Chapter 99 The King's Conversation: Starting with Control
The master had indeed been unwilling to subject them to unnecessary danger, but for some reason Grace still felt that Sister Evelyn had very naturally excluded her and Mia from the master's later plans.
"We can stay outside," Grace said, "to help the gentleman with the records and preparations."
Evelyn gently shook her head: "We don't know yet whether the danger comes from inside the lighthouse or the surrounding sea. Staying outside isn't necessarily safe either. Besides, once the professor enters the lighthouse, he'll have to keep an eye on the two of you."
If something really happened to Miss Mia and Princess Grace, the professor would blame himself more than anyone else.
Mia pursed her lips; she found the statement even stranger. The nun had clearly cared for them the whole time, so why did it sound as if they would inevitably become a burden to the master if they went with her?
"But the gentleman can't go in alone," Mia couldn't help but say.
"Of course not," Evelyn said with a smile. "I will accompany the professor in with the knights of the White Dove Church."
The church has some experience in dealing with old relics, and at least when danger arises, we won't distract the professors.

Mia: "————"
Grace:
'
Joseph, however, thought Evelyn's words made a lot of sense.
The two students had just used up all their magic, and the spell slots had only recently appeared. If they were brought into the Old Ruins at this time, and something went wrong, he would not only have to deal with the black lines and the old gods who were unsure whether they were awake or not, but he would also have to be ready to pull the students out of danger one by one at any time.
The church is different. Allen is physically strong and has learned to mock others. The nuns and other nuns also offer various blessings. No matter how you look at it, it doesn't seem like a team that is particularly easy to be wiped out suddenly.
Could there be anything more suitable to bring into the tower? Moreover, with the addition of the experienced Professor Brewster, the entire investigation team would suddenly become extremely reliable.
"Sister Evelyn is right," Joseph said. "Your mission has achieved its purpose."
Mia and Grace both fell silent, and Mia's expression clearly showed some disappointment.
"The day after tomorrow is a day off. After you go back to the academy tomorrow, Mia can go back to see your father. Grace can also rest for a day."
The spell slots have just changed; I'll write down today's events when I get back.
When it came to reports and records, the two finally looked a little more serious.
"I will write it," Mia nodded.
Grace said softly, "I understand, sir."
However, the two of them still didn't seem very happy, which Joseph thought was probably because their off-campus internship had ended early.
It's like going on a spring outing, and before you've even finished lunch, the teacher suddenly announces that the fun for the day is over, so everyone has to go back to school immediately. It would be hard for anyone to be happy in that situation.
"Let's go back to the inn first," Joseph said. "We'll leave this to the patrol and the church."
Mia and Grace responded.
Evelyn bowed to the two of them and said, "Thank you both for your hard work tonight."
"7
"No," Grace said politely.
"The nun has worked hard too," Mia whispered, but after she finished speaking, she couldn't help but steal a glance at Evelyn.
The group walked back to the main pontoon bridge.
Before leaving, Evelyn's gaze lingered on Joseph's face for a moment, and the corners of her mouth slowly curved into a slight smile: "Well then, see you the day after tomorrow, Professor Brewster."
Joseph: "————" She had indeed heard it.
Mia instinctively turned to look at Joseph, and Grace also quietly raised her eyes. Joseph continued walking forward without changing his expression.
Evelyn watched his retreating figure, her smile seeming to deepen before she led the people from the White Dove Church away.
Joseph then led Mia and Grace back to the water hotel.
Let's rest tonight, and tomorrow we'll bring the real Maurice Brewster over to work. Everything's ready now; Brewster should be moved if he knew.
As night deepened, the wooden planks of the floating hotel swayed gently in the waves, and the occasional sound of patrols moving wooden crates could be heard outside the window.
Grace sat by the window, sorting through the day's events, but as her pen fell, the image of Sister Evelyn speaking kept replaying in her mind.
Mia sat on the bed, clutching a pillow, clearly not ready to sleep. She glanced at the copper pot on the table, then at Grace, and finally turned to look at the closed door.
After a long while, she whispered, "Grace."
"What's wrong?"
Mia hesitated for a moment before asking, "Sister Evelyn—does she dislike us a little?"
Grace lowered her eyes, looking at the unfinished record on the paper.
"—You may not know this, but Sister Evelyn is the next saint chosen by the church."
Mia's eyes widened: "The Saintess?"
"So, she's probably just good at organizing things."
After hearing this, Mia's confusion did not lessen at all.
"Don't overthink it." Grace closed her notebook. "We have to get up early tomorrow."
She reached out and turned off the lamp on the table, and the room quickly went dark. But a long time passed, and neither of them truly fell asleep.
The next morning, Raven Tide Bay returned to its usual state, and Mia and Grace left in separate carriages.
Before leaving the floating hotel, Joseph handed the black crystal wrapped in oilcloth to Grace. After returning to the palace, she went directly to an old appraiser she had known and trusted since childhood.
But not long after Grace had made the arrangements, a court attendant hurried over and said, "Your Highness, His Majesty requests your presence."
The king was in the small chess room in the garden greenhouse, where a chess set was already half-finished.
"You're back? Have a seat."
Grace sat down opposite him, and the king reached out and turned the white pieces toward her, saying, "Play the game with me."
She glanced at the chessboard. White's position wasn't very good; several important positions were blocked by Black, leaving only a narrow path for White to continue.
She picked up a white bishop and moved it one square outward along the diagonal.
"Joseph Grantham," the king placed his black knight on the board, blocking a path next to the white piece, "Since he can teach you, he can teach your brother and sister too. The professors of the Royal Academy should be training more useful people for the Empire."
Grace paused for a moment before speaking softly, "The master has his own judgment in choosing students."
"So he won't agree?"
That's not what I meant.
Grace looked down at the chessboard. She knew her father wasn't asking for her opinion; he just wanted to hear an answer that satisfied him.
"Sir's new magic isn't finished yet," Grace said. "Bringing more people on now might affect the project's original schedule."
The king looked at her for a while, then suddenly laughed and said, "Grace, you rarely speak up for others like this."
He reached out and picked up a black piece, pushing it one space. The white bishop piece that Grace had just left was captured by the black piece, which he casually placed outside the board. "But you must remember, a person who cannot be controlled by you, nor by the Empire, should not possess the power to change this era."
"Do you understand, Grace?"
