The following evening, Lin Ye returned to the emergency department of the First Municipal Hospital.

The white coat had been hanging in the closet for several days, and when I took it out, it still smelled a bit like disinfectant.

Seven days of pre-hospital care, in the ambulance, at the scene, in the emergency center, the feeling is different from being in the department.

At the emergency center, he was a trainee, following Dr. Han's instructions and practicing his skills.

In the emergency department, he was a resident physician, signing his own papers and managing his own patients.

Both felt good, but Lin Ye still preferred the emergency room.

Nurse Zhao was looking down at the IV drip form when she caught sight of him out of the corner of her eye and chuckled.

"You're back to work today?"

"Yes, Sister Zhao, I'm in the same class as Ma Hao today."

Nurse Zhao gestured towards the observation area with her lips.

"He arrived early and has already taken a walk around the observation area."

Lin Ye looked in that direction and saw Ma Hao coming from the other end of the corridor, carrying a handover book in his hand.

"Linye!"

Ma Hao called out from afar, walked closer, and flipped through the handover book.

"He came back to work the night shift as soon as the practical training ended; he recovered pretty quickly."

"Aren't you the same?"

"Okay, let's not laugh at each other."

Ma Hao turned to the night shift page in the handover log.

"You'll be seeing patients tonight, I'll be in charge of the observation area."

"no problem."

Qin Hai came out of the office, holding documents in his hand, and saw him.

"You're back?"

"Teacher Qin, the practical training is over."

"Yeah, I know." Qin Hai glanced at him. "It's good that you're back. Be more attentive to your work on the night shift, and don't try to handle anything you're unsure about."

"understood."

"How have you been doing these past few days traveling with them?"

"I learned a lot. Pre-hospital care is different from the ward; there are some things I can't remember while in the car."

"That's fine if you can't remember. You'll have plenty of opportunities to practice once you get to the department. Okay, get back to what you're doing."

Qin Hai didn't say anything more and went to the other end of the corridor.

When the doctor on the day shift saw Lin Ye arrive, he pushed the handover book over to him.

"Dr. Lin, that's all for now. There are three observation areas. Please take a closer look at the patients who come in earlier."

Lin Ye lowered his head, his gaze lingering on the list of people under observation.

Liu Yang's name is still on it.

"Did he have a follow-up check-up this afternoon?"

"The follow-up examination showed that the blood oxygen level is normal and the rales have decreased. You can be discharged tomorrow."

Lin Ye responded and returned to the clinic after handing over his work.

The night shift has just begun.

In the early hours of the night, a young man came to the triage desk with patches of red rashes on his face and neck, scratching itchyly. He was helped in by a friend.

Lin Ye asked him to sit down and glanced at the rash.

"What did you eat? How long ago? Have you had any allergies before?"

"I ate some shrimp, about an hour ago," the young man said, scratching his neck. "I've never had this before... Doctor, could this be an allergic reaction?"

"Don't scratch it yet."

Lin Ye glanced at his lips; they were a little swollen.

Do you feel a tightness in your throat, have difficulty speaking, or struggle to breathe?

"My throat is okay, but it's itchy, my whole body is itchy."

Lin Ye measured his blood pressure, which was normal. He then listened to his lungs, and his breathing sounds were clear with no wheezing.

He mentally reviewed the symptoms: hives and mild lip swelling one hour after eating, without laryngeal edema or a drop in blood pressure, indicating a mild to moderate allergic reaction.

"It's an allergy, and it seems to be mild so far. You have a rash, your lips are a little swollen, but your throat is fine. Take some allergy medication first, and observe for a while. If you have difficulty breathing or feel dizzy, let me know immediately."

He prescribed antihistamines for the young man and instructed the nurses to closely monitor his breathing and blood pressure.

After taking the medicine, the young man felt less itchy, and the rash gradually subsided.

A friend standing nearby asked, "Will he be able to eat shrimp again after this?"

"I suggest you stop eating them. In the future, ask before you eat if there are shrimp or crabs. It's also good to carry some allergy medication with you."

The young man looked distressed.

"I really love seafood..."

"Even if you love seafood, it's best to avoid it altogether."

After observing for more than an hour, the rash subsided, the swelling in the lips stopped, and the blood pressure remained stable.

Lin Ye told him to go back, adding: "If you feel tightness in your throat, shortness of breath, or dizziness after you get home, call 120 immediately or come to the emergency room."

The young man responded and left with his friend.

Not long after he left, another middle-aged man entered the clinic. He was limping and leaning against the wall, his ankle swollen high.

"Doctor, I just twisted my ankle. Can you take a look? I don't need an X-ray, right?"

Lin Ye pressed his ankle and checked the blood circulation and sensation in his toes. The movement was normal, and there was no numbness.

"It's so swollen, you should take a picture to be on the safe side."

The middle-aged man gave a bitter smile.

"I have to be at work tomorrow morning, so it's difficult to ask for leave."

"If you break a bone and try to go tomorrow, it will only make things worse later."

The middle-aged man thought about it for a moment, then went to take the picture anyway.

While waiting for the results, he made a phone call in the hallway to ask for leave, his voice sounding tired.

The X-ray showed no fracture.

Lin Ye treated it as an ankle sprain, prescribed ice and pain relief, and instructed me to elevate the affected limb, avoid weight-bearing for the first two days, and use an ankle brace or elastic bandage for compression if possible. He also advised me to come back for a follow-up examination if the swelling worsened or the pain intensified.

The middle-aged man sighed.

"Okay, then I'll have to ask for leave."

"Taking a couple of days off is better than forcing yourself to keep going."

The middle-aged man walked away with a limp.

Ma Hao came over to get the record board halfway through and casually asked a question.

"How's it going on your end?"

"I'm relatively free now."

"It's good to have some free time; it's rare to have peace and quiet on the night shift."

The first half of the night passed just like that.

After finishing the last medical record, Lin Ye leaned back in his chair and rested for a while.

That's how it is at night in the emergency room. When things get busy, you're running around like crazy, but when things quiet down, you can hear the sound of the medicine cart wheels at the end of the corridor.

After 11 o'clock, Lin Ye took the opportunity to go to the observation area.

Liu Yang leaned against the bed, resting with his eyes closed. Hearing footsteps, he opened his eyes, saw Lin Ye, and smiled.

"Dr. Lin, you're here."

"The follow-up test results are in." Lin Ye stood by the bed. "Your blood oxygen is normal, and the rales have decreased. You can be discharged tomorrow."

"Thank you, I appreciate your help these past two days."

"Of course." Lin Ye paused for a moment. "Have you thought about what the child's father mentioned?"

Liu Yang remained silent for a while.

He said he'd already paid for all the medical expenses, and I couldn't stop him. As for work, I haven't decided yet.

"If he's willing to pay, then let him pay. You saved his daughter."

"I saved her not for that reason," Liu Yang said, then smiled again. "If I hadn't jumped that day, that child would be lying here now."

Where is your sister?

"Back to school."

"She still has to study in the evening. She came to see me after school, and when I told her to leave, she looked back at the door for a long time before leaving. This child has always been like this since she was little; she doesn't say it, but she cares about it."

"Does she live at school?"

"My parents are gone, so I feel more at ease with her living at school. I'll think about other things after I'm discharged from the hospital and find a job."

Lin Ye nodded.

He stood by the bed for a while, thinking that when the young man jumped into the river, he probably never thought that he had a younger sister waiting for him to come back.

He didn't think about anything at the moment he saved the person.

He turned around and went back to the consultation room, leaned back in his chair and scrolled through his phone for a while.

I scrolled to a short drama with the title "All the Hospital Directors Can't Sleep," so I clicked on it and started watching. The plot was full of twists and turns, and it was incredibly thrilling. Even when the nurses were giving injections to patients, it was like they were in a martial arts movie.

It was almost midnight.

A young man in his early twenties came in through the door, sat down on the waiting chair, one hand covering his chest and the other supporting his knee.

Nurse Zhao saw it at the triage desk and immediately ran over.

"What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"

"My heart is beating fast, and I can't breathe."

The young man pressed his chest.

"I've been playing games all this time, and suddenly this happened. Do you think I'm going to die from overwork?"

"Sit down first, don't panic."

Nurse Zhao offered a word of comfort and then turned to call out towards the examination room.

"Lin Ye, someone come here."

In the consultation room, Lin Ye was scrolling through his phone.

Hearing the shout, he put his phone face down on the table and got up to come out.

"What's wrong?"

"He said that while playing games, his heart started racing and he couldn't breathe properly. He was afraid he would suddenly die, so he came alone."

When the young man saw him, he stood up abruptly, then sat back down.

"Doctor, am I going to die suddenly? I feel like my heart is going to jump out of my chest."
