter:
Sister Evelyn's cupcakes are so delicious, hahaha!
She said the professor had been such a great help, and if she wanted to go over today, she could rest there for a while.
Joseph: "..." This is a bit hard to refuse.
It wasn't that he was bribed by the little cake; the main reason was that, as a professor at the Royal Academy, he did participate in the investigation of the abandoned portal site.
The rescued person is now coughing, and the White Dove Church has asked him to come over to understand the situation, which is reasonable from a procedural standpoint.
Besides, Mia and Grace are currently tidying up the second and third floor laboratories, and they haven't finished yet. Even if he doesn't go today, given Sister Evelyn's way of doing things, she will most likely find a way to get this matter to him later.
Rather than being chased by things, I'd rather deal with them all at once today and then continue being his idle great magician.
Of course, most importantly, he had just used up some of his mental energy testing the spell, so replenishing his body with some sugar was a perfectly reasonable way to recover.
"Since Sister Evelyn has said so," Joseph nodded and said, "I'll go take a look."
"Hahaha! I knew the professor wouldn't refuse!"
"However, I can only offer on-site observations," Joseph said in advance. "The specific treatment will depend on the doctor."
"Of course, of course!" Allen nodded repeatedly. "That's what the nun meant too. She said it's already very kind of the professor to come and see."
Joseph sighed inwardly and followed Allen toward the north gate of the academy.
Legend has it that nuns are very skilled at making desserts, and it seems that this world is no exception.
Joseph couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation.
The young knight was still wearing the light armor of the White Dove Church, with a sword hanging at his waist, and the smile on his face looked even more energetic than the approaching midday sun.
