Ten minutes later, the mother was still standing by the flatbed cart.

The urologist, on the second line of duty, put his phone back in his pocket, turned to his mother, and said, "The ultrasound and physical examination strongly suggest torsion; we need to explore it as soon as possible. How the surgery will be performed, and whether it can be saved, will depend on how the blood flow recovers after we're on the operating table. Sign the papers now, don't delay."

The mother stood there as Lin Ye handed her the signed form, pointing to two sections that needed confirmation: "This is the informed consent form for the emergency exploration, and this is the anesthesia-related information form. The urologist is here; feel free to ask if you have any questions."

"He was perfectly fine just now, why does he suddenly need surgery?"

"Sometimes twisting can cause sudden pain."

The second-line urologist took over.

"The earlier you arrive, the more opportunities you have. The most important thing now is to get to the operating room."

The mother bowed her head and signed the document, her hand trembling as she did so.

Nurse Zhao held her elbow and moved her aside towards the stretcher: "Please follow me, and stop at the elevator. Don't let the child hear those scary things on the way."

Ma Hao had already checked the test application, ultrasound report, and wristband, and then put them into the transport bag.

He handed the bag to the second-line urologist: "The blood and urine samples have been sent; we're not waiting for the results. Fasting will begin at 11:16 AM. All family members need to sign the consent form."

"Okay." The urology coordinator took the bag. "Follow me to the elevator."

As the stretcher passed through the emergency area, the boy's hand reached out from under the sheet and touched his mother's fingers.

Lin Ye followed on the side until the elevator doors closed, then turned back to the triage desk.

Nurse Zhao had already opened the curtain of the examination room, changed the sheets, and pushed the treatment cart back to its original position.

She stuffed the used signature board into the drawer: "The first wave was busy enough, so we'll have to keep a close eye on things from now on."

"Okay, Sister Zhao." Ma Hao wiped his forehead. "My back was covered in sweat just now."

"Then you should finish completing the medical records first, don't leave a mess behind."

Ma Hao waved his hand and returned to the workstation to complete the medical records.

Lin Ye opened the triage book and just wrote down the destination for the operating room.

A flurry of footsteps came from outside the door, and two young men rushed into the emergency room, surrounding a boy.

The one in the middle is holding his chin with both hands, his mouth is wide open, his face is flushed red, and there is a round, transparent light bulb stuck in his mouth.

The end of the light bulb was still sticking out of his lips, and there was a layer of saliva on the glass.

The short-haired girl standing next to him held up her phone. When she saw Nurse Zhao, she spoke first: "Sister, we're not here to cause trouble. He really can't produce it."

Nurse Zhao turned her phone upside down: "Put your phone down first. No one here is watching you filming."

The boy let out a muffled whimper, his nostrils flaring.

Lin Ye walked up to him and first looked at the rise and fall of his chest.

"Can you breathe?"

The boy blinked twice and inhaled rapidly through his nose.

"Your nose is clear, don't speak yet." Lin Ye turned to Nurse Zhao, "Sister Zhao, prepare the monitoring and suction equipment for the second resuscitation bed, and don't touch anything around the light bulb."

Nurse Zhao immediately sprang into action, pushing the equipment while asking the other two, "Who brought him here? Where did they get the light bulb from?"

A boy wearing glasses raised his hand: "Me. It's from my old table lamp, it's never been lit."

"Is the glass cracked?"

"No, we just checked."

"Has anyone tried pulling it out?"

The short-haired girl stuffed her phone into her bag and whispered, "I tugged at him, and he cried out in pain, so we didn't dare move."

"Don't touch it from behind. If the glass is in his mouth, it will cut his oral cavity and airway. Ma Hao, find out when he put it in his mouth, how much alcohol he drank, and who tried to pull it out. Contact the oral and maxillofacial surgery department and tell him that the glass is stuck in the light bulb, the light bulb is intact, and the patient can breathe through his nose."

Ma Hao had already opened the triage form: "How old are you?"

The bespectacled man quickly replied, "Twenty-two, my name is He Ze. I drank two bottles of beer with dinner tonight, but I'm not drunk, really not drunk."

Nurse Zhao chimed in from the side, "Are the two bottles the two bottles on your table in total, or are they just two bottles for him?"

The bespectacled man opened his mouth, and the short-haired girl added for him, "He drank two bottles himself."

Ma Hao noted down the amount of alcohol in the medical record and then asked, "When did you put it in your mouth?"

The short-haired girl glanced at her phone: "About ten minutes ago, we watched a video that said you could put a light bulb in your mouth and take it out, but he didn't believe it."

Nurse Zhao connected the suction device.

"Do you believe it now?"

He Ze's eyes reddened instantly, and he exhaled a heavy breath through his nose.

Lin Ye clipped the monitor onto He Ze's finger, and the blood oxygen and heart rate slowly appeared on the screen.

Blood oxygen 99%, heart rate 106.

He looked along the edge of the light bulb at the lips and corners of the mouth; the glass was intact, and he saw no fresh bleeding.

"Can I swallow now?"

He Ze's Adam's apple bobbed, and saliva dripped down the glass from the corner of his mouth.

He frowned and shook his head.

"Put the suction cup aside, and clean up any drool he produces." Lin Ye turned to He Ze's friends, "Don't pull him out any further, and don't put your hand in to touch the light bulb. We'll deal with it when the specialist arrives."

The bespectacled man took a step forward: "Doctor, could you break the light bulb a little? If it's broken, we can get it out."

Lin Ye raised his hand to stop him: "No. If the shards get into your mouth, they could cut your tongue and throat, which is much riskier than what you're doing now."

"Will it get stuck?"

"He can breathe through his nose now, and his blood oxygen levels are stable. We're monitoring him closely, and specialists are on their way. All you can do now is leave him alone."

Ma Hao hung up the phone: "The second-line surgeon from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery came down from the inpatient building to ask about the light bulb model and base."

The bespectacled man took out his phone from his pocket and showed the photos of the table lamp he had just dismantled.

The phone screen shows an old-fashioned incandescent light bulb, with clear glass and a metal base that has been unscrewed.

Lin Ye glanced at the photo on his phone screen.

"Send the photos to the second-tier staff," Lin Ye said.

Nurse Zhao took a photo with her work phone and sent it to the second line of the oral and maxillofacial surgery department. She then led He Ze to sit down on the second intensive care bed.

She placed a gauze pad under his chin and lowered her voice, "Raise your hand if it hurts, raise your hand if you can't breathe. Don't nod or shake your head, glass doesn't like to follow you."

He Ze raised his right hand and moved his fingers to indicate that he had heard.

Someone was peeking inside from the doorway.

Nurse Zhao called out through the curtain, "Hey you outside, don't block the entrance. If you want to watch the show, go watch TV in the waiting area."

The figure immediately retreated.

When the second-line oral and maxillofacial surgeons entered the emergency area, they first checked the monitoring screen, and then bent down to examine He Ze's mouth corners and the edges of the light bulb.

"The light bulb is intact, and the airway is fine for now." He looked up and asked Lin Ye, "How much did you drink?"

"Two bottles of beer, swallowed at 11:47. My friend tried to pull it in once but stopped. Now it's breathing through its nose, its blood oxygen level is 99%, it can't swallow normally, and there's no obvious bleeding from the corner of its mouth."

The second-in-command nodded: "Send him to the treatment room, the anesthesiologist will come and assess him. Treat him as a intact glass foreign object first, don't try to remove it here."

The bespectacled man's shoulders slumped: "Doctor, does he need to be hospitalized?"

"First, safely remove the light bulb."

The second-line doctor picked up the medical record folder.

"We'll talk about the rest after we've dealt with everything."

Nurse Zhao leaned down and asked He Ze, "We might need an anesthesia assessment later. Should we contact your family?"

He Ze closed his eyes and nodded.

"Whose call was that?"

He Ze raised his hand and pointed at the man with glasses.

The man with glasses quickly gave out the number.

Nurse Zhao handed over the phone number field and asked He Ze, "Would you like to keep the video we just filmed?"

He Ze stared at the short-haired girl, frowning and shaking his head.

Nurse Zhao relayed the message to her: "Delete the video, don't post it. Don't talk about the patient's situation outside the home."

The short-haired girl opened the photo album and deleted the video in front of Nurse Zhao.

Before He Ze was pushed to the treatment room, the bespectacled man leaned against the gurney, as if he wanted to say something.

He Ze looked at him, the light bulb still stuck in his mouth, only able to let out a muffled sound from his throat.

The bespectacled man shut his mouth and took half a step back.

The flatbed cart was pushed toward the treatment room at the end of the corridor.

Nurse Zhao straightened the sheet on the second resuscitation bed and put the monitoring cable back on the equipment rack.

Ma Hao added He Ze's name, the contact number left by his friend, and the whereabouts of the case to the record, and closed the medical record folder only after confirming that everything was correct.

Lin Ye added a line to the triage form: "Transfer to the treatment room at the end of the corridor for consultation with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Anesthesia assessment pending."

"I'll repeat the instructions to my friends again: don't let them block the entrance to the treatment room."

"Go."

Just as Ma Hao stepped outside the curtain, the phone at the workstation rang.

Nurse Zhao reached out and took the phone. After listening for a couple of sentences, her expression turned somber.

"A call from 120 (emergency services). On the highway, two cars collided, and the extent of the injuries hasn't been fully reported yet."
