We asked you to make an anti-corruption film, but you made one in the name of the people!
Chapter 57, "The Raging Storm," is finished!
Filming for "The Storm" took nearly two months, from early August to early October, a few days faster than Lin Mo had anticipated.
During filming, both Director Wang and Prosecutor Zhao visited the set.
Director Wang arrived in mid-September, wearing a dark jacket and followed by Sun Jianguo. He went directly to the Old Factory Street Market without prior notice.
Lin Mo was filming the scene where Gao Qiqiang and An Xin confronted each other on the street when he saw Director Wang standing behind the crowd, so he quickly stood up.
Director Wang waved his hand, signaling him to continue filming. After that take was finished, Director Wang came over and, without saying any pleasantries, simply said, "Well done. I've seen a few clips; they're impressive."
Then he turned to Zhang Yi and Zhang Songwen, shook hands with them, said "thank you for your hard work," and left without giving a long speech or taking a photo. He stood there for less than twenty minutes.
Inspector Zhao arrived at the end of September, and stayed a little longer than Director Wang.
He watched the scene where Gao Qiqiang was at the construction site. Zhang Songwen, dressed in tattered overalls and covered in dust, was working diligently among a group of workers. After watching it, Inspector Zhao asked, "What's this actor's name?"
Lin Mo said, "Zhang Songwen."
Zhao Jian nodded, said nothing more, and patted Lin Mo on the shoulder before leaving: "Come back early after you're done, the Supreme People's Procuratorate has something waiting for you."
After the two leaders visited, the entire crew felt that this production had gained a different level of importance.
One early morning in early October, at a detention center in the suburbs of Jiangmen.
In the final scene, An Xin and Gao Qiqiang meet for the last time.
Gao Qiqiang has been sentenced to death and is waiting for execution in the detention center. An Xin came to see him, not as a police officer, but as someone who had been pursuing him for sixteen years.
This scene doesn't need any dialogue. The script says—two people look at each other without saying a word.
An Xin stood up, turned around, and left.
Gao Qiqiang watched his retreating figure, his lips moved slightly, but he said nothing.
Lin Mo didn't give the actors much instruction on the scene. He only said one sentence: "Sixteen years. Everything that needed to be said has been said. There's no need to say anything that shouldn't be said."
Zhang Yi and Zhang Songwen nodded at the same time.
The stage manager claps the clapperboard.
The room wasn't big, with an iron table and two chairs. Zhang Songwen sat opposite him, wearing a dark blue prison uniform. His hair was shaved short, and he looked much thinner. It wasn't makeup; he hadn't eaten properly for several days in preparation for these last few scenes.
Zhang Yi sat opposite him, wearing a police uniform, with gray hair.
Those gray hairs were actually dyed; the makeup artist spent several hours dyeing them strand by strand.
Zhang Yi said there was no need to dye it so finely, since the camera wouldn't be able to see it from a distance anyway, but the makeup artist insisted on dyeing it, saying that Director Lin's camera would capture it.
The two looked at each other, but neither spoke.
Zhang Songwen's eyes twitched slightly, not blinking, but the kind of movement that seemed to indicate he wanted to say something but swallowed it back. His lips moved slightly, but he didn't say anything. His hand rested on the table, his fingers slightly curled, not clenched into a fist, just left there, as if he no longer had the strength to clench it.
Zhang Yi looked into his eyes without moving, just staring. There was no hatred, no anger, and no relief in his eyes; there was nothing, yet there was everything.
The silence lasted for a long time.
No one spoke behind the monitor; even their breathing was kept to a minimum.
Zhang Yi stood up, and the chair made a soft thud on the cement floor, a sound that seemed particularly jarring in the quiet space.
He turned and left.
He took three steps, paused, didn't turn around, and continued walking.
Zhang Songwen watched his retreating figure, and his lips moved slightly.
There was no sound, but the mouth movements formed a single word – “Peace”.
He didn't finish speaking because An Xin had already walked out the door.
"Click."
Lin Mo stared at the monitor, not speaking immediately.
The set was quiet; everyone was waiting for him.
Old Zhao stood to the side, his hand gripping the walkie-talkie so tightly it was almost dripping wet.
"That's a wrap," Lin Mo said. "'The Storm' is finished."
The set was silent for a second, then applause and cheers erupted simultaneously.
Zhang Yi walked back from outside the door, and Zhang Songwen stood up from his chair. The two looked at each other, and Zhang Songwen smiled first. Zhang Yi smiled too and patted him on the shoulder.
Zhang Yi said with a smile, "Sixteen years, and finally I've sent you in."
Zhang Songwen replied with a smile, "Thank you for your hard work."
The people around laughed, but after the laughter subsided, they felt a pang of sadness.
Old Zhao organized a group photo. Everyone stood together, with Lin Mo in the middle, Zhang Yi and Zhang Songwen next to him, the other actors in the back row, and Old Zhao squatting in the front.
"Three, two, one"
The flash went off once.
In the photo, everyone is smiling. After the group photo was taken, the staff began to clean up the scene.
The actors said goodbye to each other. Zhang Songwen walked up to Lin Mo, extended his hand, and Lin Mo shook it.
Zhang Songwen said, "Director Lin, thank you."
Lin Mo said, "It's because you acted well."
Zhang Songwen shook his head, said nothing more, and turned to leave.
Zhang Yi walked over and, without saying much, simply asked, "Director Lin, how long will post-production take?"
Lin Mo thought for a moment: "If things go quickly, it will take about ten days."
