Warden of the Beast World: Everyone is a Hakimi
Chapter 5 Not Full
Youlie looked down at the raw rabbit beside its paw, then looked up at the meat skewers that Yetang was grilling in her hand. Then it raised one of its front paws and gently nudged the unprocessed rabbit on the ground with the back of its paw.
The movements were very light, with a cautious, tentative feel, as if to say—this too, should be like the one before.
Ye Tang followed his movements and looked over, her gaze falling on his large, furry, silver-gray paw, then moving to his gray-blue eyes, and instantly understood.
"Want to eat this?" She pointed to the raw rabbit.
Youlie nodded.
The wolf's head bobbed up and down, its ears twitching in response.
Of course he could speak; in fact, he could give tactical reports in three of the Empire's official languages. But this little female in front of him seemed to genuinely treat him like a dog.
Besides, she said "so cute" when she petted him just now, and it felt really nice to him. Since she likes dogs, he can just keep pretending to be a dog.
A major general pretending to be a dog for a piece of roasted meat—if word got out, his men would laugh until they retired. But anyway, there wasn't a third person in this deep mountain forest who saw it.
Ye Tang chuckled when she saw him nod, picked up the spice bottle and shook it at him: "Okay, wait, I'll grill it for you."
She put the remaining skewers of raw meat back on the fire, this time with even greater care than before.
The rabbit meat skewered on branches slowly rotated over the flames as she flipped the skewers with one hand and sprinkled seasonings on them one by one with the other.
First, add salt to let the saltiness penetrate into the meat as a base; then sprinkle with pepper and cumin, and the spicy aroma will burst out on the surface of the meat when the high temperature is activated.
Finally, sprinkle some chili powder on top. The bright red powder lands on the sizzling, oily meat, instantly coated with the fat and turning into a glistening red layer.
She flipped the food slowly but rhythmically, ensuring each side was lightly browned before flipping, guaranteeing even cooking without burning or drying out.
Ghost Hunter crouched beside her, his grey-blue eyes fixed on the meat skewers on the fire.
His sense of smell was far more acute than in his human form. The aroma of the spices, heated by the fire, transformed into an extremely aggressive fragrance, relentlessly assaulting his nostrils. When was the last time he had smelled something so fragrant?
He couldn't remember. The Legion's mess hall rations consisted of various nutritional supplements and dark bread. The marching rations in the North were so dry and hard that they required sheer willpower to swallow them. The very existence of this skewer of meat was a complete and utter blow to his dietary habits of the past twenty-seven years.
Ye Tang took the grilled meat skewers off the fire, blew on them twice, and handed them to him: "Here, be careful, they're hot."
Ghost Hunter lowered his head and snatched it. With one bite, the crispy outer layer and the tender inside burst open between his teeth, the complex flavor of meat juice mixed with spices filling his mouth. He finished the whole skewer in two bites, leaving not a single bone, chewing with a loud crunch.
Then he looked up and continued to look at her.
Those grey-blue eyes clearly conveyed three words—"Not full."
Ye Tang spread her hands and pointed to the pile of clean bones on the ground: "No, this rabbit is one I just found. I ate half of it myself, and the other half is already in your stomach."
After she finished speaking, she suddenly realized something, looked down at the spice bottle in her hand, then at the pile of bones on the ground, and did some quick mental calculations.
Wait a minute, that dog stole half of the roasted rabbit meat, and these skewers are made from her leftovers. It's like she's been busy all day feeding the dog. Oh well, she's full anyway, and besides, that dog… it's so handsome.
Upon hearing this, the hunter lowered the tip of its tail.
He turned around, his silver-gray figure silently disappearing into the forest.
As Ye Tang was tidying up the spice bottles on the ground, she caught a glimpse of a large, silvery-gray shadow standing up and walking into the woods.
She paused for a moment, then instinctively stood up and took two steps forward, exclaiming, "Hey? The dog?"
The forest was quiet and still, with no response. Only the rustling of leaves in the wind and the faint chirping of insects in the distance could be heard.
Ye Tang stood by the fire, still clutching the twig that had skewered the roasting meat in her hand, a sudden emptiness washing over her. She sighed, looked down blankly, and gave a self-deprecating laugh—well, she was a wild animal, after all, she'd just grab whatever food she could and leave.
She stomped out the fire, then bent down to pick up the baseball bat and suitcase.
Just then, the bushes behind them suddenly shook.
Ye Tang turned around.
The large, silver-gray dog emerged from the woods, carrying three plump gray rabbits in its mouth. It held them carefully by the scruff of their necks, leaving not a single tooth mark on their fur.
He walked through the soft fallen leaves in the woods to Ye Tang, placed the three rabbits neatly at her feet, and then looked up at her.
Its grey-blue eyes were calm and serious, and its tail unconsciously swayed slightly behind it.
Ye Tang looked down at the rabbit on the ground, then looked up at him.
"Wow! You're amazing!" Her eyes lit up instantly. She knelt down, cupped his wolfish face in her hands, and gave it a good rub. Her voice was filled with undisguised surprise and joy. "You scared me just now! I thought you left and weren't coming back!"
Youlie's wolf-like face was distorted from her kneading, his silver-gray cheeks peeking out from between her fingers, making him look both helpless and amusing against his calm, grey-blue eyes. Was he leaving and never coming back?
He had only just decided to follow her, and three rabbits had already sent him away? But he didn't dislike the little female's happy reaction...
Youlie quietly squatted in place, letting her rub him to her heart's content.
Ye Tang rubbed the rabbits for a full minute before reluctantly withdrawing his hand and looking down to re-examine them. The rabbits were plump, with smooth fur, each weighing about three or four pounds, enough for him and the big dog to have another meal.
However, she noticed a detail: there weren't a single tooth mark on the back of the three rabbits' necks, and their fur was completely intact. She glanced at Ghost Hunter, thinking that this dog's control was too strong; it brought back three live rabbits without even breaking a single skin.
"Alright," Ye Tang rolled up her sleeves, squatted down again, and took out a knife and seasonings from her spatial storage. "You hunted the rabbit, you provided the ingredients, I'll cook it for you. What reason do I have to refuse a furry friend's request?"
She quickly and efficiently prepared the rabbit. This time, her technique was noticeably more skillful than before; she skinned it, removed the internal organs, washed it, and cut it into pieces all in one smooth motion.
The well water washed the rabbit meat clean, and the knife cleanly sliced it along the bones, leaving uniform chunks that were then arranged on a clean stone slab. She rebuilt the pile of firewood she had just extinguished, lit the lighter with a click, and the orange flames licked the dry branches, crackling and popping.
Ghost Hunter lay beside her, watching her work. The firelight shone on her face, and fine beads of sweat appeared on her forehead. She casually wiped them away with the back of her hand and continued turning the skewers and adding seasonings.
The aroma of cumin and chili powder exploded again, even stronger than before. This time, it was three rabbits, a generous portion, and the spices were sprinkled on generously.
While grilling, she muttered to herself, "I'll have to check my space next time to see if there's a barbecue grill." "I'm almost out of chili powder, I wonder if there's any left in my space." "It would taste even better if I could brush some honey on it." After muttering for a while, she started humming a song. The tune was from somewhere else, light and casual, completely different from the style of Northern Army songs.
The hunter rested its chin on its front paws and quietly watched her.
He suddenly realized that this was much better than eating marching rations in the North.
