The First Military God of the Border

Chapter 40 A Battle Between Masters

The bandits fell one by one, and Lin Hui's arrows became their nightmare.

Chu Hui was so frightened that he didn't dare to move. He lay on the ground trembling. After hearing that there was no sound around him, he chose to retreat and ran away.

However, before Chu Hui could run a few steps, an arrow followed closely behind, piercing his body from behind and pinning him to the ground.

Miserable.

In just half an hour, Lin Hui had hunted down and killed almost all of the dozen or so bandits.

Now, only Chu Yanlai is still struggling to keep going.

With Chu Hui's death, the entire forest fell into a deathly silence.

It was so quiet it was terrifying.

Chu Yanlai leaned against a large tree, his breathing rapid and his hands trembling slightly. He was terrified; Lin Hui was too scary.

He had always considered himself a master archer, but now, his archery skills were utterly worthless compared to Lin Hui's.

Suddenly, a sound came from behind the tree where Chu Yanlai was hiding—the crunching sound of footsteps on the snow.

Lin Hui slowly appeared, and after walking about fifty steps, he stopped and stared intently at Chu Yanlai, who was hiding behind a big tree.

Why did you betray me...?

"Why...the people of Eagle Ridge are all your brothers, your comrades, why did you lead the border troops to surround and kill them?"

Knowing that his fate was uncertain today, Chu Yanlai took a deep breath, stopped hiding, and stepped out from behind the big tree. The faint moonlight cast shadows of branches on his face, and his expression changed constantly.

"I just wanted a different way of life, is that wrong?"

"Oh, did I do something wrong?"

"Lin Hui, as a hunter, why did you join forces with bandits to kill the An family?"

"It's all for our own better lives; we're all the same kind of people."

He spoke with great emotion, then suddenly added with a self-deprecating tone, "I can only blame myself, Chu Yan, for being born at the wrong time."

"Lin Hui, now that things have come to this, I might as well tell you: if my plan had succeeded that day, and the magistrate of Linjiang County had been killed, why would I have turned against my brothers at Cangying Ridge?"

"It's all just fate playing tricks on us, fate playing tricks on us..."

Lin Hui's expression changed.

"So, it turns out your men were responsible for the ambush and killing of the magistrate of Linjiang County that day?"

Chu Yanlai sensed something was wrong from Lin Hui's words. This was top secret; how did Lin Hui know it?

Looking up at Lin Hui, she asked, "Did you save them?"

"As expected, as long as you, Lin Hui, live, I, Chu Yanlai, will never have a peaceful day."

Lin Hui chuckled: "What a pity, you're going to die today. Remember, be a good person in your next life, and don't do such wicked things again."

"You used the entire Eagle Ridge as a bargaining chip to gain Cheng Wuyou's trust. You deserve to die."

Chu Yanlai burst into laughter.

As if possessed, the laughter echoed throughout the mountains.

"Lin Hui, do you think you can kill me?"

"I admit, your archery skills are impressive, but do you think I, Chu Yanlai, am just here to freeload?"

"I lost the last competition, but do you think that was my true ability?"

Chu Yanlai's eyes suddenly turned cold: "Lin Hui, it's still uncertain who will emerge victorious today."

Lin Hui looked at Chu Yanlai, who was almost insane, smiled helplessly, and shook his head. Chu Yanlai was actually a pitiful person.

Bringing up the written test today is simply a way to save our lives.

"are you sure?"

"Don't you dare?"

Lin Hui did not continue to answer, but calmly bent the bow.

Chu Yanlai also calmly drew his bow.

The two men, each with an arrow, stood about fifty paces apart, both aiming for the other's throat.

They aimed at each other intently, neither firing first, their eyes fixed on the other.

At some point, a gust of wind blew by, the moonlight was hidden by the clouds, and in the darkness, their figures gradually became blurred.

In the darkness, the two figures moved simultaneously.

Lin Hui fired the first arrow, while Chu Yanlai kept his bow fully drawn and did not fire. Hearing the whistling sound of the arrow piercing the air, Chu Yanlai rolled on the spot and dodged the arrow.

This was an experience he had figured out on his own. It seemed like he had given his opponent the upper hand, but in reality, the moment his opponent missed his first shot and reloaded his arrow was the moment he would hunt him down.

He was confident that Lin Hui was doomed under his scheme.

As Lin Hui's arrow missed its mark, Chu Yanlai was overjoyed, knowing that his chance had come.

He turned and fired the arrow he had been waiting for at Lin Hui.

But this arrow also missed its mark.

Because the spot where Lin Hui was standing is now completely empty.

This scene filled Chu Yanlai with fear.

Lin Hui was too fast. Just as Chu Yanlai was still wondering, an arrow suddenly appeared on his left side, whistling as it flew towards his left rib.

Chu Yanlai was indeed a master archer with amazing hearing. He judged the direction of the arrow as soon as he heard the sound and quickly dodged.

However, Lin Hui's arrow was shot from an unusually tricky angle. Although Chu Yanlai avoided the vital points, she was still hit in the body.

The arrow was dodged in time and did not pose a fatal threat to Chu Yanlai, but she bled profusely and felt as if she had lost something, leaving her feeling completely powerless.

"Now, what do you have to say?"

"Would you rather die a quick death, or continue testing your archery skills with me?"

Lin Hui's voice came from the woods, seemingly from different locations, sometimes near, sometimes far, making it impossible for Chu Yanlai to pinpoint Lin Hui's location.

Chu Yanlai gritted her teeth, pulled out the arrow, leaned against a large tree, panting heavily, and shouted into the distance:

"Lin Hui, even if I die, I will drag you down with me. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have broken ties with Cangying Ridge, and the brothers of Cangying Ridge wouldn't have died. All of this is because of you."

Silence fell again; there was no sound in the darkness.

Chu Yanlai waited for a long time, but there was still no movement. He carefully came out from behind the big tree, preparing to search for Lin Hui's whereabouts.

But just as he poked half his head out, an arrow came flying at him.

Chu Yanlai dodged in time, and the arrow struck the tree where he was hiding, causing the snow on the tree to fall down and hit Chu Yanlai in the face.

Although it was a close call, Lin Hui's arrow also revealed his position. In the instant Chu Yanlai dodged, she saw half of Lin Hui's foot sticking out from behind a large tree in the distance.

He was certain that this was Lin Hui's location.

Chu Yanlai took a deep breath and reloaded the arrow.

The wounds on his body aggravated the bleeding, causing him to bleed even more and wince in pain.

However, driven by his obsession with killing Lin Hui, he resolutely chose to fire an arrow at the spot he had just discovered.

He shot an arrow that struck the tree, then fired a second and a third, all the while shifting his weight so that Lin Hui couldn't lift his head.

Using this method, Chu Yanlai finally moved to a suitable position, and now he could clearly see Lin Hui hiding behind the big tree.

From his current angle, Lin Hui has nowhere to escape.

But when he reached into his quiver, he found that there was only one arrow left.

This was his last chance, so he decisively nocked an arrow and shot it as fast as he could.

The movements are performed in one smooth motion; although it may seem slow, it is actually done in the time it takes to breathe.

As the arrow pierced straight through Lin Hui's body, Chu Yanlai breathed a sigh of relief the moment he fell to the ground.

He strode forward, intending to humiliate Lin Hui before he was completely dead, but upon arriving at the spot, his expression instantly changed.

"How could that be?"

Where are they?
